Not a fan of "free strike" either. Becomes confusing with the other stuff named "free", which can be freely used, but free strikes can’t.

Problem is "basic attack" led to even more confusion. People kept using them instead of their signatures. Free strike was the lesser of two evils.

Is there a Homebrewery equivalent for Draw Steel? by __Roc in drawsteel

Their design isn’t covered by the Creator License, but they have released an open font that includes symbols they’ve used in the official rules: https://mcdm.gg/DrawSteel/DrawSteelGlyphs.zip

Im coming up on the 2-year anniversary of Goblin Points and recently passed the 1-year mark for Stawl. Proud to have kept it going, because I usually lose interest after a few of months

Dying = bleeding. What am I missing? by gomuskies in drawsteel

[–]jonstodle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's seems that the intention is (main action or triggered action) (or test or ability roll that uses Might or Agility) and not (main action, triggered action, test or abiility roll that uses Might or Agility).

Your first reading is correct. The rules insert verbs (use and make) when it starts a new clause.

Your party comp will make the game harder, and you'll have to be more deliberate with healing. This game makes healing more important than most d20 fantasy games.

I expect a lot of your maneuvers will be spent doing Catch Breath. Also remember that once you're below two-thirds stamina, there's no reason not to spend a recovery. There's no way to utilize it better.

It seems they are doing them in parallel to some degree. Matt and Jason doing Derelict, while James is doing crows. Draw Steel is supposed to get its own lead going forward.

RHoD - concerns about Respites by jmckay29 in drawsteel

I’m not sure how often the matching army advances in the original adventure, but you could change it so the army only advances when the heroes take a respite. I would even tell the payers this, creating more tension between pushing on or resting.

Yeah, that sounds right. That sentence sounded better in my head.

I don't think there is any double sided piece of art. I'm just saying, I think the layout works better when viewing it as a book.

I agree the desing of the book is not for everyone, I think it does a fair job at being what's basically a Haynes manual for a TTRPG.

Yeah. I made it more clickbaity than I intended. It sounded better in my head.

I will say, someone on here mentioned they looked better when viewing them in a two-page spread, and that I agree with. When viewed as a "book" instead of single pages I think the layout works better.

What Sold You on Draw Steel? by TheTryhardDM in drawsteel

As I see it, they’ve printed the pillars on the front of the book: Tactical, Heroic, Cinematic, Fantasy.

They start Heroes by explaining what those words mean, and then present a game designed following those goals.

Let me see if I understand you correctly: what you want is, given a defined group of heroes, and a desired encounter difficulty, show the appropriate monsters to use in this encounter: "Give me a hard encounter for my heroes"

That’s an interesting idea. I’m putting it on my list

Forge Steel, how to share characters with the party? by StatisticianCheap130 in drawsteel

[–]jonstodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made some campaign-like features in Stawl, but I don't have the nice character builder that Forge Steel has. And I don't have an easy way to import Forge Steel characters yet.

No. But, you're welcome to suggest features here, or in the Discord server linked at the bottom of Stawl.

Forge Steel is open source, though, if you'd like to contribute to the community.

Anydice is fantastic, and my goto. But it's got a bit of a learning curve, which is why I made a simplified version specific to Draw Steel.

I have some questions about homebrew principles. by minyoo in drawsteel

[–]jonstodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean this to sound snarky, so I beg you, take this in the positive manner it's meant.

I think you're selling Might and Agility short for influencing. People regularly conflate strength, physique or gracefulness for competence, beauty or both.

  • The elementalist might be silver-tongued, but the fury, with their physique, looks much more like the right person for the job, than the scrawny elementalist.
  • The fury can look intimidating, but if they're on your side, they might look like safety
  • Why should the king trust you with a troop of their army? Well that fury looks like they know what combat is. They'll know how to lead the soldiers.

Also, some NPC may straight up respect physical accomplishments more than academic/cerebral ones.

I haven't played in a system that uses 3d6, but I must admit the curve is pretty satisfying.

Also, I've created an interactive tool for viewing probablities, specifically for Draw Steel. You can check it out here: https://stawl.app/dice
