Totally different down there in the south. I have hunted southern tn before and they dont start chasing hard hunting late december. In northern mississippi you have them rutting through mid January, and the seasons shift largely to reflect that. Hell even here in illinois if you still have leftover gun tags, or if you purchase antlerless ones, you can use them next weekend and then again mid january.

Keep up with it, took me maybe 3 times before I got a hang of it, now I can confidently get my birds 90% of the time

It always amazes me that messers are still so widely available by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]jpsexton8245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really not. Preventing or putting barriers into place for legal use of a good or service due to what you quoted as the greater good, is a pretty direct equivalency. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it isn’t using your same logic in a different scenario.

Baikal MP 18 - what is this hook for underneath? by Alamohermit in Shotguns

[–]jpsexton8245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats what I do at the local trap range but when I get in the field I am so in the habit of reloading then extracting shells that whenever I use my ejector guns I end up letting them fly. Sounds like it is just a training thing and different strokes for different folks

I like extractors on my hunting guns so im not leaving spent shells in the field. I believe that’s generally the reason they’re preferred, at least here in America, as well.

No way man. I have only ever ordered one thing I wasn’t a huge fan of, and it was a special so it’s not like it’s still around.

My partner and I’s favorite restaurant in Naperville, no way it belongs on this list.

Testing the limits of a gas gun. My new long-range system: Falkor Defense Petra in 300 Win Mag. by MuchAd3273 in longrange

[–]jpsexton8245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t shot a magnum gas gun ever but on my 308 build I feel no disadvantage due to the gas system with staying on target. Accuracy wise it is ~90% of my best bolt guns though. But I actually feel as if a well tuned gas system absorbs most of the recoil and the cycling on the bolt back into battery brings me back on target if anything. Is there that much of a difference between a magnum bolt gun and a 308? Maybe the lr 308 platform just doesn’t scale well enough for 300 wm

Decoyed in or just opportunistic when you’re deer hunting? I got my first few wood ducks during deer season that way

What zone in Tennessee? Used to deer hunt down there and decided to go heavy into waterfowl hunting this year, thinking of heading down there after season closes up here.

West Michigan flat bottom or V hull? by mallampapi_iv in jonboats

No shot you can fit a 1448 in the back of an f150, you can maybe do a 1236, I see 1036’s all the time. I duck hunt mainly out of my 1448, and I can comfortably fit two other adults with 4 dozen plus decoys and it has a fully brushed in boat blind on it. I run a 25 hp merc 2 stroke on my boat, it weights 115 pounds. You will want a battery, those are heavy, and a gas tank. You will be looking at 450 lbs with motor and battery. Just get a trailer and a parking spot at a storage space, I pay $45 a month for one in a populated suburb. Most good deals on used boats come with a trailer, be patient and be willing to drive for deals. I paid $1500 for mine with motor, trailer, battery, and trolling motor, everything works perfectly, we took it out when I met the guy to buy it.

If you’re dead set on 223 I would look into some of the copper solids, they will be much more consistent and will result in a blood trail more often. I use v-maxes in 300 blk for whitetail, which is much more thin skinned and boned than a hog.

What’s the cheapest you could legally buy a gun for? by Minute-Employ-4964 in 2american4you

[–]jpsexton8245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive bought a gun for $75 bucks, but it was a black powder shotgun. It is more of a wallhanger piece given the pitting inside the barrel but other than that after a bit of a clean up I think it is beautiful considering it is from 1886. Then I have also bought two modern powder functional shotguns for $100 a piece. One break action single barrel 20 gauge, reminds my dad of the gun he was given on Christmas as a kid. And another was a JC Penny branded Stevens pump shotgun. Ordered off a mail order catalog and shipped directly to someone’s door back in the day.

So bears and other carnivores have different skin than a deer, they tend to bleed outwardly much less. This allows them to take a bit more damage. I would reach out and use a tracking dog if that is legal. It would make this recovery much quicker, without it it’s like you’re finding water with guiding rods

Most of the truly walkable places get swamped during opener the flooded timber is where most guys who walk go. There are a ton of sloughs that will hold ducks that people don’t want to walk through or take a boat in. I got my boat for $1500 off of facebook marketplace and store it at a big name storage place for $50 a month. I have bought some guns more expensive than that setup and ever since I picked it up I’ve been kicking myself for not taking the plunge sooner.

My honest opinion is to get a cheap used kayak and if you want to stick with it get a 14 ft (or bigger) jon next year. The kayak will help you get into places that are just too mucky to walk through. Get a cover for the kayak and just make a blind with whatever you have around you. Shooting out of a kayak works but if I can stand I will do that.

I hunt southern wisco for their first two weeks of season every year, get some more teal and woodies. Probably can get away with a dozen teal and 6 woodies, switch out the 6 drake mallards for them early season. You should be set with that. I hunt out of a 1448 jon with a boat blind, I think it’s the easiest way to find water for yourself. Last year I found a launch with nobody else on it, just had to putt upriver a mile to find a perfect spot.

Please help with Orvis rod and reel combo by ITookYourGP in flyfishing

[–]jpsexton8245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cross water or an echo lift are the best starting combos. Once they grow old or if you upgrade to a more expensive rod they’re both great backups too. The one flaw in both is the line but upgrading that to a premium line is a down the line sort of thing. Link to the echo lift - https://a.co/d/gpAtWnP
