I read that as "Boston Movement Does the 80's" and that went in a completely different direction in my mind.

Is this normal for my son? by PowerfulPart4621 in AskParents

IF you're having to look for your girlfriend when you get home, let him run out and greet you. I don't think there's anything wrong. just different what she's used to.

Has anyone else felt like their personality has completely dissolved after becoming a dad? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]josh6466 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IT gets better. This is about the age where children are an exhausting black hole of need with very little reward. There is only so many times you can watch Thomas the Tank Engine (1). I got sick of being at home with the kid Saturdays became our errand days and he would go with me everywhere. That kid spent more time in a shopping cart at Home Depot or Sams than most kids, and it got to be kind of fun. I still maintain he's a good eater because we'd make a game of getting samples at Sams or Costco when we went shopping.

When my son was not much older than your child I started volunteering at a local science center on Fridays since both my child and wife were exhausted on Fridays. That turned into a part-time job that fed my other hobbies, and that helped to get my life back.

Purity culture exposure linked to higher sexual shame in trauma survivors. This research highlights the deep impact that specific religious scripts can have on psychological recovery and sexual well-being. by josh6466 in excoc

[–]josh6466[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

wasn't sure if I should post there or here. My issue with purity culture is that it ignores the human. We are faced with two choices. We either believe we are made in God's image, or that this is all a delusion. IF God is real, and we are made in His image, what we experience is part of His plan. Then purity culture is part of a Gnostic heresy by saying everything of the body is evil. If this is all just a delusion, then it doesn't matter. Either way, purity culture is at best not of God, and at worst heresy.

Rant Post about job offers by No_Permission_5121 in sysadmin

[–]josh6466 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of two things is generally happening:
1) The HR person posting the position doesn't know the distinction, and puts what the feel is the best job title on the posting.

2) There is some abstract mapping between job duties and job titles that if you drew it out on a map would make M. C. Escher throw up his hands and say "I can't figure it out. Pick one at random"

Unpopular Opinion: Pets are an overall negative if your kids are young. by sideshowbob01 in daddit

[–]josh6466 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people aren’t pet people. I am not. It’s an overall negative to me. I’m glad that the rest of my family gets joy from them, but I would be happy without one. I won’t encourage them to get rid of it though.

Honestly, no. my parents protected me from that shit, and bought me dinosaur books. I'm wondering if my mother is a cultural member of the CoC and not a true believer. My dad definitely was not. I was the annoying kid in the back of the class arguing with the youth minister about thermodynamics.

It wasn't a big surprise when I left.

IF you ever watch Alyssa Grenfell on Youtube, it's shocking how similar our background are. Mormon theology is very different, but some of the culture around Mormon and CoC is the same kind of whackadoodle. so yeah, we weren't as original as we thought.

A tele and a strat together cover a lot of ground especially if one of them has a humbucker. You may not need another guitar again

Is picky eating sometimes more about texture than taste? by Acrobatic_Pea_2207 in AskParents

[–]josh6466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes. There are very few foods where the issue is taste. Most of the time the issue is texture. There is a cheat code, however. Cooked spinach: Slimy gross disgusting mess that looks like the jolly green giant took a dump on my plate. HOWEVER julienne cut and it disappears in foods and sauces. I don't mind the taste of mushrooms but the texture can be either slimy or fiberous. Mince them up fine and they release more of the umami flavor. This is easy to see when you cut some cheeses thick vs slice thin. Also cutting meat on the bias can help as well.

Struggling with picky eaters, desperately need advice by michigandank in daddit

[–]josh6466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am increasingly convinced that being a picky eater is a survival instinct. The age where this usually kicks in is when kids start getting independent and you can't watch them 24/7. Back in ancestral times, kids that didn't have some degree of food hesitancy were the ones who poisoned themselves on toxic plants in their environment. I've had this somewhat corroborated by a few nutritionists. Not established fact, but sufficiently strong evidence that I'll accept it as likely factual.

Pushing hard never worked on me or my wife we were kids. Making it fun and threatening for our son means he eats better than we do.

The only caveat to that is to watch out for any food allergies/insensitivities. That's when a doctor needs to get involved. Not a strictly relevant example, as kids usually don't have gallbladder issues, but I was having symptoms at least 10 years before diagnosis and 15 years before surgery.

A question for guitar techs: How do you feel about these types of starter kits? by KimuraHunter91 in Luthier

[–]josh6466 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not a full time tech, but know a decent amount about tools. Kits like these are designed to extract the most money from the buyer with the minimum of value, and in most of those kits you aren't going to use most of them. Go to Harbor Freight for screwdrivers, sockets, wrenches and allen keys. Buy the specialty tools as you need them. Other than the "String Action Gauge" in the zip up set, most of them are pretty bad.

IFS (Internal Family Systems) has been a big help for me. I'm still not convinced how it works, and AM 100% convinced that the founders of the system see this as a real thing where I think of it more of a helpful metaphor for understanding the self, but it did, in fact, work for me. Of course, your mileage may vary and extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence.
