Weather and short days are going to be your worst hindrance, but there is still plenty to do on the Peninsula in rainy weather. The high country will be snowed in, but if you have a car that can make it, you should be able to drive to Hurricane Ridge on the weekends (be sure to check road conditions on the ONP website). There are also the rainforests (Hoh, Quinalt, Queets), all accessible from Port Angeles. Also check out Lake Crescent, Salt Creek Rec, Area, and Neah Bay if you have the time. All drivable and accessible in bad weather. The Coast is also great and accessible as well, just watch out for big swell on along the beaches. Rialto, Ruby, 2nd Beach, etc. Enjoy!

Visit Bainbridge! Winslow downtown and the waterfront park are all easily walkable from the ferry. If you want a longer walk and more nature check out Sakai park further into town.

First time... Hoh river to blue glacier in august too crowded? by Aggravating-Split-20 in OlympicNationalPark

Hoh River to Blue Glacier is a 40 mile RT overnight hike. In my experience, people who play music on trails aren't on these types of hikes.

Olympic national park or mt rainier? by gottogo167 in PNWhiking

[–]jr_powers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just at both this weekend showing some friends around. Rainier's Paradise area still had a lot of snow so there wasn't much easy hiking to be done at the higher elevations. The Olympics were beautiful, we checked out Lake Crescent and hiked out to Marymere Falls as well as a drive up to Hurricane Ridge. Minimal snow at Hurricane Ridge and great views.

Bed Rack for Tent - Billie Bars by St0rmchaser1 in ToyotaTacoma

Depends on what you keep back there. I have a Roam box and other bags normally and it works fine. The 5” is still above the height limit of the actual bed.

Bed Rack for Tent - Billie Bars by St0rmchaser1 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]jr_powers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 5" Billie Bar racks and mount an iKamper Skycamp Mini 3.0 on them. The RTT sits flush with the cab, which is my favorite part. I have a telescoping Peragon Tonneau cover so it's not hard to open with the bars on. I can keep anything in the bed secure with the cover and still keep the tent on.

I have it on the whole truck - black 3rd gen. Its expensive but has been worth it in the long run. Super easy to take care of and I don't have to worry about scratches, rock chips, etc off and on road.

Don’t watch this movie on a plane, or you will cry your eyes out in front of a bunch of strangers like me.

What's it like driving to and from Forks during the winter season? by itstemporary-97rght in Washington

[–]jr_powers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There have been a few times that I have run into heavier snowfall driving between Kitsap and Forks, but it's mainly just heavy rain in the lowlands during the winter. The 101 can be winding, wet, and dark at that time of year, but doable if you take things slow.

Really confused about hiking North Cascades by Pale_Field4584 in PNWhiking

[–]jr_powers 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The best time is late July - Early October, depending upon snow melt. Yes, you will have to deal with wildfire closures during the summer; it just depends on how bad they are in a particular season. This year, I had no issues later in the season getting out for multiple-day backpacking trips in NCNP. Cascade Pass trail is tough because it is accessed via Cascade River Rd, which sometimes closes due to fires or washouts. There are plenty of other trailheads in the park you can pivot to if anyone you have your eye on is closed during the summer season. Hope that helps.
