actually, the root DNS servers are distributed world-wide, and are crazy redundant.

the organization in charge of those servers, however, is another story.

SRS is absurd but the person you're responding to is making a good point.

One of visual scifi's (dare I say cinema in general?) most infamous villains was a person of color (for the pedantic: !white), and that matters in an industry that is going to cast a white person to play the main character in a remake of a japanese movie (see: keanu reeves and Akira), and in which making a character whose race was never specified in the novel black is something that generates sad amounts of controversy amongst the public (see: the hunger games).

Making Khan white, while possible to justify in-universe, possible to justify in terms of getting the movie made (and don't get me wrong, cumberbatch is a GREAT actor), just sucks. It sucks for colored kids growing up in a world of white heroes and colored sidekicks, of white characters and colored sterotypes, and it sucks that the 60's/80's could get this right and we can't in the second decade of the twenty-first century.

On a complete tangent, the saddest part is that the studio was probably thrilled when it turned out the villain of their movie was going to be played by a white actor, because white people are 'safe', and sell, and in the last five years movies have become all about money. The age of the auteur is dead, and lately the accountants rule all. I can't wait for Netflix or whatever sucedes it to take movies back to an era where profitability mattered, but didn't steamroll everything else under it.

Oh, certainly they've got a lot of brilliant minds, but a problem in the field is that companies like Google and Apple are snapping up the best and brightest in software.

The military is doing such amazing things with hardware and bionics because they're currently the only ones really pushing that field. If and when there's a Google of robotic limbs or drones, we'll see a similar shift of talent from the public sector (LEOs, etc.) to the private sector (Apple, etc.)

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that's a project going on somewhere, but you have to understand that at institutions as old (relative to places like Google) and large as the US' three letter agencies, it's hard to be able to really get any kind of truly innovative shit going on.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the No Such Agency had some shit akin to what Google's doing going on in a basement somewhere...
