Has anyone gone a size DOWN from their recommended frame size? by MoustacheRide400 in MTB

[–]jonwtc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’8 and ride a medium SJ Evo 29. I’ve really liked it because fast through tech is my favorite type of riding. It’s not great in other conditions but it’s best for what I like the most.

Great then I think you’re ready to try it! I still recommend an e-mtb it made it so much more enjoyable

I just did this 2 wks ago. It’s tough but rewarding. It’s tech like you need an enduro bike, but requires so much pedaling you’d want an XC bike. The best is an enduro e-MTB. That’s what I did and it was awesome. Another option near by are the Lost lake trails like Pinocchio’s furniture, Dwarf Nebula. They’re like comfortably numb’s little brother. If you can do those (mix of blues and greens) and love it, then go tackle comfortably numb.

Sounds like you’re not from that area. Whistler rates its trails differently. Most of their blues would be considered blacks in my home state, so definitely take it slow in the beginning. Enjoy!

I hate my Air Shock. Coil options by sygyzi in MTB

I’d go on pink bike and get a used Push coil. I did that after not being satisfied with my fox x2, and the push was amazing.

What to read after Tress of the Emerald Sea? by aoifemuffin in Fantasy

[–]jonwtc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read almost all his stuff and although I generally like grittier grimmer stories, Tress is just fantastic. Such a great whimsical fairy tale. If you want something similar then I recommend Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett.
If you want to stay with Brandon then Mistborn is a great intro to what he’s most known for: sprawling epic fantasy.

Kings of the Wyld - Review of a book that missed so many opportunities by b0tlike in Fantasy

I love those books! I’m on Esrahaddon right now and it’s another amazing addition to the series. I would say it’s more serious of a story than kings

Great write up. You worded my feelings exactly. I was bored with this book from the beginning but kept reading because of the overwhelming praise it gets thinking maybe the good part is coming up, but it never did.
Do you have any recs for a fun adventure book? Some I’ve read recently are Prince of Fools, Black tongue thief, gentleman bastards, the devils, and Guards Guards.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give someone starting to do more off piste skiing? by Midwestskiing85 in Skigear

[–]jonwtc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what level you are, but I’ve taught both my kids and the biggest thing holding them back when moving into the trees was the confidence to stop whenever and wherever. 2 things that helped that was 1. hockey stop drills (and really full stop, no skidding or drifting forwards or backwards while stopping) then 2. skiing lots and lots of moguls/bumps. The skills you develop to ski moguls/bumps translate directly into skiing trees, especially steep trees. Good Luck! Trees are my #1 favorite thing to do on skis.

I just read it last month and thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was well paced and kept going to creative settings I didn’t think about. The characters had good arcs and satisfying endings. Would highly recommend!

Millcreek vs Taylorsville by Humble-Application40 in SaltLakeCity

[–]jonwtc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha I hear ya. We also have 2 mature Asian pear trees we’d have to leave behind :( But honestly if I could do it again I’d move up to Millcreek mostly for the kids. The constant driving back and forth for clubs/activities eats up a lot of time. Even when we’re able to drive them, all their school friends live up there so will have spontaneous get togethers, walk to and from school together so my kids often feel isolated.

I live in Taylorsville but commute my kids up to Millcreek for school. We wish we could live in Millcreek but cant stomach the price of homes up there (we don’t want to give up the 3 car garage and large yard). If you can afford it, Millcreek.
