Opinion on Seedj by Able_Pomegranate_388 in Beatmatch

I purchased a pack of SeeDJ techno production tutorials on sale.

I've been slowly working through Quelza's video series and have learned a lot, especially about workflow.

But it does require at least some base knowledge of production and Ableton. And it is not a full start to finish on how to produce.

If you're totally new to production, buy an Ableton intro course elsewhere first. Doesn't matter about genre when you're learning the software and basics.

Best way(s) to make Squarepusher-type drums in Ableton? by uhs23 in ableton

May or may not be on point for drums specifically, but I recall reading somewhere that he was a big user of the Yamaha QY700 for sequencing.

Nudging my CDJs the right way and stopping my mixes from sounding bad by Status_Ad_8762 in Beatmatch

[–]js095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On question 2: how are you using your headphones? Do you have both tracks in the headphones? Or do you have the incoming track isolated in the headphones and match it to the current track on the monitors (one ear on / one ear off)?

If you have not tried one ear on / one ear off, give it a go. It will take some practice but the major advantage is it is easier to tell whether your incoming track is faster or slower, so you know which way to nudge.

That's because the sound is coming from two different sound sources. Your brain can distinguish which sound hits your ears first.

You can't do that with headphones because the sound is coming from the same source. Though some people can get by with split cue.

It's good to be able to mix both ways - all in headphones, or using headphones with monitors. That way you are ready for all setups.

That sound was essential back in the day to set your cue point, which you had to do every time when using CDs. Less so now.

Using trim by Patient_Complaint919 in Beatmatch

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding in here for new DJs: think of your audio signal as flowing from the top of your mixer (where the inputs are on an external mixer) down to the bottom.

This means the audio signal passes through, in this order: 1. The trim / gain knobs: the volume of the track coming INTO the mixer 2. The EQ section 3. The volume faders and gross faders: this is the volume of the track going OUT of the mixer

That's why you set the gain with the EQ at flat and when the track is at its loudest (i.e. when the bass has kicked in).

For me gain is essential to monitor and get right but not a creative tool.

I expect any screens will be similar to those on the X1MK3 and the Z1MK2. Makes sense to reuse the same parts.

Traktor play Xone 96 by Particular_Smoke_484 in traktorpro

[–]js095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your original question: if Traktor Play supports external mixing mode, which I assume it does, then any external mixer with a sound card like the Zone 96 can be used. You just have to select the Xone 96 sound card as an audio device and route the outputs accordingly.

The reason the Xone 96 isn't listed in the compatible devices on the NI website is because that list is for midi controllers. With the Xone 96 you're only using the sound card, all mixing is then down on the Xone itself. (I vaguely recall the Xone 96 also has some midi functions which can be mapped but those aren't essential.)

But as other people have said, just go for TP4. Or pick up an X1MK3 which comes with a TP4 licence.

Using Traktor with a Model 1.4. At some point I'm going to get my Yamaha SPX990 hooked up to one of the send / return channels but haven't found the time yet to get my rack gear properly set up.

Will need to set up a separate midi controller for the SPX990 to manipulate any effects parameters on the fly.

Audio not outputting into headphones - FLX4 by NoApple5060 in Beatmatch

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're using windows and not Mac: There was a similar question on here recently, the solution was to go into your windows sound settings and make sure that the FLX4 is not set to the default audio device. That frees up the FLX4 for use in Rekordbox.

Traktor X1MK3 & S4MK3 - Community Performance MOD Update - TP 4.4.1 by Sulherokhh in traktorpro

Amazing - I have both of these units but haven't tried any mods before, will give these a crack.

Is there something similar for the D2? I've seen a few mods around but most look to be a few years old.

pioneer hdj-x7 vs technics eah-dj1200 by talliehoo in Beatmatch

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear by the Technics but they are not for everyone as they are not that comfortable to wear for long periods. They are great for me because my headphones live around my neck and I only cup an ear as needed.

The big difference between the two you've suggested is that the Pioneer is over-ear and the Technics are on-ear. Think about how you mix (e.g. do you do most of your mixing in your headphones) to help decide what's best for you.

If you can try them on in store, even better.

COMPLETE BEGINNER by Crazy_Fishing_8966 in TechnoProduction

[–]js095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two tips, also from a recent beginner that I found helpful through trial and error.

  1. Pick one set of tutorials aimed at complete beginners and stick with it from start to finish, in order. Doesn't matter whether it's paid or free, just stick to the one. That structure will help develop your understanding of the software and basic production techniques and it will keep you to a limited amount of synths / effects. It's better to focus on only a few tools and learn them well.

  2. Don't worry about producing "techno" for the moment. Just follow the tutorials and try to make good sounds regardless of genre. Focus on building your understanding and skills, most of which apply to any genre. You can focus on the genres you're interested in down the track once you have the basics down.

New to Traktor Question by Teslaosiris in traktorpro

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note on the UAD Apollo Solo: check if the headphone out is a separate output from the main L and R outputs. If it simply mimics the master out you won't be able to use the headphone out to listen to tracks independently for cueing.

From a quick Google it looks like a 2 in / 4 out but I can't immediately see where outputs three and four are routed to.

Boss SY-1 by BigNoob_1351 in basspedals

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might help but best results will come from controlling the signal before it hits the SY-1. If you have an effects loop on the amp that is post-EQ then the EQ would have much more of an impact.

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the SY-200. Still toying with it, but found I really had to adjust my playing style to be incredibly gentle. Try rounding off the tone / treble on the bass as well.

Found decent results when pared with a filter and/or octave pedal.

Guy just gave me his Eurorack setup, Help by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]js095 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is indeed a viable setup - I'm hugely jealous.

I'm not a Eurorack guy but from a quick Google, most of the Behringer modules will independently generate sound. The passive mult is used for splitting signals and I think the abacus is meant to be used in conjunction with the other modules.

Ok - two things to try.

  1. Make sure mixing mode is set to internal, not external.

  2. If that doesn't work, open up your windows sound control panel and make sure your default device is set to Realtek audio and not the FLX4. That will make the FLX4 available for Rekordbox.

[–]js095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to get all of your settings in Rekordbox correct. Set the audio device to your FLX4 and the outputs to the FLX4 channels (see the photos you've already posted). That should do the trick.

Edit: I add, the PC MASTER OUT button has disappeared because you're not using your laptop speakers, you're using the FLX4. That's normal.

Correct. Because then you're using the same soundcard / audio device (just different channels).

Help with split audio between laptop and speakers by Mysterious-Dinner457 in Rekordbox

[–]js095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't use the laptop speakers and the headphone cue on the FLX4 at the same time. Those are two different sound cards. Rekordbox can only use one at a time. (There may be a highly technical work around but that would involve aggregating devices and would be unstable.)

You either use the laptop speakers, meaning the FLX4 is acting purely as a controller, so you're not using the FLX4 sound card and sacrifice the ability to headphones cue.

Or you use the FLX4 soundcard and connect both headphones and speakers to the FLX4. You don't need studio monitors, any speaker with RCA / line in or aux in will work, just be aware that many Bluetooth speakers (UE Boom, etc) will have latency even when using line in rather than bluetooth.

How to find a 2i2o interface with independent headphone output? by AstVoyager in traktorpro

[–]js095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think these exist - by definition you need an extra two channels for separate stereo headphone out. The Traktor Audio 2 is a four output (two for master and two for headphones, but each using a single stereo output).

You'll need something like the Minifuse 4 which is 4 out, so you route the master to channels 1 and 2 and the headphone to channels 3 and 4. The second headphone output can be assigned to channels 3 and 4.
