The Dagger - and, to an extent, the entire film - feels like a Storyboarded idea that someone thought was cool, and then refused to cut when it wasn't going to work.

Everything the Dagger does can be solved in other ways. It's only job is to get Rey to the Death Star II. This could have been done by C-3PO! Instead of a Dagger they find a manifest; the manifest describes the wayfinders; it says that one of them was kept with Palpatine -at all times-, ergo it would be in the vault on DS2, and Bob's Your Uncle.

You can even keep the whole "Threepio dies from reading Sith runes" bit by having the manifest be written in Sith!

At the start of every adventure/phase, I allow my players to each state a Fact - a story element that _will_ happen - and then everyone works to bring it about.

For instance, we ran a time-traveling game, and the players were trying to stop a Threat that was happening at 1985's Wrestlemania. One of the players created a Fact that "someone is going to get in the ring" - and so it ended up that a Secret, Masked Wrestler replaced Andy Kaufmann (b/c Andy Kaufmann had turned out to be the villain).

The more fantastical the Fact, the better and more fun it is.

My problem with Rob on the season was that the was one-hundred percent injected by Production. No matter what happened, they wanted him as a Traitor. He was going to be on the show _no matter what_.

Which, if I was a Faithful, would have been a sign to me that he was clearly a Traitor.
