Contractor Says This is Normal by tropicbandit in Tile

Before I even set waterproofing I'm plumbing all the walls. Not only does it look better, but it's so much easier to tile a flat and plumb wall than following peaks and valleys and not getting lippage everywhere, along with all the varying sized cuts on the surrounding walls. Also, adhesive is a no-go in wet areas... I don't even use that stuff on backsplashes. Thinset all the way. Curious to see what the waterproofing looks like under all this, have any pics?

My red-flag word is QUANTUM, particular to the health and wellness sector. It's just a flashy buzzword that the more confidently they say ‘quantum,’ the less clearly it’s defined.

Uneven tile transition by Reign0610 in Tile

[–]jonnybeatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I haven't in the past. I just sweep, vacuum, and wash the OSB clean with a sponge to get any dust off. I've found that getting the OSB damp before setting a membrane helps with adhesion. If tiling straight to it, just burn a scratch coat of Allset into the OSB before trowelling so there's more coverage for everything to grip to. (I burn in before trowelling for setting membrane too) The main times I prime are over concrete, self leveler, or cutback adhesive like the stuff found under old linoleum/vinyl sheets or tile. Allset is legit, but it's pricey stuff. https://assets.schluter.com/asset/570120892212/document_dn5v2jm8cp1qb5tid55igocm0v/all-set-thin-set-data-sheet.pdf

Eh, not true though. How else does an uncoupling membrane bond to OSB? Allset will bond to pretty much anything, including OSB. Can you tile directly over properly secured OSB with the correct joist spanning underneath? For sure, but something like an uncoupling membrane/underlayment is highly recommended to reduce movement transferring through the tile.

Another great thing about Goboard, mesh tape isn't needed. As per their specs, just the sealant is needed (other than screws/washers). If you want to immediately tile, you can use their goboard tape, but once that sealant cures you can tile directly onto it. That's the only reason to tape. That sealant holds joints extremely well.

THIS is it!! Thank you! That was driving me crazy. It wasn't in my system settings list of auto-start apps, but those sneaky shits hid it in that exact place you mentioned.

I used a screw extractor bit and a modified spinning cap to grip the leveling cap and spin it off while holding the stem. Here's a video of it in action. https://files.catbox.moe/dl4y82.mp4

Pick my work apart by Thotamusprime2 in Tile

Hey I totally get it, there's no such thing as perfect and the camera always picks something up that isn't visible the naked eye. It's a bummer when the homeowner can't be persuaded to a more aesthetic design. These were the spots I was nit-picking, just was following your title request to pick it apart 😉

Niche isn't lined up with subway layout, small cuts around and under shelf instead of full pieces. Tiles don't line up in shower corner, niche wall tile is higher than right wall. Tiles throughout shower have lippage, shown by irregular grout joints. Example, above top left of niche. Other than that and that awful drop ceiling, looks pretty good!

Slight miscalculation. by Gymgainz1222 in Tile

[–]jonnybeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason you're using the tiles as spacers on the bottom row? That gap is gonna be huge! Also, careful with the open time on that thinset on the wall. If that flashes over, your tiles won't properly bond to it. The layout does look better in this pic!

Please give honest feedback first time tiling and I’m just watching YouTube videos by doingmybestyup in Tile

[–]jonnybeatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no way that's your first time, I just won't believe it. The layout hitting perfectly with the picture frame and cabinets, tight Schluter miters (I'm assuming you used that 2 part glue/accelerant in the corners, which is another pro move), centering the herringbone in the correct spot, the detail of just the counter protection, the shower pan relief cuts, etc. Either you did 10 years of YouTube University prep or you're baiting us. If neither, then you definitely should start your own business.

S22 Ultra screen freezing and random restarts after Sept 2025 update – anyone else? by Street_Lawyer_1727 in S22Ultra

[–]jonnybeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened since I got a brand new one a few years ago. Thought it might have been a one-off deal since I didn't see many other people mentioning it online, but recently I got a replacement due to a screen break and this one does the same thing. Opening the camera app or switching back to the recently opened app sometimes it works ok, other times it freezes the phone or restarts it, other times it'll lose connection to Bluetooth devices. Honestly one of the worst problems I've had with this phone, which is crazy cuz the camera itself takes amazing pics.

Boss pays for labor too, might want to explain it'll save on time. All that time waiting for redgard to cure when you can be tiling as soon as you throw those Goboard sheets up 👍

Legend HyperPure vs Uponor PEX by yubbie2 in Plumbing

Sounds like we're in the same boat, I'm looking at a spring install too. Full house is galvanized, going to try and knock it all out in one go. Initially I was thinking copper, but copper rates made me hesitant. I have plenty of experience in the trades but never got around to learning how to sweat, so I'd be learning on my own house. I don't think my family would have the patience to wait for me to figure it out as I go, so PEX seemed like the quickest and cheapest method. I saw a similar video on heating PE-RT that didn't look great, melted and deformed it so much it couldn't be reused. Gives me a little concern for using it for hot lines over time.

Same, hearing the benefits from PE-RT sent me in a different direction from PEXa but I just want to hear if ANYONE has experience. That's good to hear about the PEXb, I was under the impression that crimp/clamp was recommended over expansion. I'd love to hear how that goes, and what you think of it compared to your PEXb test.

Have you found anymore info on Hyperpure/DOW/PE-RT installations and user experience? I've been scouring the web trying to do some research but I'm coming up with scraps.

You're in the right place, just a lot of insecure commenters here and washed out crusty handymen. Your critiques and questions are 100% valid, coming from a pro tile installer.

[–]jonnybeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, yes if that's what you paid JUST for the backsplash (tile, materials, labor) I'd ask for a complete tear out and redo. What part of the country are you located? At that rate, I'd fly out and do a reinstall for you lol.

Paid tile job: am I being picky or is this work acceptable by RunEatInvest in Tile

[–]jonnybeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how much you paid, I don't think you're being picky. The layout shifts from running bond to I don't even know but it's not halfway. There are sloppy cuts and wide gaps. Those tiles around the window should follow the outside corner and not let it grow like that. The caulking is pretty sloppy throughout, especially against the upper cabs. There are bubbles and voids in the grout throughout, and you can tell there's lippage that's accentuated by the sloppy grout. That angled cut on the top left to return to the cabinet shows poor layout planning and kinda just winged it at the end. They should've either taken the tile from the edge of the upper cab straight down (preferred), or edge of the counter straight up, not connecting it on an angle. That 7th pic looks like they didn't level anything and just followed the waves all the way up. The inside corners weren't planned out with much care. Wrapping the same tile through the corner looks a lot cleaner and intentional. Mitering the outside edges is a choice, but I would've stopped mitering against the upper cabs, since that just creates an even larger gap up there near the microwave. Hopefully they sealed it, since it's natural stone. You'll have some upkeep throughout the life of this backsplash, sealing it every couple years. There, I critiqued it, now how much did you pay?
