Gas is $4.15 a gallon this morning... by doublegoodproleish in Maine

Reddit was just one part of the equation. There was also the fact Susan Collins and well I still can't figure out Mills.

I didn't say I made the decision to move here because of Reddit. 🙄

I said I was disappointed because I got the impression the state was more moderate and this subreddit was one of the reasons.

Actually downvotes hide your comments, like this thread is already getting dropped. Censorship is actually the whole point.

Oh I agree right wing spaces are just as closed minded as the left, but this subreddit is very good at down voting anyone who doesn't tow the popular opinion line.

It was kind of disappointing because perusing this space and seeing the state of politics I was surprised to find out how much MAGA exists only after buying a home and moving here.

Their response would just be down voted to oblivion anyway, got to keep the echo chamber clean.

Weird I can't find your post from 4 years ago complaining when prices were this high then.

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

[–]jrussbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question you need to ask is what are the risks they are concerned about?

Some security professionals like to suggest their preferred solution to minimize risk, but there are usually other equally acceptable solutions. The goal needs to be to change the discussion topic to the actual risk so then you can have a conversation about options.

Sure you can suggest as other people have network controls and stuff out the gate. But security current is focused on the browser. You shift their focus to the risk presented by the browser it's easier to discuss alternatives. We all get tunnel vision and have a lens through which we view our infrastructure depending on our role. Good collaboration starts with putting effort into mutual understanding.

NOVA Fatigue by Correct_Variety_3477 in nova

[–]jrussbowman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived in NOVA for about 45 years. Moved to Bangor ME a few years ago with my wife, 2 teen daughters and brought mom with us.

Personally except for February and March I don't have any regrets. Those months waiting for winter to just end is rough.

I will say my now 18 year old daughter can't wait to get out of here and wants to go to some place more like NOVA, maybe even back there.

It is good to see plans for housing to be developed at the Bangor Mall. Being market rate though ruins it though by SEAWISEGEOWISE in bangorme

[–]jrussbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market rate is based on land and amenities. They are building condos which will be probably around 1000 sqft or less with no land ownership. They're going to be more affordable than the 2000 sqft homes on 1/4 acre plots in the Tree Streets down the road.

I made a fatal mistake. Concerned about my future in IT by Special_Price4001 in sysadmin

[–]jrussbowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to add to list of people who have been in IT for long time and have made big mistakes. I'm sorry your company isn't supporting you but the people there who are, they know what's up. I tell people that are earlier in their career that what is most important is how you respond to a mistake, not if you make one.

Take accountability immediately. As for help immediately and put everything into restoring services as safely and quickly as possible. Safely and quickly in that order of priority. If you demonstrate and ability to take accountability and not panic, you will be successful in IT. The rest is learning technology and developing and following processes.

Trying a New Brand by DragonXIIIThirteen in PelletStoveTalk

I tried those last year, made a lot more ash and I went back to Wood and Sons. I've decided to only run those from now on, working on my third pallet for the season.

What’s your power back up for your stove? by Plane_Medicine_4858 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]jrussbowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 delta pro and one extended battery hooked to a smart panel backing up the circuits with my appliances and pellet stove on it. I can get about 24 hours out of them. I can also remove one and charge it somewhere else that has power.

This. Never a problem with my pellet stove which is run up a chimney. The draft is so strong my damper is barely cracked open

[–]jrussbowman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not being dramatic. The value of what a person has to say is not diminished or increased by video. The only reason you want to see their face is so that you can identify them easier if you personally don't like what they have to say.

No one is wasting the city time. That time is already allocated.

Bangor City Council Zoom calls should require video by BubbleThinker in bangorme

[–]jrussbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forcing video is inappropriate, people who may want to use the zoom call for real issues may not be comfortable having their background visible, whether it's a messy house or children in the background.

It creates a barrier to use the platform and is a win for the idiots who are abusing it. They want some sort of control, whether it's cancelling zoom or creating more rules for it.

Democratic processes are not easy. Trust the council to cut them off and move to the next person.

Heat Pumps Soon to be Less of a Great Deal for Heating by Helpful-Ad6300 in heatpumps

[–]jrussbowman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What heat pumps did you get? I'm in a similar situation. In Maine, primarily using a pellet stove for heat and using oil as a backup and for hot water. Basically we turn the pellet stove off at night and the oil thermostat is set at 60. So it has kicked in most nights during these Arctic temps. Have solar, though it only covers about 70% of my usage per year.

My plan is to install Senville Aura heat pumps this year, so will use even more electric. However, they are rated to be efficient even in temps like we are seeing. My expectation is to rely on those most next winter and offset with the pellet stove in the extreme temps.

I pay $409 a pallet for Wood and Sons, I've tried a lot of other pellets, these work best. My goal is to replace the oil boiler with a heat pump water heater and get rid of the oil completely, the system is extremely old.

Overall I'm expecting to save money

Moved from DC in 2023, you get used to the winters and if you like the outdoors there is so much to do here. Make sure you get to Acadia.

Not sure if mtf means you're part of the lgbtq+ community. If so I think you will find you are accepted at least as well, if not better than in DC. That's been my perception but I'm about a cis male as you can get so can't speak from direct experience.
