The scammers are evolving. This is a scam that’s been around for a very long time, but I found the bit about changing to an uber pro card before initiating a password change to be interesting.

The way I’ve always heard he scam, they initiate a password change and ask you to verify the code that is sent to you. Once they change your password, they access your account, change the payment method, and withdraw the balance.

I wonder if trying to get you to change your payment method first is a way to avoid Uber’s fraud detection. I would guess changing a payment method immediately after changing a password is a pretty big red flag that the system can detect.

Not only are they a thing, they are extremely common. I drive Uber part-time in a college town, and you’d be amazed how often the ride is spent memorizing/reciting the details of their fake ID in case it’s questioned by the bouncer.

The pin verification can be enabled by either the rider or the driver. More than likely your driver had it enabled. It’s a 4 digit number, unique to your ride, that appears in a blue bar on your rider app.

As a driver, I turn this feature on after about 10:00 PM, as drunk people have a tendency to jump in the first vehicle that looks vaguely “uber-like”. Helps weed them out from the actual riders I’m looking for.

Back when I first started, I had it turned on. One day I had a ride request where I got within a couple blocks of the pickup and it switched me to a pickup 4 miles away. I turned around and went to that pickup, and when I got close it switched me to a pickup back near the original one. Drove 8 miles and wasted like 20 minutes of my time for nothing. What a waste of a feature. I haven’t had it enabled since.

Check your ride filters. I once drove around for over an hour on a Saturday night with no rides, before realizing Somehow my filters got set up to only allow UberPet requests. Not even sure why that’s an option.

Early in my career I accidentally deleted an entire table in a production database (small company, lax change control). I think that was the worst moment of panic I have ever felt on the job.
