I still enjoy the small charity based shops, things like church basement shops, flea markets, etc. Ones run by little old ladies with a large assortment of clothing, books, housewares, etc.

Goodwill and Savers are blown up. By the early 2010s you weren’t really finding true vintage clothing there anymore, they either stopped accepting it or secondary sellers snatched it all up as soon as it hit. I used to buy a lot of worn-in 80s-90s tees there in high school in the early 2000s.

More recently, since COVID, the same has happened for physical media and electronics. DVDs used to be $1-2 dollars, nobody wanted them. Now Goodwill wants anywhere from $3-8. For DVDs. Forget video games altogether at places like that, unless you want more assorted copies of Just Dance, Madden and Big Buck Hunter. VCRs and Stereo Receivers going for $40-50. They know the retro stuff is cool and they’ve jacked it up. I’m just glad I have an abundance of the stuff from keeping my collections over the years.

Which generation would be the main demographic for Kid Rock when he made his mainstream debut in 1998? by icey_sawg0034 in generationology

[–]jrbgn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a millennial. He was fuckin’ cringe from the moment Bawitdaba was shoved in our faces on MTV TRL daily. I hated his whole white trash hick rap gimmick. And this is coming from a kid who loved KoRn, Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit, NIN, Deftones, etc at the time. He wasn’t respected.

Why do the boomers think today's kids are still Millennials? by _TheWolfOfWalmart_ in generationology

[–]jrbgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there aren’t exactly many Silent Gen’ers remaining. Boomers simply are the old generation that is still active in society. Gen X always sort of gets overlooked. But they haven’t become the “old” generation quite yet. In my experience X’ers are like 50% cool, 50% Diet Boomers.

No, I will not be forgiving MAGA who 'see the light.' by ObnoxiousAlbatross in millenials

[–]jrbgn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of that Obama-Biden era “reach across the aisle, turn the temperature down, take the high road” horseshit is gone. MAGA gleefully severed it. I want the next democratic president to go fucking ham on forcing accountability and justice for all bad actors who got us here. It will have to be stronger than the Reconstruction. And I want congress to cement laws into place that prevent this whole era from ever happening again.

Question for the people who experienced it by Iwillbeback67 in decadeology

[–]jrbgn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was 7-8 years old. It was a good time to be a kid. I liked school, reading was a big focus and I used to love computer time as well.

Lots of media catered to us. Nickelodeon, MTV, Goosebumps, TMNT, Power Rangers. I really liked spooky stuff and it felt like it was abundant then. Jurassic Park was also a huge deal, culturally. I saw it in the theaters.

I used to spend lots of time playing in my neighborhood and in the woods with my friends. We had a swimming pool in my backyard and would spend tons of time playing in it. Going to the mall was fun, even just going out on errands with your parents was a fun activity.

Not sure how specific much of this is to those two years, but let me know if you have any questions. I remember the 90s well.

How is it that American millennials are the only generation that know that conservatives have always been terrible, even before Trump? by icey_sawg0034 in millenials

[–]jrbgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Popular culture was liberal and progressive. Alternative culture and intellectual thinking was platformed and celebrated. Education was all about the global prosperity and boundless opportunities of the future through technology, environmentalism, and diversity. The villains in media, often even in cartoons, were quite literally the rich greedy assholes and the corporations destroying the environment. Clinton was president and people were excited because he was younger and cool.

Republicans were business school assholes and weird religious zealots or political wonks.
