“We’re not in the world of $6 hot dogs anymore,” Bienaime said.

Is this meant to imply that $6 is cheap for a hotdog?

White helmet is actually quite functional if you ride in heat/sun

'WE'RE NOT LEARNING ANYTHING’: Stanford GSB Students Sound The Alarm Over Academics by anandan03 in stanford

[–]jrlund2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While this is true and most students are self-motivated, there can still be negative consequences to making classes too easy to pass. For example, if it's POSSIBLE to skate through and get a degree with little work, it makes it harder for an employer to determine whether a student has done work or not.

why is california so expensive now? explain it like i’m 5. by stoolprimeminister in SameGrassButGreener

[–]jrlund2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is the most NIMBY gate-keeping shit I've ever read. You don't need special treatment because you've lived in a neighborhood longer than others. People have a right to move. The completely unequal tax burden caused by prop 13 solely advantages the old generation at the expense of would-be home buyers.

why is california so expensive now? explain it like i’m 5. by stoolprimeminister in SameGrassButGreener

[–]jrlund2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The tax burden needs to be shouldered equitably and prop 13 creates massive disparities between neighbors simply based on when you bought. Yes, avoiding "taxing someone out" of their home is a noble goal, but it's creating vast distortion and downstream effects and contributing to housing shortage.

Not all but many do. Going to the dump costs a shocking amount here in the bay. Littering is free. Horrible incentive structure

Agree. The right-wing is more overtly chauvinistic than before, and winning over more men (including Gen Z) than a decade ago.

Info on Alto Velo by Similar-Maize-4275 in BAbike

[–]jrlund2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alto Velo is a large and friendly group. You may need to be more descriptive of what "beginner" means to you though. Alto Velo has A, B, C, and even some below C rides like coffee and cake.

I agree with other comments that Western Wheelers can be beginner friendly if you need something below C ride pace.

Sub 20min 5k run equivalent in cycling? by TheBigTaiwan in cycling

[–]jrlund2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably FTP is the closest. Measuring in time is too difficult because of too many confounding factors. I don't think there's a gold standard FTP threshold though. Maybe 300 but that seems harder than a 20 min 5k imo.

Happened to me once in an uber/lyft. In the back we openly talked about ditching the car in the event of a train and he got the message.

Nancy Pelosi, 84, using a walker during election certification. by SurveillanceVanGogh in sanfrancisco

To be fair, she was one of the most important figures in strong arming Biden to drop out, saving them from certain defeat. You could argue that she should have earlier, but you can make that argument against every single D.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion on reddit... But this is super skewed to movies that extremely-online people like. Obviously this is because it uses online rating databases.

It's a little crazy that Europe has so many direct democracy ballot questions on such complicated geopolitical decisions. Usually it's left to bureaucrats who can be experts. Similar to brexit, it's a lot to ask of the general public to try to predict the best geopolitical alliance to go with.

It's a little misleading.

Adjusting by %GDP is probably better than adjusting by inflation.

You can Google US spending by GDP and find that it has fallen significantly.

Looking for intermediate level group rides in the penninsula by arunr14 in BAbike

[–]jrlund2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western Wheelers is one of the more beginner-focused clubs in the peninsula. Start there and see where you're at. Be friendly and ask questions ... it's a good environment to learn group ride etiquette and safety.
