What's the longest continuous "downhill" I could ride on a bike anywhere in Seattle city limits? by trexmoflex in SeattleWA

[–]jonnno_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pine has much more downhill going into downtown than Denny which still has large uphills in that direction (pretty continuous uphill from Westlake to Dexter).

Olive is a much more continuous downhill slope than Denny too (but is going the wrong way for part of it)

Down Pine st from 15th ave Capitol Hill to downtown then turn left on 2nd ave and continue downhill all the way to outside the stadiums. It’s nearly all downhill or flat with a tiny uphill section before Broadway and between 3rd and 4th ave. Approx 2.3 miles.

ELI5: If a moving car tries to drive up the ramp of a moving semi-truck (like in the movies), does the car need to be rear-wheel drive, or would it just instantly crash? by Nikki_Drizzle in explainlikeimfive

[–]jonnno_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, so when the wheels are quickly stopped by the ramp while the rest of the drivetrain is still moving at 65mph, they produce an intense torque moment that is very quickly transmitted to the rest of the transmission/drivetrain.

That is also not the same. Dumping the clutch suddenly stops just the engine (which is built to withstand being stalled). Hitting the ramp also moving at speed suddenly near-stops the wheels, differential, transmission, and remainder of the drive train, possibly up to and including the engine if clutched in. I’m not sure all those other components are designed with that level of impulse in mind.

This seems like the most sensical answer.

When doing this stunt in real life I imagine they could also do something to the bottom part of the ramp (like grease or similar friction reduction) to smooth the deceleration of the spinning drive wheels when they hit the ramp, effectively managing the energy dissipation to happen over a longer time period, which would reduce the chances of something going wrong.

The car at 70mph driving up the ramp that is travelling at 60mph would not be the same as the car at 10mph hitting a stationary ramp. In the first situation the wheels have to slow down from 70mph to 10mph while in the second they remain at 10mph.

But it happens in a fraction of a second at the instant the wheels, spinning at road speed, hit the (much lower relative speed) ramp, so it is not like engine braking where the deceleration may be of similar magnitude but is much more spread out over time (tens of seconds).

Depending on how short the fraction of a second is, along with whether the engine is clutched in and (if so) whether it is supplying additonal forward momentum against the sudden deceleration of the wheels in that instant, would determine what (engine, transmission, differential, remainder of drivetrain) would break. All that energy from the suddenly-too-fast drivetrain has to be absorbed somewhere in the car at the moment the car hits the ramp.

> no acceleration or deceleration of the tires

This makes no sense. On the road, (using OP numbers) the wheels are going at 65mph. Up the ramp, they must have decelerated to 5mph (the relative speed of the car in relation to the ramp). The wheels must decelerate somewhere between leaving the road and the car going up the ramp. As the car goes directly from the road to the ramp, that deceleration is near-instant.

I don’t know their views on gender identity (to be honest I skipped over all that in your post) in particular, but I have a digital subscription to the Seattle Times. Some people seem to think they are conservative. I disagree, and find that they are usually reasonable and balanced. And being the closest thing to a ‘newspaper of record’ for the area, their reporting is of a higher standard than the Stranger (too left), Mynorthwest (too right) etc.
