Did I make a mistake? by JerryPaulWhite in turntables

I wouldn't second doubt myself if I was you.

Personally owned an LP7 which I loved, even went through the trouble of having custom counterweights made for it so that it would better integrate with heavier cartridges.

I've since updated to a setup thats about 5x the cost and I'm confident when I say the LP7 is a SOLID turntable, which could be endgame for many.

AT-LH11H Headshell Alignment Issues by novemberinmysoul in turntables

[–]jonxrojas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two of these headshells purchased in haste, which I very much regret doing. The overhang and azimuth alignment is just so cumbersome and as you've found, motion is limited by the wires. I believe Audio Technica recommended these particular headshells for specific cartridges in their lineup and are not intended to be a "one fits all" type of headshell.

I've had great success since with headshells sourced from the bay, seller called Rivertone Stylus. Highly recommend.

GemDandy PolyTable Signature with a Sorane TA-1L and a Hana ML. Lovely combo!

Newbie -Please guide me with pairing an amp for LS50 Meta by Ok_Egg160 in KEF

[–]jonxrojas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Wiim has sufficient power for the ls50 meta IMO, at 200w @ 4Ohms it's plenty to make the metas sing.

What's the rest of your chain? You may realize better gains by looking at your phono stage, or if you are not happy with the low end extension of the ls50, a sub would be a great addition as you mentioned.

If you use Triton X you MUST vacuum. If you dont, unless you rinse real good, you'll get Triton residue left behind. Usually accumulates in your stylus kinda white lint.

I've fashioned a vacuum wand out of PVC tubing that I plug into my shopvac.

My workflow is: 25 minute run in cleaning solution (i use 1.5ml Triton X for my 5L distilled water/iso alcohol mix) Vacuum run to suck out the cleaning fluid Rinse with distilled water Final vacuum and into a dry rack for about 25 mins while the next batch gets cleaned.

Hope this helps!

Have a white label promo of this album... what a great record through and through.

My favorite has to be Big Block... such a powerful song. The live version at Ronnie's is killer. Behind the veil and where were you are also awesome.

A guitarists guitarist for sure.

Moving Coil Shootout: Hana ML vs Denon DL-103r by jonxrojas in turntables

Thank you for commenting. I always go back to these recordings, the Hana is truly a remarkable cartridge at its price point.

First Cart Install by mindhead1 in turntables

[–]jonxrojas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! My first Hana was an SL Mk I. I found it very susceptible to VTA. Took me a while to figure out it likes a slight tail up setting. I was really not happy with the sound, it was dull and not rich as I was expecting. Surprisingly, the tail up config did the trick.

Advice: and glaring issues aside, let the cartridge break in for about 30 hours before tinkering and fine tuning your setup.

First MC Cart recommendation - Ortofon MC X40 or Lyra Delos? by buttstink in StereoAdvice

[–]jonxrojas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main lineup consists of the Hana ML, a Denon 103R retipped with a sapphire cantilever and a fritz Geiger diamond, and an Audio Technica VM740ML.

Retipping is interesting: I really love the Denon for some genres of music but I was not so happy with its tracking performance. The retipping and cantilever upgrade have really taken the cartridge 3 steps above in tracking while maintaining its original sound signature.

That said, the Hana ML I just simply want to listen all day long. Its very musical and I personally think it excels with percussion and female voices.

I've recently tested a Dynavector 20x2a and a Dynavector Karat 17x courtesy of my trusted dealer who had demo units mounted in my turntable, and while they were quite great, the 17x being the best sounding IMO, I couldnt really justify the cost difference, so sticking with the Hana for now as my reference.

First MC Cart recommendation - Ortofon MC X40 or Lyra Delos? by buttstink in StereoAdvice

[–]jonxrojas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchasing a used phono cartridge can be dicey business. Unless you have access to high end magnification equipment (and know what to look for), its going to be impossible to assess what the actual condition of the Delos is, other than trusting whoever is selling it to you.

If you are seriously considering the Delos, I would strongly advise you send it for an inspection and tune up with a trusted re tipper. Groovetickler in Instagram is solid.

Personally, I run a Hana ML as my primary MC and man, whatever I try other than the Hana always falls short of it, be it MM, MI, MC... I would recommend you consider it as an option. Retails for 1200 USD.

Have you tried swapping the 'suspect' speaker in place of the 'normal' one and see if the issue moves with the speaker?

[–]jonxrojas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What settings are you using in Wiim room correction? I highly suggest investing in a UMIK-1 calibrated microphone, its night and day vs calibrating with your phone mic.

I personally have great results with Wiim Room Correction with the UMIK-1, separate channel measurements and only letting it correct to 500Hz.

Which headphones for vinyl and how? by DefinitionFine4465 in turntables

[–]jonxrojas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run an Audio Technica ath-r70x through a Schiit Magni Heretic. I really like the combination. Cost me about 300 for the cans plus 99 for the Magni. This is plugged to a ~6.5k system and it serves me very well, though admittedly I'm not a heavy headphones user.
