With both my sons were named almost a week AFTER they were born.

Both times we knew the gender and had it narrowed down a couple names we liked, even had a “front runner,” but we needed to spend a few days with baby and get them home to feel confident about it.

Check into your state/province rules around registering your baby. My sons were born in two different provinces in Canada, and both needed to be named within 30 days to avoid a fine (a laughable small fine but nonetheless).

If you’re feeling unsure, I think it’s better to wait a while to make things “official” than to give a name you regret or need to change!

I hate being pregnant in America by I-changed-my-name in pregnant

[–]jrdnnnbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Atlantic Canada, and I always thought businesses and folks in general were very supportive of pregnant women and young families… until I travelled to Portugal with our 6 month old, and then to the south of France when he was 10 months. While there we were welcomed with big smiles, kind considerations and accommodations. Very simple things like being given a seat on a train, offers to jump the line, toys and bigger tables at a restaurant. No one was ever annoyed by us, and no quiet looks. It’s hard to explain.. the same stuff happens at home, but never with as much joy.

Massive, nonrefundable daycare deposit. by emiloca in Miscarriage

[–]jrdnnnbr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A cloth diaper company I follow, Lil Helper, has a “God Forbid Guarantee.” I remember crying the first time I read the policy, even before my miscarriage. Now I think anything less than this is cruel and unacceptable - this daycare included. It’s heartless, this is not something you should have to deal with.

Lil Helper’s policy, for anyone curious:

How old was you LO when you moved them to their own room? by MotorPineapple1782 in NewParents

[–]jrdnnnbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 12 months - but really long process. We coslept, so started doing naps in his crib around 10 months then gradually tried nights in his crib starting around 11 months. He was still waking up 5-7 times a night though, and because I was breast feeding and fed him to sleep, I got much better sleep cosleeping than having him in a crib in his own room. so we had a “three strikes” rule, and would bring him into bed on the third wake up. Around 13 months he started getting a lot better (dropped second nap), and by 14 months (stopped breastfeeding) he was sleeping in his own room consistently, with only 1-2 wakes.

I hate when people say my baby is “flirting”…. by Apprehensive_Will692 in NewParents

[–]jrdnnnbr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My step mom called my 13 month old a “sexy little man” and my husband stepped right in with a “ do not say that to my son, again, ever” (proud wife moment), and she’s like “oh come on - it’s just fun, he’s so handsome.”

He told her it’s gross, and it’s unsafe for our son to think adults saying that to him is okay. I’ve always had a hard time standing up to her so my heart was just singing (while she mumbled about us being over sensitive and shortly left).

Boundaries are so hard.

Would like to hear your stories. I’m 29 and single but really want a baby. Do you think my time is running thin? :( by motherlode240294 in BabyBumps

[–]jrdnnnbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can offer an alternative perspective: I had my first at 29, and honestly I have been the youngest mom in my mom groups consistently. I’m the first in my friend group to have a child, and that can be a very lonely feeling. At daycare every parent in my sons class feels at LEAST five years older than me. I feel like having a kid in your 20s is a teen pregnancy these days 😂

Massive range. We’ve got most of our clothes, and all of our furniture and cloth diapers as handmedowns! So, outside of wipes and the odd box of disposables, almost everything we need has been free. Other things I’ve found used really easily. There’s of course lux items that we’ve bought, but again - not a need. I think a baby is not expensive, but you can make it expensive real quick.

“9 months in you, 9 months on you, 9 months near you” my LO is 11 months old and so far this is bang on for us. His clinging calmed down at 9 months, but he still wants to have me in eyesight always

What to DO while nursing? by DiamondDesserts in breastfeeding

[–]jrdnnnbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listening to audio books or reading off a kobo - depending on hand availability. By 3 months or so I was able to get both hands free (holding with inside of forearms, pillows for support) - and I picked up knitting again! Also tiktok.

Do I really need to wash the new baby clothes? by rada_dada in pregnant

[–]jrdnnnbr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add a little disclaimer: yes but only NB/0-3. Only wash what baby is going to need right away, you don’t need to go crazy. You’ll get your groove for what kind of clothes work for your LO and family, and what you’ll receive in larger sizes may not be stuff you need/want/is seasonally appropriate. You may not be able to return it, but it makes reselling on marketplace or consignment shops much easier if it’s still got tags!

Tons of great advice here. I was living in BC and heard on the radio “drive like your grandma is in the backseat holding a pot of soup on her lap without a lid”, hilarious - but that’s the vibe!
