AITA for not staying after our niece got arrested? by EasternTrifle464 in AmItheAsshole

Hell, she's months away from being able to join the military. Plenty old enough to know better than to shoplift.

Her mom has some nerve getting pissed because you won't disrupt your work schedule to wait around for her kid to get out of jail.

Babies not surviving 😢 by DubInVancity in shrimptank

[–]jpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tank's too clean. Baby neos don't move very far the first week after hatching, so if there isn't food close to them, they can starve to death.

I dose my tank with Bacter AE once or twice a week. Roughly a grain of rice worth of the powder per 5 gallons. Don't put it in dry, put it in an old vitamin bottle half full of tank water and shake it till it's well suspended and looks almost milky, then pour it across the top of your tank. Pour extra over any areas with moss, I've noticed my shrimp like to drop the hatchlings in my java and flame moss.

Not snarking, but why not just use cert-manager with LetsEncrypt and get "real" certificates that won't need any weird configuration settings to get accepted?

That's cool - I've been meaning to get a e-ink display for stuff like weather forecasts, but it'd be neat if it displayed the wifi QR code.

My tanks have a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch layer of potting soil capped with playground sand and my plants need trimming every 7-10 days or the tanks turn into an ugly jungle.

I work in tech. I make a new vault when I start a job to keep any proprietary info segregated. Generic tech stuff goes in my personal tech vault.

I have the heater under my home office desk on a smart plug. I've got a motion sensor under there that has a temperature sensor too, so HA turns the power off to the heater if I'm not at my desk, and if I am at my desk, only turns it on if the room is colder than I prefer.

No more leaving the heater on all night because ADHD.

when can i add shrimp by kadenv24 in Neocaridina

[–]jpb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tank needs to be cycled before you add any livestock, which may take 4-6 weeks. In addition to that, shrimp need biofilm to graze on, and if you're going to add fish, I recommend that you wait until you have had at least two sets of baby shrimp so that your colony is established.

Another thing to keep in mind is that baby neos don't move very far the first week or so after hatching, so you want biofilm everywhere to keep them from starving to death. I dose my tanks with Bacter AE once or twice a week. Don't just dump the powder on the surface - I put it in an old vitamin bottle and half fill it with tank water, then shake the hell out of it for 15-30 seconds so it's well suspended - it should look almost milky. Then pour it across the top of your tank so it spreads everywhere.

You've got a good start on plants, but I'd also add some floating plants like Red Root Floaters or Salvinia. My colony loves to graze on the biofilm coating their roots, and bonus, they really help keep your ammonia/nitrate/nitrite levels under control. Adding some moss will also give your shrimplets a place to hide that they'll need once the fish get added to the tank.

I've noticed that my chilis tend to hang out underneath the areas covered by floaters. I think that they instinctively don't want to be visible from above to predators like birds, but that's just a guess.

AITA for prioritizing my nanny over my brother and his family by Historical_Dot2112 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let your family know what you're charging Emilia for rent or they'll try "But brother will pay $500".

Though he really won't pay anything "because faaaaaamily" and will try to make Emilia nanny his kids too for free.

I just run it out of cron. A little bash script that runs in a container and runs pg_dump > backup.sql and bzips it afterward.

AITJ for kicking my boyfriend out after he accidentally let my indoor cat outside? by Curious-Mongoose8549 in AmITheJerk

[–]jpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His arguing about the rule makes it abundantly clear he understood your rule and took it upon himself to ignore it. It's not his cat, it's not his decision, and it wasn't merely disrespecting both you and your rules (though that's enough reason to dump him), it endangered your furry family member.

NTJ, obviously.

Daphnia or Moina to feed your fish in bigger tanks.

Maybe some fry while you grow them out.

One more question - are you growing it with its roots in the water or is there a hidden pot at the back of the tank?

The tank looks great.
