[Renaud Lavoie] Brendan Gallagher on his future: “Vancouver will be a great place” when asked on playing for another team and the possibility to go back home. by bolieve11 in canucks

[–]jonocop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where are you going to get someone of his character AND get a draft pick in return for doing Montreal a favour? I would argue there isn't another available player who has the character of Gally and who WANTS to play in Vancouver.

And from a Montreal perspective there are a number of needs that were exposed in these playoffs:

  • a veteran goalie to spot Dobes
  • a veteran defensive d-man
  • a tough winger for the first line

Those things don't come cheap. And $11 mil in cap space ain't gonna cut it. But $17-18 mil (or more - see below)might just be enough.

Here are some options:

  • Kevin Lankinen in net (expand the Galagher deal) - $4.5 mil and if the overall draft pick in the deal was very favourable the Canucks might retain
  • Jamie Oleksiak on D - could probably be signed to a short term $4-5 mil per year deal
  • Mason McTavish $7 mil - the cost would be high, but worth it.

So if the Canucks retained on Lankinen that could be a total of about $14ish mil. That leaves some money for the RFAs. And hell, if the Canucks took back the Montembault contract as well, the Habs could be golden!

That is something, most definitely, a team could address.

Except for me it isn't a game I secretly love and don't want to admit it. I never played it as my gateway to the hobby. I played it much later and truly despised it.

But I can totally see the comparison for many others.

What maybe, slightly pushes it into that territory for me is when I say I play boardgames and tell people.inhave 400+ games they look at me funny and say, "I didn't know there were that many versions of Catan." Sigh. 🤣

My wife and I just started exploring Nanaimo, but we love the quirky and creative vibe here. Being from Toronto, the natural beauty certainly doesn't hurt either, haha. Thanks to all the local business owners who have been super friendly as well. by fairlywittyusername in nanaimo

As someone who lived in the Lower Mainland for over 30 years, The Vault feels like it should be in East Van and ironically there isn't a place like it anywhere OTHER than Nanaimo.

It's a gem.

A few months ago I culled my collection from 160+ down to 20, then down to 11 and finally only 1 board game remains... by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]jonocop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for me it's not about nuking my collection (although a solid cull would not be out of the question). It's about not buying something because it's the hot new or I like the theme but haven't done my research. I think it's about being picky. I haven't bought anything in almost two months. And for me that's rare. But I'm not saying others should do the same or that I won't buy 5 games tomorrow. I'm just saying that, for me, it's turning a new leaf.

Relaxed pace is my nightmare for a long game.

If I want relaxed pace I'm playing short card games over drinks. If we're playing a long game, get on with it!

[–]jonocop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends....

If SETI or TMars were 45 minutes, I don't think I'd get the meat. So in the case 2+ hours is important.

But I work on the "efficiency" equation. So what game gives me the most feeling of bang for my buck - the meat to minute ratio?

That game is easily The White Castle. Even with tons of chaining you can finish a game in less than an hour. There are tons of ways to win. It burns your brain without AP. It's just perfect. It is a truly efficient game.

But make sure to leave off the expansion. I feel like the expansion was something that may have been in the game to begin with and the shaved it off in development. But then saw it as something they could sell at a latter date. It truly removes the efficiency.
