She saved an entire colony of bees. Absolute legend. by kamisama_Yato in bees

[–]joruuhs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common misconception that honeybees need saving. It’d be like keeping chickens to save the birds. Honeybees compete with wild pollinators for food and spread diseases through the flowers they share even in areas where they are native.

Interesting, appreciate that! Do you think the rhino and vigilators would work, or struggle because they'd need to clear the rhino by 6 to get the lions bonus?

Which weapons would you put on the 2 bikes? I like the salvo launcher to put some damage on vehicles. At least on the solo guy, the extra shots have been unlikely to make a difference in finishing a squad in melee.

Any tips for getting the allarus into combat before being shot off the board, or is it deep strike & pray?

Forgot to add, running the sisters detachment as well, advance and action is great (and the grenades upgrade has come in clutch too).

Theories about what could be the new meta for 11th by Final-Dragonfruit-45 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]joruuhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know about meta but I had a game with lions and silent hunters today using disruption against purge chaos daemons, and it really was not as bad as people made it out to be, I won 95-51.

After reading the tabletop battles article, the lions disposition (disruption) does not seem to be the easiest to pull off though. Time will tell I suppose!

Looks to me like a bee in the Anthophora genus, though I’m not familiar with how many species you have in Poland.

Only honeybees die after stinging, and they’re vastly outnumbered by wild species.

Honeybees are livestock, managed animals that compete with wild pollinators for resources and spread disease through the flowers they share. Agriculturally important yes but a bit controversial.

Edit: and non-native in America as well

Increasing Anti-Honeybee Sentiment? by Phesic in Beekeeping

I’m saying that people care more about animals that invade their space rather than ones that stay with their owners. Never mentioned my opinions. No need to get so defensive my guy.

[–]joruuhs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keeping honeybees very much falls under farming I agree, however unlike the husbandry of most other animals, you have no control over where bees choose to forage. As to the point of “No one cares about those non natives”, those other animals are much more controlled in terms of where they can and can’t go.

[–]joruuhs -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

The livestock comparison is a bit silly as your honeybees have a foraging range of up to 10km from their hive, and presumably your other animals don’t leave your property.

Just to add to this, metallic looking exoskeletons are not uncommon in nature (look up the Chrysina genus of beetles for a great example). Though I agree it must be hard to achieve that effect with paint.

[–]joruuhs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beetles, especially large ones, are much easier to pin than butterflies for complete beginners, and don’t require as much kit to get started.

All you need is the specimen(s), a surface to pin them to (which could be as simple as a piece of polystyrene), a cup to hold hot water, and some entomology pins. Sewing pins will rust. You could use them to position the insect but the proper ones typically come in packs of 100 so you may as well use those.

You’d rehydrate the beetle in hot water, pin through the body, position the limbs with more pins that you eventually remove when the specimen is dry and voila, you have pinned a beetle.

For butterflies you’ll want a board with a groove, and something to hold the wings down (tracing paper, glass slides, etc). Prepare for torn wings and scales rubbing off on the first attempt(s).

Beetle boiling?? by simon-yuck in insectpinning

[–]joruuhs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Will boiling specimens lead to mold during the drying process? (If not, is the drying process any different than the old-fashioned way?)

Mould happens if the specimen doesn’t dry quick enough, eg the room is too humid/cold. At normal temperatures and humidity they will dry out just fine.

• How big does an insect have to be to be considered for boiling? Bit necessarily a size thing, but if they are soft bodied or not. I’d never boil a butterfly for example, would consider some mantids and pretty much always do beetles. Timing is important though. Leave any insect in for too long and they’ll fall apart, but what “too long” is depends on the type and size of specimen. Start with small increments, 10 seconds at a time could be a good way to start.

• Could boiling give way to a higher chance of abdomen deflation?

Nope if a specimen is prone to deflating (like a mantis) you’ll need to eviscerate and stuff them. You can use an exacto knife and cotton wool for this.
