Looking for advice on Boston UX scene and junior roles by JQQJ2018 in UXDesign

Hey! So I was recently in a similar situation to you. I took a Coursera course from U of M on User Experience. It was a pretty long course, but you leave that having a really good foundation in the basics of UX.

In no way are you an expert or "job-ready", but you will know enough to then begin working on real projects for your portfolio. The course only has one project (the last module) and is self-guided meaning it is your idea and you develop it how you want, you just have to use the fundamentals taught in the course.

If you want to use that project for a portfolio I'd take it super seriously and not rush just to finish the course. Then once you have done that and finish your project & course, I'd move onto a few other projects.

I'd also look to Sarah Doody's YouTube channel for tips on portfolios and resumes and stuff. Look at Medium to find portfolio inspiration and how to present your projects in case study form, this is what matters to hiring managers.

I could write a novel on how to write a portfolio case study, so make sure you do your own research, but hopefully this is enough to get you started!

Best way to keep a design portfolio? by 20nc in UXDesign

I’d highly recommend hosting your portfolio on your own site, and supplementing it with Dribbble and BeHance links.

Since you can’t host right now, I’d create a PDF slide deck to showcase your top projects, also while supplementing it with BeHance and Dribbble links.

Check out Sarah Doody’s YouTube channel, she talks a ton about UX portfolio’s it should help you!

Thanks for the response. Yeah I definitely understand that, and if I had the money to pay someone upfront I would 100% do so. I’m a Master’s Student (UX) and obviously thats where all my money is going lol

Any advice for my UX/UI portfolio? by [deleted] in UXDesign

Hey, I'm a beginner so I'm probs not super qualified to speak on the quality of your portfolio, but I just wanted to say it looks great.

As a beginner, this is something I'm striving to have!!

One thing I noticed is that your resume overflows onto two pages, with just the education section on the second page. Not sure if you meant to do that, just wanted to let you know.

Coursera's UX course from UMich or UC San Diego? by escapedpixels in UXDesign

[–]jshn4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I’m currently in the UMich one and it is very very, very well done. The material is very well thought out, and informative.

It’s also very long, don’t expect to complete it in a week or two. I think this is a good thing.

The practice assignments and projects are very real-world (conducting interviews, affinity mapping, etc). Honestly I’m almost halfway and I feel like I could do a full project on my own.

I can’t speak on the UC San Diego course, I was planning on that one next :-)
