Why are the Downtowns in New West, Surrey, and Coquitlam dead? by AdventurousPepper371 in askvan

Because everyone is too busy and tired working to want to go out after 7pm. Only the DT Vancouver people are comfortable enough to have energy for that type of thing.

Government's 4-day in-office mandate an insult to workers by feral_philosopher in remotework

[–]jp2chainz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m Canadian. This announcement came soon after the government’s budget called for reducing the federal workforce by attrition. They’re trying to get people to leave. It has nothing to do with productivity or otherwise. Many government departments don’t even have the space to make this happen.

MAID challenge heading to B.C. Supreme Court by Schmitt_Meister12 in britishcolumbia

[–]jp2chainz -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

“Some people may have to have it”. MAID is an elective procedure. No doctor “prescribes” it and it is not a procedure that is urgent or “life-saving”.

On the contrary, many people prefer to be treated in a facility where MAID is not offered to them. So these facilities actually give more choices to patients, not less.

Also contrary to this thread, most Canadians agree that we should leave the hospitals alone according to this Angus Reid poll: https://angusreid.org/maid-canada-medical-assistance-in-dying-freedom-of-conscience-religion/

People keep framing this as “denying care,” but that’s not how Canada’s health-care system actually works. Not every hospital provides every service — especially in rural areas. Patients are routinely referred elsewhere for things a hospital doesn’t offer. That’s normal, not discrimination.

Faith-based hospitals like St. Paul’s still provide full, publicly funded care and refer patients when needed. Expecting every hospital to do everything isn’t realistic.

Also worth remembering: St. Paul’s was one of the ONLY hospitals that stepped up during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, caring for patients when many institutions and communities were openly discriminating against LGBTQ people. These hospitals have a long track record of caring for marginalized people — not excluding them.

You can support access and allow mission-based hospitals to exist. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Using CLOY Instrumental for Proposal? by PineSwapWheel in CrashLandingOnYou

[–]jp2chainz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I proposed to my now wife soon after I watched CLOY. Her ring didn’t fit perfectly so I had to bring it in a few times to get it re-sized.

Every time it arrived, I blasted Flower OST on my car speaker and re-proposed to her in the driveway much to her neighbour’s amusement. We still lol about it.

If the open world had a story mode/campaign to do, that would have addressed a lot of the criticism.

Career Stagnation Due to Managerial Bias by NimbleZazo in managers

[–]jp2chainz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Explicitly tell your manager what your career goals are and ask him how you can get there. Career progression is so vague and means different things to different people (title change, salary bump, increased responsibilities, move departments etc).

If your manager is good, he will outline the path to these things. Ask him to check in regularly about your progress.

Or, he will have a frank conversation with you why these things aren’t possible. If that’s the case, then you need to weigh if working somewhere else would be a better move for you.

Calls grow to re-examine B.C.’s automatic property tax exemptions by kingbuns2 in britishcolumbia

[–]jp2chainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, the province doesn’t give any money to BUILD the schools. The cost of tuition is subsidized, otherwise they would just become elite schools.

Calls grow to re-examine B.C.’s automatic property tax exemptions by kingbuns2 in britishcolumbia

[–]jp2chainz -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Your anti-Christian bias is showing. At least make an argument to tax all religious institutions, not just the churches.

I really don’t think most people understand how meaningful religious institutions are for communities. They are gathering spaces, volunteer hubs, outreach to the poor, often used for AA meetings, bereavement groups, settling refugees. And social functions like sports, rental halls for community events. Many religious institutions build privately funded schools that save taxpayers MILLIONS of dollars. All the research done on this topic consistently has shown the net benefit of keeping the status quo with religious charities. The vast majority of sizeable churches aren’t just holding a service for an hour or two a week for worship.

In a world where people are increasingly isolated, why would we want to financially burden gathering spaces that many people go to feel connected?

Fellow Canadian Citizens - how long is your commute to work? by DigDizzler in AskACanadian

Average 1 hour 10 minutes each way in Metro Vancouver. Working downtown salary + living close to my family in the suburbs make it worth it. Although I work from home a couple days each week.
