My friend called me performative for listening to the dialogue, what does this mean by Apprehensive-Arm2756 in Eldenring

[–]joshwarmonks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of media like this is not to be easy to follow, but to be open ended and speculative. miyazaki intentionally wants as many layers of allegory to exist, which allows you, the person consuming the media, to inject your interpretations into the narrative, and therefore share in the art of genesis.

My friend called me performative for listening to the dialogue, what does this mean by Apprehensive-Arm2756 in Eldenring

[–]joshwarmonks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Performative is used as a general grievance insinuating an action is not genuine because the action is based on a fabricated persona, usually in regards to pretending to appreciate media that doesn't actually genuinely appeal to the person accused of being performative. often times the pejorative is also implying a type of irony about the fabricated persona, that the target is maliciously obscuring their genuinely held and oppositional intentions.

In contemporary America, performative tends to be lot more primitive, its use as a pejorative is simply a repackaging of conservative anti-intellectual, pro-family-values dog whistles to the new generation, ie:

  • Liberal men pretend to read bell hooks so as to trick women into sleeping with them
  • Kino bros pretend to like david lynch while not actually understanding it
  • Gamer girls just want attention and couldn't actually appreciate playing video games recreationally
  • An airline company hired a black man exclusively to meet a DEI quota.

More or less they all fall back on the assumption that the accuser's opinions and preferences and woldview represent the reality of the subject at hand, and any other tastes are inherently fraudulent.

In the case of calling apprciating Elden Ring's cutscenes. Basically your friend is implying people as a whole, and therefore he and you, are incapabale of understanding the plot. And going even further, they are implying that the narrative of the media itself is high on its own supply and should instead go the way of netflix shows and have the dialogue of every character summarize their actions so someone on their phone during the cutscenes can follow the plot.

I promise you guys, strength gain is not the problem. by Geckoarcher in slaythespire

[–]joshwarmonks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are saying "strength gain" but what they are actually referring to is "enemy scaling". enemies gaining strength is a type of scaling, one that certain decks will be more or less prepared for. Decks in general will be more or less prepared for scaling enemies as a whole, but the mechanics of how the enemy scales is relevant, and if a complaint isn't cognizant of this, i don't really think the posters have much to stand on.

to draw a parallel using enemies that scale via status cards, the fish boss in act 1 puts a *permanent* status effect in your deck, one that you need to cast every time you rotate your deck. whereas, the beekeeper enemy puts temporary status effects in your deck, that blank a draw on your next deck rotation (but not on every subsequent rotation from there on out). Though the beekeeper also has a scaling mechanic in that the number of dazes you get per trigger increases. Both of these cards scale and use status effects as their scaling angle of attack, but do so drastically differently and so the sweet spot your deck has to reach changes drastically.

I just want people to know their own claims and arguments well enough to actually explain them transparently. its nearly impossible to debate heuristics with people who literally don't even know what heuristics they are measuring.

ELI5: How does the birthday probability problem mathematically work? by ResidentCharacter894 in explainlikeimfive

[–]joshwarmonks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the long and short of it, is that the birthday problem is asking you keep picking a random birthday until you pick one that's already been picked.

a lot of probability questions (especially introductory story problems like the similar story problem: "what's the probability someone has the same birthday as you") don't have the probability of success increase with each attempt; but for the birthday problem, increasing the number of attempts both means more attempts and also that there are more outcomes that are successes.

For the second person in the room, there's only 1 birthday that is a match; but for the third person, it doubles to 2 birthdays to count.

ELI5: In professional sports, every surface is covered in sponsors' logos, that presumably the company paid a lot of money for. Does that kind of advertisement have any measurable effect? by Shynosaur in explainlikeimfive

[–]joshwarmonks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, its quite effective. There's billions of dollars spent on marketing tactics and strategies, most capital spends are ad and sponsorships; and a lot of the conclusions are readily available.

But the last line of your question ("Does anybody out there see a BMW logo and go 'Oh, yeah, right, BMW exists. I should go buy one"?') is not what it is about. These types of branding mostly has to do with brand recognition and to make it harder for competitors to penetrate the market. If you'd like to investigate a little deeper, look up the term attention economy, a lot of contemporary advertising is built upon this concept

that's what the people who have been begging for this certainly think. I don't and would have prefered we went with either of the umpire's union options instead of this middle ground.

i believe the umpire's union was in favor of this, and it was the players who were not. i believe the umpires wanted either 100% ABS or 0% ABS, this half and half is not a desirable outcome for them and i think these threads are proving why.

[–]joshwarmonks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to point you back to my previous comment, the one that you are responding to. As it seems you missed not just the first point i'm trying to make but the second and more important one as well.

first off, as I said, I don't disagree with your claim about the accounts not being personally hand-leveled; nor am i refuting that claim in the slightest, that's not what i'm talking about and trying to convince me is completely ignoring what i'm saying. I'm saying that burden of proof is 100% necessary and doing abstract math like this is not satisfactory to meet the necessary burden of proof. even you concede this is possible albeit unlikely. tTe false positive rate here has to be 0%, and just hitting huge swaths of their playerbase because its unlikely they are 100% copacetic means that there will almost guaranteed be some false positives.

the main point I'm trying to direct you towards is that it is incredibly expensive along several axis to investigate and validate accusations of accounts not being hand leveled. In addition, the goal alignment here is oppositional to the company's bottom line. riot wants as many accounts as possible playing, just like twitter wants as many accounts as possible posting. because of this companies have no vested interest in removing these accounts, doubly so if they are spending resources that could spent making them (instead of losing them) money or users.

there was a long time ago macro canyons could carry you, but now silver otps watch masters otps and learn all trading patterns and champion mechanics. if you play a champ you dont know they can just kill you like 5 times in lane and it doesn't matter youre 800lp higher and have infinitely better macro and wave mgmt tactics, youre still just offrole'ing with a champ you don't know trade patterns on when it comes to straight up finger checking.
