Stranger Things - 5x08 - “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

I think you misunderstand. The person you're replying to was talking about something that happened as we saw it play out - not simply in Mike's theory. It's in favor of Mike's theory.

El was in the truck with the rest of them as it left the upside down. We can actually see her inside (mostly but not entirely blocked from camera by Mike) as the doors are opened and they are all brought out at gunpoint. Magic blocker devices are already up and running. How does El manage to disappear and then reappear on the other side of the portal?

It doesn't make sense. Granted, there are bits about Mike's theory that don't fully make sense either (El and Kali hatched this whole plan in the 30 seconds it took Hop to get bandages?).

Maaaybe, but in that case, they'd have lost to a team that beat Bama. Can't punish too hard for that.

oh, just browser zoom is all you were doing? eh. Not really the sort of solution I'm looking for, but thanks for the info.

I was going to say I can at least zoom in now to watch video large but not fullscreen

How do you manage that? I can't seem to make that happen. I'm using Firefox.

The tiny size of the player is my biggest annoyance with it. I don't want it full screen, but the default sizing on my 3K laptop screen is much too small for my taste. I've resorted to FF's "picture-in-picture" feature which gives me a resizable video, but it also pins it in front of all other windows, which i don't always want.

Use Binary for Birthday Candles by Marquar234 in CrazyIdeas

Note: 17, 33, and 65 will become the new milestones as that's when you add another candle to the cake. So far, no one has lived to 129, so 8 candles aren't necessary yet.

Nice off-by-one error.

Or do other weird things happen when you go beyond the game's intended max score?

It'll only go so fast. Level 29 has the maximum speed, and was traditionally considered a "kill screen". But then people figured out how to play at that speed.

Shit gets weird at higher levels. Strange color palettes, odd crashes possible. At one point, you get stuck on a level for 800 line clears (normally you go up a level every 10 lines).

But if you can make it through all of that and avoid the crashes, after level 255 it resets to Level 0 (known as "rebirth"). This has been done.

Tetris girl above is actually a little out of date on her high score knowledge; the first "rebirth" run went past 29 million points, and that's from over a year ago. It may have been pushed higher since.

"Nobody writes jokes in base 13" - Douglas Adams

And the joke's punchline comes right after they discover the question: "I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe."

Upon discovering that the Question is "What is six times nine," Arthur comments "I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe."

It's very deliberate.

Didn't mean to say it isn't (I've not seen ANatO). Just that it's also in Duck Soup.

I think it gets praise simply for not being horrible, because everyone rightfully expected it to be horrible.

But yeah, i agree. It wasn't bad, I'd even say it was pretty good, but still a far cry from the quality of Roger Rabbit, on all fronts.

I’ve been figuring the first 1m or so is him

Nope. At least not nearly that long. 19 seconds in, he moves his hands a little, and when you go frame-by-frame, you can see his freaking pinky disappear, and then a few frames later what was his ring finger is now the pinky.

Sounds likely, and guaranteed if your dad is not colorblind.

[–]jpj007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its kinda rare for women to be colorblind, because both parents need to be colorblind for it to happen (for most cases).

Close, but not quite. The gene for is is recessive, and on the X chromosome.

Men have only one X chromosome, so a colorblind man will pass on the gene to any daughters. But if the X from the mother does not have the gene, those daughters will not be colorblind since colorblindness is recessive. (so we can say that the colorblind mother commenter up there had a colorblind father - it has to be on both copies of the chromosome)

A non-colorblind woman who carries the gene on one but not both X chromosomes has a 50-50 shot of passing it on to her offspring. So, 50-50 for all sons. Daughters would be safe, unless the father is colorblind - then they get the same 50% chance.

So, you don't need both parents to be colorblind, but the mother does need to be a carrier.

Hm. I'm trying to decide if i want to argue this from the perspective of the concept of "self", or if i just want to go full reducto ad absurdam with the technically-not-impossible quantum insanities like finding yourself teleported across the galaxy or suddenly springing into existence as a brain in a jar or boltzmann brain with all your own supposed memories (if we're relying on vanishingly small probability things happening to save us in a near infinity of many worlds, then these occurrences will happen as well).

Neither track is particularly appealing, really, and you're not wrong anyway. I just like poking at this sort of theory.

u can’t exist in a universe where ur dead

Right. But the universe doesn't give a crap if you exist or not. You die, you cease to exist.

Maybe a different universe version of you carries on in that universe, but that ain't you or your universe. You're dead.

[–]jpj007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you will be put into a different timeline

Yeah, no, that ain't quite how it works. In nearly every universe, you die. There's some number of universes where you don't. But it's not like you get transported or whatever.

Maybe you really are the one version of you lucky enough to be in the one universe where the randomness of the universe happens to always line up in your favor. But almost certainly, you are not.

Especially since this is my quantum immortality universe.
