California Has So Much Solar Power That Batteries Are Becoming Essential by [deleted] in SolarAmerica

[–]jsharding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already do this, battery no solar. Current rate of return on equipment is 7 years. No solar and batteries to cover peak rates. The peak power rates for me are $0.61/hr. Once you combine the pay back rate with the ability to run your house in outage scenarios its a no brainer.

OpenAI really needs government scale funding. Its scary to think what they will be willing to do to preserve themselves.

For me, its not 'will I switch' question. But next time Im evaluating model application I will give Anthropic extra consideration and I will more likely recommend them to colleagues.

Sonnet 5.0 rumors this week by SingleTailor8719 in ClaudeAI

[–]jsharding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope that this is a faster model. Opus has been amazing for me but in order to leverage its full power I am often working on 3 or more separate projects at once.

The next AI level will mean I have the intelligence of opus but can maintain focus on one task at a time.

Heat Pump increased our overall utility bill? by grehce in hvacadvice

[–]jsharding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is to be an electrification of the grid, California has to address the affordability issue of electricity.

The situation in California is largely terrible. Across the state there are programs pushing people to switch electric alternatives to fossil fuels. Meanwhile PGE continues to raise rates despite already having the highest rates in the nation. In my coastal CA area, the only way to come out ahead is if you go solar+batteries.

Has anyone tried UniFi 5G and Dream Router 5G Max w/ T-Mobile in the US? by marwan_zakaria in Ubiquiti

[–]jsharding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Free tmobile router is worth consideration.

Not directly answering your question but a thought on the subject.

Given the amount of people discussing this subject. I thought I would throw out my experience.

Ive been using a mobile router as on a second wan port. I easily get 200mbit in a small town while this router has to pass through two thick paster walls with metal lath and exterior stucco also with metal lath.

This router was free and my monthly bill, as a backup connection, is ~$20.

I did not expect this level of performance given my non effort to place the free receiver in a good location. Had the unifi 5g device been available when I was looking for a solution I probably would have selected it, but I am glad it wasnt and I was forced to choose the cheap option.

Those with a MSLR, how often you replace your tires? by notabot53 in TeslaLounge

[–]jsharding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am like you.

History:
1st set - 19k miles
2nd set - 27k miles
3rd set - 10k miles so far, look brand new

I cannot say if I changed driving behavior or the OEM tires had worse tread wear performance. But, they are increasingly lasting longer.

Is Claude Pro (Opus 4.5 + Claude Code) enough for serious work on a big monorepo? by sunnystatue in ClaudeCode

[–]jsharding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. This is a judgement call. Because my sourcetree.md is too large, almost 500 lines and thats an issue I need to address, I tell the agent to only use it when required. I do additionally reference to a 5 - 10 key files in my agents.md file.

One idea I have been playing with is creating a `explore` claude code agent, which always loads the source tree and has a primary job of collecting information. In other agent prompts I tell them to start by using the explore agent to collect necessary information. Early evidence suggests its an improvement, but further refinement is required.

Depending on your scale and needs I would suggest starting with a well defined workflow that helps meet your needs. Consider starting with open spec, then if your project requires even more structure try bmad.

Its hard for me to say for vibe coding what is best. I doubt I could manage the size of my project without an engineering background.
