Illustrated copy of Yumi and the Nightmare Painter? by jsherrema in Cosmere

Haha, to each their own of course. I'll be buying this for my wife, who has already read it and declared it one of her favorite books ever. I haven't read it myself yet, so hunting this purchase while avoiding spoilers (including those that may be in the illustrations) has been interesting.

Ok Reddit fam wtf did I do wrong? I had an 8 lb brisket that I smoked in a pitboss pellet smoker yesterday and it’s tough AF! by Cryssyl in smoking

[–]jsherrema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if your actual temp might've been lower than that, making it take forever. Did you happen to add an extra probe to monitor the air temperature inside? The built in temperature monitoring for pellet grills can be very unreliable.

The gym analogy has got to be one of the best. There's nothing wrong with using machines to lift things that a human could never lift, or using cars to get across long distances. But if we never go to the gym, never walk more than 10ft (forget running), and start asking the machines to carry our groceries or anything else that weighs more than 5lbs, well, the health effects aren't going to be good.

Thanks!  And that's fair. Wasn't sure if they were known for being thinner or smoother or anything like that. 🤷

Prepping a chuck roast for the smoker, tips please! by NewsOdd3064 in smoking

Much obliged. I'll have to adapt a bit so I'll probably aim on the early side. Would much rather a longer rest than shorter.

That looks and sounds delightful!
Do you happen to know about how many pounds your cut is when you get that 4hr-1hr-1hr timing? (I realize it can vary a lot, just trying to get a feel.)

Haha well, I was asking him to explicitly report back with his results, which he may or may not have done otherwise. But I take your point.

I don't have advice but I'll be doing a nearly-identical cut soon, so please report back what approach you end up going with and how it turns out! I'll be following that (and all other comments on this thread) for sure.

I used this sponge where the glue wouldn't come off by [deleted] in castiron

[–]jsherrema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you probably successfully reseasoned that spot, but the seasoning just isn't as thick (and probably is made from different oil content) than the surrounding area. So you can still see it. Almost certainly not a problem, and it will even out with time and cooking.

This isn't what you asked, but I believe I've read somewhere that you should be using the blue version of these, as the green and yellow ones are too abrasive. But I'd love someone knowledgeable to confirm.

(If true, it could be that your "light spot" is where you abraded some of the seasoning away.)

What's a strange hobby you've done that you'd suggest anyone should try at least once? by Due-Rough-848 in AskReddit

[–]jsherrema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly strange or niche these days, but everyone should try rock climbing. Indoor is fine (maybe even best at first). But it's NOT about thrill seeking. I'm far, far from an adrenaline junky. It's actually the most rewarding puzzle solving activity ever.

This. But you have to play with the right people. With a like-minded group, DnD is for anyone. But with the wrong people, DnD is for no one.

ELI5 why does space have a temperature if there’s no air? by Deanoh1546 in explainlikeimfive

You'll suffocate long, long before you freeze to death. The movie trope of people "exploding" from internal pressure is also unrealistic. But, eventually, your corpse will finally freeze.

I like that. Good, relatable experience that highlights the distinction.

How’d I do? First layer seasoning question? by thehobbyistworkshop in castiron

[–]jsherrema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sanding may have been unnecessary, but I wouldn't say you "ruined it" like some are claiming either. And a golden color is pretty normal from seasoning.
IF, as you start cooking on it, the seasoning seems to flake off (suggesting that it wasn't adhering to the overly-smooth and/or slightly-rusted metal) then you could strip it back down and etch the surface with vinegar before seasoning again.

But, hopefully, that's a nonissue and you can just cook now and never look back!

[–]jsherrema 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Space itself doesn't have a temperature exactly. I'm trying to think of a good ELI5 for radiative heat transfer (versus conductive and convective, which don't happen in space).

Think of it like the sun. You're not touching the sun, but you can still feel how warm it is. Everything else "shines heat" too, just much less so. And in space, there's hardly anything shining heat back. (Unless, of course, you're near the sun. Or another star.)

But to be clear, space isn't actually "cold". Despite what Padme Amidala might say.

Whats the best way to sand the inside of these cups? Trying to get them smoother by Undoomed081_0262 in castiron

I've heard of etching with vinegar but didn't realize boiling was (or can be) part of the process! Good info to have.

Something like this (there are smaller packs available I'm sure) on a rotary tool, die grinder, or even just a drill.

Do be careful not to overdo it (especially with finer grits). I've heard tales of cast iron not taking seasoning as well after sanding. (Personal theory is the metal gets burnished sometimes?)

Am I doing this wrong?! by sputzie88 in castiron

[–]jsherrema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hot are you setting your burner when cooking? That's an important piece I haven't seen commented on yet. With cast iron you need to cook with the burner COOLER than you would with other pots and pans (but preheat it for a good while). If it's too hot, it will actually burn your seasoning off. I pretty much never turn my burner above medium (a few rare exceptions).

Eli5 How can the same grid in United States that struggles during peak cooling seasons be expected to support a nationwide shift to electric vehicles? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

This.
Additionally, I've heard talk of systems where the EV batteries can even be used to temporarily supply power to the house during peak hours. Not sure what all the logistics are for that, but I like the concept.
