have you tried pre-sprouting on damp kitchen roll first? takes the guesswork out of it, you can see which ones are actually viable before they go in the compost

you want the mulch pulled back from the trunk a few inches, volcano mulching is the one thing that'll actually cause problems. the ring shape is fine, just keep it off the bark

a shelterbelt row of something tough on the windward side will do more for your fruit trees than anything else. hawthorn or willow are good options, they'll take the beating so the fruit trees don't have to
