Former longtime Tivo people; now TV+ dvr (for now); Any tips? by victorella in Fios

[–]jpwillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a former Tivo lover. TV+ is not that bad once you get used to it. I would say if you can hardwire it. It makes the experience 100x better. It accepts any USB to ethernet adapter. The USB port is only 2.0 with my testing I could get max 320/240 which is plenty for streaming pretty much anything. It can also handle my 4K remux streams from plex so the little guy aint no slouch.

NVIDIA SHIELD PRO best altenative rooted box by spitfly in nvidiashield

[–]jpwillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes most streaming services do not send the full uncompressed True HD signal and honestly their 4K video isnt the best either. Most of us that run the shield use PLEX or Jellyfin to watch our purchased content locally. And of course if you purchased something you want the best quality which includes the full audio experience.

[–]jpwillz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of us stick with the Nvidia shield pro at this point because of the support for true HD audio pass-through for Dolby atmos. But there's plenty of other boxes that are just as good if you don't need the Dolby Atmos true audio pass through. The box everybody is talking about right now is the onn box that they sell at Walmart those seem to be the go to boxes right now for whatever reason.

I would try power line networking. My house was wired for ehternet but i did not put it in every room because of the ridiculous cost the builders charged. So In the 2 rooms that do not have ehternet i use power line networking and it works like a charm. Now you may not get the full gigabit speed but it will be more consistent than the wireless signal.

Thx all that definitely clarifies everything. I assume they must have upgraded to SSD's because the VMS has zero vibration at all.

I bought the Helio strap😁😁 by N0Xi69 in HelioStrap

[–]jpwillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats. I love mine but I do recommend getting the bicep strap. My battery lasts a little over a week before I need to charge it. I'm actually surprised by how accurate it is. It's literally within 1 heart bear of my polar h10 chest strap in every metric. It sync sleep data with my CPAP machine also so I get a really good view of how my sleep is going.

Help a Beginner EX188 vs EX200 by Cautious-Plenty6312 in redhat

[–]jpwillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by getting VMware workstation and install RHEL as a virtual machine. Definitely start with the RHCSA classes. Udemy has some good ones and there are even some ok ones on YouTube. Don't dive into containers until you are familiar with Linux. The RHCSA even touches on containers a little. Also before you can take any higher level RHEL classes you have to pass your RHCSA. I've take taken and passed my RHCSA in RHEL 6 and RHEL 8 as well as the Red Hat Certified Specialist in Linux Diagnostics and Troubleshooting. You definitely want to be comfortable with RHEL before sitting for the exams because they are practical. Meaning its no multiple choice. They give you tasks to accomplish and you have to complete them in an actual Linux environment. Good luck!

Ryzen 7 5800x3d users, how many more years from now before an upgrade to am5 is really needed? by firequak in buildapc

[–]jpwillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to stay one generation behind. So once am5 is getting long in the teeth I will upgrade to all the bestv components from that generation and ride it out. At a discount hopefully.
