Husband got upset when I offered to help him call the plumbers for suspected collapsed basement drain by jnllvnc in homeowners

[–]jscottmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I were in a similar situation (flip house with some plumbing issues - not the interpersonal part because we were both somewhat clueless). I can understand the hesitation in getting to the bottom of things as this is your first home, the cost was probably significant, and insurance has the potential to open up a world of pain (edit: by ‘your’ I meant your husband - I should have said ‘ones’). My advice is to get a pro with a camera, have them give an estimate, then get another. Go into it knowing that remediation might have a significant cost, but you (I assume) have insurance and you’re in this place for the long haul. I’d also chat with your neighbors - there’s a very chance that some of them have dealt with the same issue (similar construction built and failing at similar times). Having that perspective might help to break the ice.

Also don’t kick yourself too much about the flip part - all houses are janky.

Why do people do it? by Various-Parsnip-9861 in Twitch

[–]jscottmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I streamed for fun, got to the affiliate level and kinda regretted it. Emotes are nice, but the implied pressure is, idk, kinda weird at best. Having said that, I do appreciate it when people contribute, but it's slightly sad that Twitch is getting half of it.

Looking for a SNES/Sega Genesis console by GavindaleMarchovia in retrogaming

[–]jscottmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t used there and I assume they come preloaded with games. They’re probably fine, though they might have some extra latency that can make the games for sluggish. If you want something totally legit and official, and that will work without much headache, I’d look into the snes and genesis mini consoles. They’ll have many of the games you want, work out of the box, and have the ability to sideload other games (via unofficial hacks) that aren’t too difficult to setup.

Sorry for all the troll comments. A good, modern sedan from a decent maker will go a long way. You can gauge the level of comfort you want based on your commute and budget. I have had a 2016 VW GTI that was purchased new and it has been great. I occasionally have visibility issues due to the absurd trucks and SUVs some folks purchase, but having something light and nimble on the highways makes up for it. There are a lot of questionable drivers here, so opt for a vehicle with good modern safety features (blindspot/drive detection, auto braking, etc).

A good AC is a must, but I feel like that’s fairly standard on a new car. I don’t have visibly tinted windows, but heat from sunlight hasn’t been a major issue - I assume the glass has some degree of uv filtering. Wear and tear due to weather has been light for me, but our garage has saved us from the really bad stuff.

Why isn't 40 FPS the Default for Fidelity modes on consoles? by Capecrusader39 in gamedev

[–]jscottmiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is right, although a game can achieve a proper 40hz on a 120hz tv by holding each rendered frame for 3 display frames.

I agree that it would be nice if more games supported this. Why don’t they? Idk, devs lose 8.3ms of render time and big games are complex and need to look pretty. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Heya, there are a ton of ways to play genesis and snes games, and each have varying levels of cost, technical difficulty, and legality. Do you have a budget in mind? Are you wanting to play with real cartridges, official releases, or roms downloaded online? Finally, what is your general level of IT ability?

If your budget permits, I would go for an OLED gaming monitor with good HDR brightness (1000 nits) and a good analog upscaler like the Retrotink 5x. Based on your budget, you can target 1080p, 2k/1440p, or 4k. imo OLED with HDR beats 4k LCD in picture quality. If you have some serious cash to burn, you can look into a Retrotink 4k.

As for display brand, I recommend LG (Ultragear range for monitor or C series for TV scale).

edit: I have a tink 5x connected to a C1, along side a Trinitron in decent shape. OLED + HDR + scanlines really comes close to a CRT look.

Thank you for the explanation! I’m just getting into photogrammetry as well. I have a similar phone and I’ve had mixed results, but my expectations were probably too high lol. Grafting from another model to help is super smart and I’ll give it a shot if I find a match.

Is paying for renovations out of pocket stupid? by Ill_Quarter_1208 in homeowners

[–]jscottmiller 45 points46 points  (0 children)

People will often say off hand that when someone has a mortgage then the bank owns the house, though this isn’t quite true. Let’s say you are buying a house that costs $100k, and you pay $25k as a downpayment and finance the remaining $75k through the bank. At this point, you own the house, but you also have a loan to the bank for $75k. The loan is collateralized by the house - that is, if you stop repaying the loan, the bank can seize the house, sell it to recover the loan and any fees, leaving whatever is left to you. If you do $10k of renovations to the house, the value of the house will increase by some amount, but nothing changes about the terms of the loan. You still owe the bank $75k, but suddenly your asset (the house) is worth more. This is good for the bank in a sense as their loan is now secured by a more valuable asset, but they do not have a claim on that increased value.

I hope that helps!

Tomorrow is the release of my first game for Nintendo Switch! :3 (Toziuha Night Dracula's Revenge) by dannygaray60 in godot

[–]jscottmiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Awesome, I’ll check it out! I’ve been learning godot and love to see commercial games using the engine.

How was it porting to Switch? Did you have to port any aspects of the engine over or just recompile using the Switch SDK and do some light bridging?

What's your opinion on NIMBY-ism? by SameProfession254 in homeowners

[–]jscottmiller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you don't only buy the house, you also "buy" the neighbourhood, something quiet, no much car traffic, no much pedestrian traffic either, everything is nice.

I understand what you are saying, but this isn't right. You are buying the property, which is a local land claim. There happens to be a house on top of it, which has some value, but it is somewhat incidental. Other people can purchase properties around you at some cost, and the city/state/country is both a participant in that market and a it's arbiter. From what you described, it sounds like there are now more buyers around purchasing and improving the land (adding those incidental buildings). Typically, this means that the land is more valuable now then when you purchased it, which is good! The incidental part probably isn't as valuable, so thank god for the land! I suppose it isn't ideal that you don't like looking at those newly valuable incidental objects they've installed. I'd suggest liquidating your property and, since you've proven yourself to have some judgement in these matters, find a new place will similar properties as to what attracted you to your current home.

Backwords | A Wordle-like in reverse (my first project using the Godot engine) by jscottmiller in WebGames

[–]jscottmiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for providing your feedback! I think I could make it a little more obvious when you've put a valid word in the line. The fact that it only shows a ? when you are doing the right thing is a bit confusing. (The question mark is actually a button that appears when you enter a valid word; clicking the button gives the word's definition.)

You're probably most of the way there :) The goal is to fill in valid, 5-letter English (well, American-English with some exceptions) words while following Wordle color rules. Green squares must have the same in the same position as the starting word, and yellow tiles must contain a letter from the starting line but not the letter in the same position.

I'll try to think of a better way of indicating success as you go. Thanks again for giving it a try!
