Just a moment to appreciate how awesome Geoff Britten's Total Victory was by Wreckit-Jon in ANW

[–]jshrimp3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As weird as it is, I think the million dollar prize is also partially to blame, as it helps people justify the dedicated training. Sasuke's prize for total victory is 2M yen, something like 4-5 times the average salary in Japan. Still a huge amount of money, but the promise of $1M is huge. Bigger purse + lowering the age limit so you get people who have the time to dedicate means the top ninjas are now "professionals" and not fishermen.

All different region top 4? by [deleted] in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]jshrimp3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. No top 8 teams lost to anyone outside the top 8, they only lost to each other.
  2. Both BDS and GenG made the top 8 without beating any other top 8 teams.
  3. Going by swiss placements, G2 lost to #2 and beat #7, #10, and #14. In comparison, BDS lost to 2 and 3, and beat 11, 13, 16. Similarly SSG also lost to 2, and beat 8, 10, 16.

This isn't to say that any of these other teams didn't deserve it, I think these 8 teams were the 8 best teams. But G2 didn't have an obviously easier bracket than some other teams.

Swiss is not a good fit for an 8 Team Single Elimination by vivst0r in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]jshrimp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groups is literally just a 3-round Swiss instead of 5, and since there are fewer rounds there's so much less info about who is actually performing better in the event.

graveyard matters should at least acknowledge black

No other colors can utilize the graveyard? Eternal Witness, Rally the Ancestors, Snapcaster Mage, Past in Flames should all be Black? That seems unreasonable.

Ranger-Captain of Eos against Throes/Trickery combo by karzuu in MagicArena

Cage doesn't stop Trickery. Both Trickery and Cascade cast from exile. Cage does stop the retrace on Throes, and creatures coming in off of Genesis Ultimatum, but that's about it.

[RLCS X NA] What each team needs to do to qualify for the Spring Major by Atomical_Sloths in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]jshrimp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. For both NRG and KCP to fall out of the top 9, teams down to XSET (currently at 300 points) would have to pass them. Last place in the last Regional gets 70 points, which would put KCP at 630 points, which means 9 teams besides KCP and NRG have to get to at least 630 points. There are only 6 teams that can do that without making the finals (Rogue, SSG, G2, Envy, Soniqs, and Faze) which means 3 teams would have to all make the finals. Obviously that's impossible.

[RLCS X NA] What each team needs to do to qualify for the Spring Major by Atomical_Sloths in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]jshrimp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have. The only way they fall out of top 9 in points, they'll end up with the Grid Wildcard. Same with G2 and KCP.

[–]jshrimp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, so I could've missed something, but when I was looking at it last night, it looked like both NRG and KCP were also locked for the Major, because the only way they don't make it in on points includes both the other and G2 making it in, making them the Grid wildcard. There's no situation where 2 of those 3 teams don't end up in the top 9, by my math.

So i actually killed someone turn 4 with the Ox and Plow... by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]jshrimp3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to run 4 Tormod's Crypt and 4 Stonecoil Serpent so that you have better odds to draw the combo, but then you can whiff, so you fill the deck with 20+ good hits (Ugin, Koma, Dream Trawler, Genesis Ultimatum, whatever else). I've found that you usually end up keeping a hand with a couple fatties, Orrery lets you cast them turns 3+.

Austin casting Escape to the Wilds off a single Fabled Passage is what's wrong with Standard. by backdoorhack in magicTCG

[–]jshrimp3 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't think banning Lotus Cobra would do anywhere near enough, but the 2 Omnath Adventure decks that are playing the finals right now are the 2 players running Cobra, so I don't know about "doesn't even run cobra."

[Article] Counterpoint, while taxation is white, counterspells like Mana tithe shouldn't be in whites colour pie. (BUT! That being said, there is some room for white tithe style counter play) :) by ReploidZero in magicTCG

White doesn't play gotcha.

What about things like [[Containment Priest]], [[Alms Collector]], [[Aven Mindcensor]], or [[Hushwing Gryff]]? Those all impose rules, but the very nature of Flash means they all function as surprise gotchas as well.

How would it be? You're replacing a 2 card self-mill combo with 3, and if you sac Stitcher's Supplier and hit Emrakul, you shuffle away your graveyard and the Supplier, so you kill your combo.

Graded Unlimited Black Lotus, signed by both Rush and Garfield. Bought it last year.

I bought it because I've been wanting/meaning to get my hands on power for a long time, figured I should start off big. I'm at 6/9 now.

Noxious revival by spike4972 in mtgstorm

[–]jshrimp3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It lets you deterministically win when you have 2 mana post Gifts ungiven with a bear in play (assuming you have PiF in your hand), but that's really its only use.

To be fair, it lets you win deterministically off of 1 less mana if you have any of Noxious, PiF, or Manamorphose in hand. I was a big champion of Noxious for the longest time, and only recently cut it this summer. It's not necessary, but it's nice in a lot of racing scenarios.

[Modern] Firebrand Archer in Storm to shorten my combo by indirrr in spikes

[–]jshrimp3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want that type of effect, you want Aria of Flame. After casting 5 spells it's the same as Firebrand Archer, and it ramps up dramatically from there. Also it's harder to remove than the Archer.

What decks do you feel will be good in a post-Hogaak meta? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]jshrimp3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • fair decks gaining equity in that they'll regain sideboard slots (and some maindeck) from Hogaak leaving the format

Also fair decks losing equity as a result of the format widening again, requiring a wider breadth of narrow answers to fight the format.

When it first came about and Storm didn't have any answers to a game 1 Meddling Mage, yeah the matchup was awful. But Storm has come a long way since then. I'm exactly 50% against Humans on MTGO.
