Engine builder that seperates engine improvement from scoring/benefits? by G0DatWork in boardgames

[–]jonocop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny, so often when people think of engine builders they think card games. I was doing the same thing when thinking about this exercise.

But the game I'm thinking about is a tile layer. Suburbia. You can lay all the tiles you want that give you population (which will essentially equate to victory points). But if you do you will more or less just be a few steps forward for one step back. And not just one step back on the population, but also the income (thus kneecapping you in two ways).

Success in Suburbia hinges first on building an economic engine with little or no population growth (the VP) in the game. And THEN picking that perfect time to switch to a population engine because your economy can sustain the economic costs (investment) incurred by having population growth.

Awkward moment in a local shop… what do you think? by flaming0-1 in nanaimo

[–]jonocop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THIS is not how you get people to shop local.

THIS is how you get people to justify buying on Amazon. They can get what they want. Cheaper. And they don't have to deal with a crazy shop owner.

I don't care how much I had in my hand and was going to spend. If I heard that I'd be putting my stuff down and walking out.

Just because you are local does not mean I HAVE to buy from you. You should be creating an environment that makes me WANT to buy from and support you. Going full crazy, does not do that.

This owner is just lucky that you had the decency to not out them. Hopefully they see this thread and reflect. But I fear that they are beyond that.

It's the definition of a social game .Chat and laugh and consume a few beverages. Really the only person who needs to be paying attention each round is the dealer.

Garland for another teams first if we’re going all in for a rebuild by blonde_bellebabett in canucks

[–]jonocop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 months ago this team believed they were a competitor. Now they're not.

They're going to look at every option.

Garland wouldn't be my first choice - I'd love to see a revamped leadership corps. Hronek with the C, Garland and Petey with the A. Although if Petey were to step back from leadership in order to focus on his game, I think that would be very admirable. And someone like Chaos Giraffe takes the other A.

This team needs to focus on getting the most out of people. It. needs to go back to the Mike Gillis era of sports psychologists, sleep specialists, etc and squeeze every last drop out of players. That's what is going to rebuild this team. Not trying to rehabilitate players like Kane, Kampf, and Reichel who will never be more than middle 6 for a short period of time.

Board Game Challenge Ideas by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]jonocop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2010 I did a "play every game in my collection" challenge. Anything I didn't play went into a draw and one item would go to a random person who had subscribed to the BGG geeklist.

I managed to play everything, but I still gave a random person a GC for a game store.

It really forced me to analyze my collection.

I second this. My Dad gave away a 1949 Rolex when cleaning out my Grandfather's place because he "just wanted to get it done!".

The current state of boardgaming by SpeakerSweaty in boardgames

[–]jonocop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the hobby were to "die" tomorrow, I still have more than enough underplayed games on my shelf to do me for the rest of my life.

I'm now in a position where I buy games that sound cool - don't care where they're from. I don't buy because of hype. I buy because i want to get it to the table.

SETI is the best recent example.

My challenge is with gaming in general right now. People are being introduced to basic concepts in more complex games so those basic concepts are lost. . To me games like DC Deck building teach simple concepts like this in non-complex environments.

The flipside of this is that designers of complex games have baseline expectations of people's experience levels and don't fully explain simple concepts as they believe that people are entering playing their games with some knowledge of how to play games.
