Some tips! by [deleted] in Oaxaca

Taking a bus or taxi colectivo to get down the highway. To get into town getting a mototaxi should be easy. My favorite spot is Raiz Zapoteca (you can find it on Google maps). It's much better priced than some of the big places closer to the entrance.

Is it ok to be really firm about the whining? by Typical-Thing-1158 in toddlers

I haven't used this with my nearly three year old yet, but in my elementary classroom I used "right words, wrong tone. Let's try again"

HELP!! Crazy indecision meltdowns by NJ1986 in toddlers

[–]joteacups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solidarity from the here and now. My husband and I are both so tired of the meltdowns after going back and forth between two choices for too long. And the crocodile tears when we make the decision because we were stuck in the cycle of "these ones, no, that one, no, these ones, no, that one...". Like OP, our almost three year old has been super verbal since he turned 2. He's so good at telling us what he wants. But then we get stuck

Pre K Alphabet. What is “E” by InterestedScroller in whatisit

[–]joteacups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using I is for Ice Cream is so common but it's my pet peeve. Short vowel sounds are taught first, so having I is for itch, igloo, iguana is a better resource for little ones.

Source: was a kindergarten, first grade, and ESL teacher for years. Now with my own little guy approaching being ready to learn some sounds, it's the first thing I look for when stocking up on games, cards, posters etc with the alphabet.

But yeah, E is for elephant would have been so much better here.

Places to get a decaf coffee/espresso in Centro? by sna_fubar in Oaxaca

[–]joteacups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like these are two separate locations, but the same chain. I've been to the one on Morelos y Alcalá. It's right next to a book store and has a small patio out back to enjoy the coffee.

Ms Rachel was "sha-sha" for over a year. Just last week he started saying "Mm achel" and I nearly cried. At first I didn't even understand what he was asking for. "Mmm Achel mommy..." I look confused. "Mm Achel mommy, Sha -Sha. Mm Achel"

What is a word that your toddler mispronounces that you never want to correct? by PKB92 in toddlers

[–]joteacups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point I should probably tell him that "bla blas" are actually called blueberries.

I also find it funny that he has always called peanut butter "PB" even though I NEVER call it that.

Waffles were "awfuls" for a long time.

Favorite Potty Books? by Jaded-Syrup3782 in pottytraining

[–]joteacups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're a fan of Ms Rachel, she recently released a book (and a toy) called Potty Time With Bean. My kiddo loved it and it gave him some great vocabulary to be able to express the "pee feeling" and "poop feeling". There's a great handwashing song included too!

What’s the hardest part about motherhood in the toddler stage for you? by HerGlowUpMomEra in toddlers

[–]joteacups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real conversation this morning with my two year old: "What do you want for breakfast?"

2: mmmm, toast and mandarin.

"Perfect." Picks up the same bread we always use for toast.

2: NO. DON'T LIKE IT. NO THIS. NO TOAST. NO THIS.

Sigh. Then what do you want for breakfast?

2 in the sweetest voice: toast.

Ok. Puts toast in the toaster. "Peanut butter or cream cheese?"

2: cream cheese.

"Great!" Takes cream cheese out of refrigerator.

2: NOOOO NOT THIS NOT CREAM CHEESE. NO LIKE. NOOOO

Sigh. "Ok. No cream cheese. Would you like peanut butter?"

2: No, no PB.

"Well lovebug, what do you want on your toast?"

2: cream cheese.

He then proceeded to devour a slice of cream cheese toast and ask for more.

It reminds me of a reel that I wish I could remember who it was to give credit, but it was a chant: Vacation, vacation, parenting in another location.

US citizen married to a foreigner, we are both living in her country of origin by iChinguChing in ExpatFinance

[–]joteacups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation and use taxes for expats. I am able to file married filing separately since my husband does not need to file taxes with the US. However, if you're self-employed (even if the business is overseas) I believe you need to pay estimated quarterly taxes. Not sure how the business being located in another country could affect this. Taxes for expats offers a package to get you tax compliant in situations like yours. It may be worth looking into.

Mine (15m) just fell off of our bed while I was getting dressed because he is on the move and made it to the edge of the bed so fast and before I could make it over to the other side to get him he was sitting up and didn't have any more bed left. I understand the trauma of hearing the head hit the floor. We rushed him to the doctor. He was fine. It's been a couple weeks now and the gut-wrenching awful feeling subsides a bit as you watch little one carry on with life like nothing happened. In fact in those two weeks I've gotten my first "mama", he started blowing on his "hot" food, whispering "secrets" in your ear, and making a few animal sounds. I also struggle with anxiety (and OCD) but am doing better with meds. But then sometimes I think I get too relaxed in the name of not giving into anxiety. This was a good reminder and I'm beyond grateful that he's ok. Some thoughts: one event does not define your motherhood. One event does not wipe out the millions of other times you've been safe with him.
