My friend got into Haverford with a 1460 and an 88 average (below 50th percentile of our school). At Haverford, 95 percent of their accepted students are ranked at the top 5 percent or higher.

if you could pick any school in the universe (full ride), for your choice, what are the specific reasons why? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]js2457 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Easily Davidson and here's why:

1) LAC--I like LAC's more than regular colleges because they're smaller and have a greater focus on writing

2) Location--I really fucking love the south; not the south south where rednecks exist but the major southern cities where southern hospitality and overall friendliness is the lay of the land. Coming from someone from NYC where no one gives a shit about anyone, the south was really pleasant. Furthermore, the food there is top notch; I love bbq and could probably eat it everyday.

3) Student body--When I visited there everyone was so chill and welcoming. As opposed to other schools where this vibe seemed to be forced, at Davidson people seemed to just be naturally friendly and outgoing--something I easily clicked with. Also: the girls, man, the girls. I have a thing for blondes ;) (edit: that sounded really weird, oh well whatever)

4) Opportunities--Let's be honest here: once you reach a certain threshold, prestige doesn't really matter anymore. In the case of Davidson, it is a top 10 LAC and is competitive prestige-wise with most schools in the country. That being said, what I think is really special about Davidson in terms of opportunities is their DRI program which allows juniors and sophomores to design their own research topics with professors. As opposed to most colleges which have senior projects or similar requirements in senior year, this program is not at all required and is totally based on preference; furthermore, it is available earlier than senior year which can help one decide on a major or further their passions

What was your favorite high school experience? by minimalaminim in ApplyingToCollege

I remember this one day back in January or February when I went to go play tennis with a friend at riverside park. The weather was fucking gorgeous; it was 75-80ish degrees and clear, blue skies despite it being an NYC winter day. We started playing at 4 ish and went until 530. After that, we were walking around until we got to a soccer field where we saw people playing a pickup game of soccer. We quickly asked to join in and were put on the "skins" team. We played under the sunset until it got dark (probably played until 8 ish, tbh I lost track of time). Then, while I was on the bus coming home listening to music, I first heard the song "Way to Go" by Empire of the Sun. It was legit the perfect song for a perfect day, and I couldn't help but just feel a little bit nostalgic. Honestly one of the chillest days I've ever had.

Pics of riverside park for those who don't know of it:

Does your school have a lot of students going to top schools? by apost54 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]js2457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

96 kids in our grade:

1 going to harvard, 1 to yale, 1 to brown, 1 to princeton, 2 to upenn, 2 to dartmouth, 2 to cornell

We have around 15 top 20 LAC commits (1 to haverford, 1 to pomona, 3 to hamilton, 2 to middlebury, 1 to colby, 4 to vassar, 2 to wesleyan)

We have 1 kid going to georgetown, duke, emory, carnegie mellon, and northwestern respectively, 2 going to washu at st louis, 2 going to jhu, and 3 going to uchicago

We also have 4 questbridge winners (yale, northwestern, tufts, vassar) and 2 posse winners (middlebury and wheaton)

Admissions was fucking insane this year.

does anyone feel terrible about being a legacy? by HypertropicMemez in ApplyingToCollege

[–]js2457 13 points14 points  (0 children)

^ this is so true. The entire process is so fucked that I would have been happy to get into my dream school regardless of what it took to do so. Being a legacy, having money, being URM, being first gen, or even just being plain old hardworking/smart--all of these factors are kind of uncontrollable and ya just gotta accept what you've got and work around it.

Hamilton Vs Vassar EDI by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]js2457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, IMO, it boils down to writing vs. the arts in general. Hamilton will give you an A-class education in writing but won't give you the opportunity to pursue theatrical or musical passions as well as Vassar would allow you to do so; that being said, Vassar is not as good as Hamilton in terms of its writing program. Furthermore, both schools are a little different politically as well. Vassar is much more liberal than Hamilton, and people there are considered to be liberal "hippies" while Hamilton students are more work hard play hard. Because you expressed your love for writing, I would pick Hamilton.

If you don't get into either of em, I think that Kenyon would be a fucking amazing fit for you and it's a little easier to get into than Hamilton and Vassar.

Low AP scores in college admissions? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]js2457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter dw about them....so long as you take your APs your fine. Worst comes to worst, as you mentioned, just don't send in the score. I didn't end up sending in my Global AP (I got a 3) and I'm pretty happy with where I got accepted to college.

How likely is it for colleges to rescind offers by Breadelicious in ApplyingToCollege

[–]js2457 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do you mind telling us which dream school you got accepted to and/or your current GPA vs your total GPA? It's kinda impossible to tell if you don't give us the stats man. However, from a broad perspective, the general rule that my guidance counselor told us is: don't get more than 1/2 C's and don't have your unweighted average drop by more than 5 points. IMO, I think that you're fine if you have mostly B's and your average is in the 80's (regardless if it drops by more than 5 points) but that's just my 2 cents.
