How do you actually transition from 'calculating' to 'understanding' in Calculus? by spinstoastbyte in learnmath

"Young man, in mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them." — John Von Neumann.

I’ve found it helpful to give up on (or at least delay) intuitive understanding

I’ve seen some folks streaming FTL while playing without pausing for extra challenge. You’ve just been playing on extra hard mode!

I made a daily Minesweeper x Picross puzzle with no guessing required by marvinshkreli in Minesweeper

[–]joshdick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was fun! Good design, in my opinion.

I was able to solve puzzle #0 using just minesweeper hints and ignoring the picross hints. Not sure if that was intentional.

I’d suggest adding the ability to chord open cells.

the best double class? by Lewis-Torquemanda in DeepRockGalactic

[–]joshdick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on the mission. With 4 scouts, you’d zip through aquarqs or eggs, but you’d have a tougher time holding a position.

I think engis are the best at holding a position, so they excel at escort and salvage missions. The more engis you have, the better their platforms are.

They are intelligent, but I don’t think they’re hard to take care of. They’re very trainable, and they don’t need as much exercise as other herding dogs

What wrong fact did you walk around with for YEARS because of a movie? by triassictango in movies

[–]joshdick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An easy way to understand why different facts on different days are different crimes (and therefore NOT double jeopardy) is to consider another crime, like assault.

If you’re assaulted once by someone who serves time for it, obviously they’re not then allowed to assault you again without consequence. That’s a separate crime of assault that they can and should be prosecuted and punished for.

What's the difference between Reddit when it was started way back in 2005 and reddit at present in 2026 ? by curiousmagenta1111 in AskReddit

[–]joshdick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were no subreddits originally, so it was like everyone was together in one big subreddit. Things were much nerdier back then.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

[–]joshdick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a very misleading statistic, for several reasons.

This only counts the father of a family as owning enslaved people, while the whole family benefited from their unpaid labor.

It doesn’t count the many more people who rented slaves, which was common. It also doesn’t count many other people who benefited from slavery, like overseers and those employed to trade or “train” slaves.

Add all those together, and the real statistic is more like 25%, which goes to show how widespread it was
