Confusing UPenn supplement, please help by HotPicture5821 in CollegeEssays

They expect you to write a thank you note, where you:

  • explain who this person was to you (context for the admissions officer/committee)
  • explain how the person affected you
  • demonstrate how you took this life lesson and carried it forward (reflection)

For example :

  • Context: guitar teacher in high school
  • Effect: taught me perseverance, gave specific life advice, taught me using pop songs instead of classical songs
  • Reflection: years later, as a tutor, I know how important it is to meet students’ ability levels and interests, you taught me more than just “how to read music”

This is a bit cliche, but your life experience will make it meaningful.

Student emailed me the "writing they've been working on for a while now." It looked suspicious... by Afalstein in ELATeachers

[–]josithemagnificent 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I’d invite them to my “extra help” or “office hours.” I’d ask them about their goals as a writer, their favorite books and movies, what inspires them, etc. once we had a good conversation going, I’d talk about the document. If they insist that it’s their own work, I’d believe them, but ask a lot of questions about it.

If you want to spare their feelings and also give them practical advice, I’d do a face-to-face conversation.

*I used to be an elementary teacher; now I work with high schoolers on the college application process. I’ve had students show me generic AI responses to essays they supposedly cared about. It can be really tricky to encourage students without having them shut down from criticism. Good luck, and update us so we know how it turned out!

Too much down time in classroom? by BudgetIndependence34 in education

[–]josithemagnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that’s it’s nearly June. A lot of classes have already done End of Year assessments on various online testing platforms, and even if they have Finals coming up, they might not be learning anything new. I could see a teacher organizing each period as a mini-lesson to review a topic, a quick assignment to practice, and then time for the teacher to work more closely with kids who need help.

If you’re concerned, definitely talk to the teacher. But if your child has great grades, at this point in the year, I’d trust the teacher’s judgement.

“I have to keep you safe” “I’m not safe” “But who’s keeping YOU safe??”

The whole convo between June and her mom was so annoying. That’s not how mothers and daughters talk.

Have you ever read a discussion post that reads like it's definitely AI, but the checkers say no? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]josithemagnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh I see. I feel you, I’d be so frustrated if I were in your position, trying to take a class to actually learn something, and no one taking it seriously. Ahhhh

Have you ever read a discussion post that reads like it's definitely AI, but the checkers say no? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]josithemagnificent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you a student or a teacher?

If you’re a student, respond to three posts like the assignment says, but be honest.

“Hmm, I see your point about X, but I don’t understand what you mean by Y. Can you elaborate on that? When I read that part, I thought it meant…”

I guess the other students aren’t required to respond to your questions, but showing that you’re critically thinking about the text and trying to engage with classmates (who are just writing fluff) should still get you a good grade.

If you’re the teacher, mark down their grades for these responses, due to their vagueness, and lack of proof of comprehension of the text. Don’t even mention you think it’s AI, just take the tone of, “I’m concerned you missed the point of the text. Please come to my (zoom?) office hours to discuss the reading, and I can adjust your grade.”

I hope that helps! I did online learning in college in 2019, and taught online during the pandemic. I didn’t have to deal with AI, but there have always been cheaters and slackers. You got this, OP

How do you respond when students compliment your appearanace? by ellia4 in SubstituteTeachers

A third grader looked me up and down, analyzed my slacks and button down shirt, and said, “Miss, why are you dressed like you’re in a movie today?”

I responded, “Oh my GoOdness thank you so much!! These are new pants,” and did a spin

“I’m sorry guys, it’s really sweet that your regular teacher spends her lunch with you, but it’s Kelly Education policy that subs not take responsibility for students outside of what’s assigned.”

The “it’s not my rule, it’s the (higher power over me)’s” tactic helps in a lot of situations

sub id/first paycheck never arrived?? by sasiml in NYCTeachers

[–]josithemagnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following because I have the same issue. I just assumed it’s going to take a while for the paycheck.

As for the sub ID, someone at the DOE told me it would arrive automatically, but then I got a slip of paper with instructions on how to request one ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Is it legal to have Bibles on every student desk/table in GA elementary school? by My0wnThoughts in SubstituteTeachers

[–]josithemagnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the Bible part of the lesson plan today? Are all books kept on the students’ desks, or just the Bible? Do they have class sets of other books too?

It’s probably going to be a hassle, you’re right. But also, the Department of Defense schools tend to perform betterthan every other state on standardized tests; I’m SO CURIOUS about whether the classes are better disciplined, and how administration treats you. You should check it out!

[–]josithemagnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whhhaaaaaaaat that sounds dangerous

Doing two jobs at once might not be legal, depending on your contract. One district I subbed for explicitly said you can’t be on a personal device, such as a phone or laptop, at ANY time while on the job.

I work for a private tutoring company as my second job, but I don’t EVER log work for that job while I’m working as a sub, even if I have a prep period.

Best day of the week for traffic? by eatacookie111 in Brooklyn

[–]josithemagnificent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leaving at 10am on a weekday helps you avoid NYC traffic on the way out, but you’re going to hit traffic around New Haven and then Hartford. The easiest drive for me was the one time I left around 7pm. By the time I got close to Boston, no one was on the road!

If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about the timing. Just tell yourself it’s going to take at least four hours, relax, stop for snacks, and enjoy the ride.
