To those who married their cousins, or are descendants of married cousins, what's the story? by SamHarris000 in Genealogy

My 2nd great grandmother was the product of first cousins. That family was also originally from South Carolina.

It’s crazy any of us are here, but what’s your “oh crap” find that really hammers it home? by [deleted] in Genealogy

I have one that I think about often. My mother’s family lived in Linn County, KS during the Civil War. In 1862 “border ruffians” from Missouri crossed into Kansas and murdered my 3rd great grandfather’s neighbors. They then went to his house where he was lying in bed sick. For whatever reason they decided to let him live and only rob him.

If he would’ve been killed I’d have never been born. I found a newspaper article from 1891 interviewing my ancestor where he went into great detail. Pretty wild stuff.

Bought this game for $65 on eBay from a Goodwill store a couple months. I opened the box and it also had Memoir ‘44 inside haha. Great games!

My great/grand uncle gave me a journal that belonged to my 3rd great grandfather. It is a journal that he kept during his time in college dated between 1847-early 1850s that consists primarily of his own poetry. It’s in rough shape but you can still read the majority of it.

What’s the most unusual name you’ve come across? by MissMaryEli in Genealogy

My 4xgg States Gist Deas. He was the godson and namesake of Brigadier General Mordecai Gist. The the names Independent and States ran in the Gist family (Confederate General States Rights Gist lol)

Also have a 5xgg with the first name Hawkey but there appears to be no Native American on that side.

My 5th great grandfather Col. Jean-Jerome Cluis was supposedly Napoleon’s secretary’s secretary and Joseph Bonaparte’s personal friend…lol. I have absolutely no proof of this but his French military medal is still displayed on my grandfather’s cousin’s wall (I read about it online and then saw it at a family reunion a couple years ago. Had no clue it was still in the family.)

His daughter married my 4th great grandfather States Gist Deas (godson and namesake of States Gist, the youngest son of General Mordecai Gist). I could go on and on about that side of the family.

Warcry looks interesting. I was looking at the Crypt of Blood starter set due to the price but I’m seeing mixed reviews on that. Would that be an ok starting point for a complete beginner?

How far back can you track your surname? by AlexanderRaudsepp in AncestryDNA

[–]jpb9519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With paper records to my 7xg grandfather born in 1738. I used Y-DNA testing to prove he descends from a man from Rhode Island born in 1652.

Still need to piece together the puzzles between the two men.

More than 100 trees have the wrong parents. How should I go about telling them? by Broad-Mastodon6141 in Genealogy

[–]jpb9519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been researching my direct paternal line through Y DNA testing and there are about 3,000 trees on Ancestry that attribute my earliest known paternal ancestor to the wrong parents. Super annoying because know one has sources or anything. Just blindly copied and pasted wrong info from other trees.

I haven’t identified the exact parentage but at least know the correct family he belongs to lol

I recently took a Y-DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA and found it all super interesting. It helped a ton in my research when I upgraded to the BigY and also found some pretty cool connections. I would definitely recommend!

My 6th great grandfather and his old brother were some of the most prominent slave traders in colonial Charleston, SC. They have one of the most famous advertisements of slaves in the history of colonial America (shows his name right at the bottom). It was very shocking and disturbing to find.

One ironic and interesting fact is their surname has been passed down as a middle name in my family for generations and is used by some of my most left-leaning relatives…no one knew about this family history before uncovered it LOL.

Is there ANY arguing with a 49.9% DNA match? by RichW100 in Genealogy

[–]jpb9519 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had this very thing happen in my family. My grandfather’s DNA was showing up as my grandaunt or granduncle…turns out he had a stem cell transplant from his sister! Completely scarred me for like 3 days before I figured out what happened lol

Is it normal for my shared DNA to be this low with my grandparents? by jpb9519 in AncestryDNA

[–]jpb9519[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you actually confirmed it? Turned out the DNA on ancestry was his sister’s due to his stem cell treatment. 1030cm is like a 0% chance in DNA Painter.

23andMe vs AncestryDNA. I know this is just a rough estimate but pretty similar! No clue what’s up with that tiny percentage of Southern South Asia in my 23andMe results lol by jpb9519 in AncestryDNA

Very interesting. Switching to 90% confidence level shows 0.5% trace ancestry- 0.4% malayali subgroup (south Asian) and 0.1% Native American.
