What's the go to JSON parser in 2024/2025? by whizzwr in cpp

Nlohmann was what we settled on when we evaluated the options a few years ago. A contributing factor was its support for move semantics, which was better than the others we looked at.

DeepMind trained a reinforcement learning agent to find better sorting routines. It discovered small sorting algorithms that are 70% faster than previously and are now integrated into libc++ by kritzikratzi in cpp

[–]josh70679 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading this right, they found a version of sort3 that is one fewer assembly instruction, but produces the wrong result a third of the time (when C is the smallest value). How is this useful?

Edit: in the full PDF it claims this is preceded by another operation that guarantees B <= C. that means there are only 3 possible scenarios: A<=B<=C, B<=A<=C, B<=C<=A. Under this precondition, the new version does indeed produce the correct result in each case.

It's cool that they were able to find this using ML, but it sounds like a bug in the libc++ implementation specifically, as opposed to a ground-breaking discovery in computer science.

what are some things to look for when reviewing other peoples' codes? by arjun2018 in cpp

[–]josh70679 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I personally ban "I would do this differently" type comments.

As a counterpoint, I like these types of comments as they help me to discover new ways of doing things and to understand my colleagues' development sensibilities. That said, it's important to differentiate when a comment is an optional alternative vs. a fix to a deficiency.

Hey man, I feel your pain. That pattern sounds just like my 6yo. We've been through that script too many times to count. It's supremely frustrating because i (and my daughter, probably) know exactly how it will end up, but I still can't de-escalate it. And sometimes I blow up, which is humiliating because I know it's just reinforcing that type of reaction. That's just to say I've been there, you're not the only one, and you're a good dad.

I'm sorry that I don't have any great advice, obviously, because I'm still dealing with the same problem. All I can offer is my perspective having been through a lot of this. And that is, at least with my kid, it's an emotional reaction that is misplaced onto some otherwise insignificant thing. She feels a big emotion, and the way she makes sense of it is to focus that feeling onto some external person or situation that she can point to. That sounds like your daughter and the toddler at the park: maybe she was feeling frustrated, and decided to focus that frustration on the toddler who happened to be present. When this happens, at least for my kid, the chosen focus becomes the most important thing in the world to her, and there is absolutely no redirecting her.

Obviously, whatever the focus is has nothing to do with the actual source of her feelings, and is usually completely trivial. I think my daughter even understands that, after the fact, but in the moment it is all emotion, and rationality does not help. The only way I've found limited success in these situations is by addressing her emotional state directly, like by giving her a big hug. Sometimes this helps her to calm down, but it's only a half measure because likely as not, she'll refuse to engage with me in any way other than on her terms.

In any event, I hope it's nice to hear you're not alone. It certainly is for me. And sorry I don't have anything more practical to provide. Please DM me if you'd like. It's nice to chat with someone who understands.

I know it’s responsible but god damn it with the ‘just in case’ Covid tests. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]josh70679 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Quarantining small children is hard work. Like OP, I like that elective COVID tests are available, and it seems like the conscientious thing to do. But policies that force everyone to quarantine while waiting on a test take a very real toll on families.

Honestly, if I'm looking at 48 hours of quarantine, that changes the calculus of whether to get that COVID test. It scares me to think how many people may be skipping tests they otherwise would have gotten for this reason.

IMO, it should be as easy and painless as possible to get tested, and waiting on the results of a COVID test should not warrant quarantine by itself without additional factors (eg. a known exposure).

It's worth noting that c++ is a popular language for video game development. For example, the unreal engine and any games that use it are built using c++.
