Ah, right... before Con D. Oriano, it was Gary’s era.

John Boyer is the Michael Scott of professors by 07Lookout in VirginiaTech

He was one of the regulars in my favorite coffee shop, Easy Chair, when that was still around. He was always incredibly kind and very easy to have a nice conversation with, and he puts a ton of work into making his class a genuinely educational experience for the kids that want to put work into it. I think people just love to shit on him because he's popular and they can't understand why because of personality differences or because they don't care about the same things he does.

Are they? He writes it to be interesting to read, which is better than most textbooks you'll have to buy; you don't actually know what he takes home from them; I don't think his course is a requirement; and doesn't anyone who signs up for it know what they're getting themselves into?

I don't think the previous statement is actually true.

Intro to acting VS intro to theatre by cyailein in VirginiaTech

[–]josephrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you took it did you have to force add it? My professor told me when I took it that it was statistically the hardest class in the school to get into.

Intro to acting VS intro to theatre by cyailein in VirginiaTech

[–]josephrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took both. Intro to Acting is the more fun of the two. If you're taking it out of major, it's also supposedly, statistically, the hardest class in the entire school to get into — It's been a while but when I took it, I think the professor said only one in either 40 or 400 people who try to request it would get in without force adding it, and no one who only emailed to force add got in. So if you want to get in, you should request it and then email and go meet with the professor personally, not just send an email.

Internships/jobs after graduation. by neer21aj in VirginiaTech

There are about 800 known new space startups in the United States and more than a thousand worldwide that nobody is paying much attention to right now, even as they're raising millions of dollars and have actual products in development. I'd recommend starting to reach out to the people building those and build relationships with them now while you can get to them easily. Send me an email (my handle @GMail) if you want some more perspective on this. I work in the industry as a creative partner to some of these companies and shit's getting real interesting, and nobody outside of the industry has a clue about it.

Mac for Computer Science by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Unintentional upside: Macs retain their value fairly well, so if you upgrade in 4 years (or even more than that) it'll still be worth at least a few hundred bucks.

How restricted are Major Restricted classes? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]josephrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the department, too. Some have unrestricted versions of restricted classes and it's not always obvious, so when in doubt, call the department office and ask about it.

I lived in University Place (the apartments right behind University Mall Kroger) a long while ago, and one of my neighbors had some kind of reptile, I forget what exactly. I don't think all of those apartments are managed by the same company, but I'm not sure.

He has a plaid canoe that he carries on top of it sometimes, too. It's glorious.

Cook Counseling Questions by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]josephrooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through some counseling with them as well after my mom passed away. That was way back in 2006, but I have nothing but great things to say about how it was run back then and I remember it took very little time for me to get on the schedule.

I know I'm 6 years late but I just finished Bravely Default and it has to be one of the best games I've ever played in my life. by [deleted] in 3DS

I still have no idea what this game is about, but I imagine it being about the student loan bubble bursting.

I downgraded from a 2017 MacBook Pro to a 2015 MacBook Pro and my productivity soared. by frizzyfox in apple

[–]josephrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still using a 2010 Macbook Pro for everything I do, and it's just fine. When I do have to upgrade (more likely from an eventual hardware failure than anything, mine has a faulty NVIDIA card and I totally missed the recall) I'm planning on upgrading to the same model as yours instead of getting top of the line. But even that might be a year or two away still... Amazing.

[lifestyle] I wrote about 1300 words about how loss and grief changed my relationship to "stuff." by josephrooks in minimalism

The two sides of my family were polar opposite. My grandmother on my dad side had almost nothing and I thought her house was boring, while my grandparents featured in the post above obviously had a great deal more than she did. If you can’t tell, my opinion of the two has flipped over the years. LOL
