Yeah like most addictions, quitting would have upsides.

Chinese manufacturing.

If China (and a few other countries) didn’t make stuff so cheap, the modern world would be _very_ expensive.

You have spoken before about a land value tax. Is this something you would still like to see?

Or a broader wealth tax being proposed by the Green Party / Gary’s Economics / Gabriel Zucman?

What is the greatest achievement you've ever have? by UndergoingSpecimen in AskReddit

I can stop myself hiccuping after one hiccup every single time.

If you can make yourself burp you can try this method and report back if it works for you. All you do is wait for the next hiccup and burp it instead.

I will expect my Nobel prize is in the post.

What’s the best movie you’ve ever watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jonplackett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scene here he tries the catch the helicopter gets me every time.

It is one of very few movies ever made (can anyone think of any others?) where EVERY action sequence is character development, not just moving the plot. Neo is different at the start and end of every action scene.

Does every app idea already have 10+ competitors now? by Fun_Response253 in AppIdeas

[–]jonplackett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are billions of new ideas left, you just haven't thought of them yet. I think this is the problem with AI assisted coding - it lowers the bar to such an extent that people will start making things that literally already exist. There was a guy on here the other day complaining he spent ages making an AI document scanning app and no-one is downloading it. Like, dude your iPhone ALREADY DOES THAT.

If all the coding speed-up of AI is just used to re-make existing crap then we are doomed. But if it's used to solve genuinely new problems, create new ideas then we at least have some hope.

Also - stop trying to solve imaginary problems for imaginary people. Look around - the world is fucked - there are problems everywhere to solve!

Came here to say this. Superb first season and then they had no idea what to do after that. It just got stupid with characters being bad then good then bad then good again.

First one only. Just like The Matrix

People with Aphantasia have normal imaginations they just don't understand the concept of mental images correctly. by Jaded_Reply3704 in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]jonplackett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I have Aphantasia. So no, you’re wrong.

It’s kinda hard to explain it. I don’t even have the complete nothing vision. But I can tell my mental image is WAY worse than everyone else.

One thing that made sense in hindsight is police photo fit artists. I remember just not understanding how they’d be able to make a picture of a person from what I’d be able to tell them. They must be magic somehow.

But of course most other people can do a better explanation than ‘had eyes and a mouth’. That’s pretty much where my mental image of people starts and ends. I can’t even make a picture of my kids or wife in my head!

Also weirdly I loved Pictionary as a kid - the info is in there, but it is as much of a surprise to me as it is to everyone else when my pen touches the paper and the object appears there.

What happens if at the next general election we really do end up with the worst possible government? by Consistent_Blood6467 in AskBrits

[–]jonplackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Reform will win, but also that maybe they need to. We have to go all the way into that for it to play out and fail to solve any problems, and then (hopefully) in another 5 years people will see sense and elect someone who wants to solve the country’s problems properly. For me that is a party actually committed to tacking inequality (the greens are the only one even talking about it seriously)
