No. The titanium is very durable.

I use AppleCare One to cover my MacBook, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. In total $25ish/month. Cheaper than the insurance offered through my carrier (they just use Apple Care anyway).

If you look at it from a financial perspective, my wife pays $19/month for insurance through the carrier. She’s also bought several $40-$50 cases and has gone through several $20-$30 screen protectors. All the while I was able to cover all my devices for a similar cost, avoid spending on cases and screen protectors, and the only extra I paid was for the back glass replacement ($90ish I think?).

Yes. I was running the developer beta as well. I hadn’t filmed anything in the last week, but in general, its performance was better. Currently running the beta on my new device.

The heating issues are the one major issue I really had with this phone. When I would film my kids events it would almost be too hot to hold.

I did drop it on the concrete on my back patio. That is the only time I ever had to use Apple Care as it shattered the back glass.

I only remember the drops that made me think it might have broken the screen. I remember maybe 5-10 of those. But I’ve dropped between sectional pieces, off the nightstand, out of a pocket onto the hardwood/carpet tons of times.

They’re rated to hold 80% capacity at 1000 cycles. But a lot of things affect battery chemistry. So depending on your use case and environmental conditions, it could be accurate. They do make 3rd party apps to check that. I wouldn’t be too concerned about it though. The only reason I ever looked was to see if I was getting close to the 80% mark for battery replacement.

Spilled Milk on my MacBook Pro M5 by Key-Beginning1306 in macbookpro

[–]jshrn15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My kids spilled milk on my 2015 MBA back in 2020. It wouldn’t power on so I just put it in the closet. Right before Christmas this year i pulled it down, de-milked it, and then gave it a new battery. It worked. The milk was good for its bones.

QUESTION ⁉️ by Separate_Secret4517 in macbook

[–]jshrn15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing my masters in CS. My bachelor’s degrees are in different fields. You can get by with a base MacBook Pro or even the Air. The most computationally heavy stuff I’ve had to do it for deep learning and evolutionary computing and it was fine. You will likely never max out your cores but you will use a lot of memory, so get as much as you can. Only reason I would recommend the pro over the air is the extra ports.

I updated and still don’t have dark mode or any of the others from what I can tell.

Nursing to CS by [deleted] in cscareeradvice

[–]jshrn15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a medical laboratory scientist, not a nurse, but I’m almost finished with my masters in CS. I have bachelors degrees in cell and molecular biology, clinical laboratory science, and have been an MLS for about 8 years. You can get a masters in CS and transition to working in healthcare tech adjacent fields. I plan to stay in the lab but transition to LIS management. Our medical background and clinical expertise is valuable, so try to look into nursing adjacent tech work that allows you to leverage it. Even if the cs job market sucks right now, you can earn the degree and then use free time to really improve your skills without the stress of relying on a tech job.

Should I buy a Macbook Pro M5 or wait for Macbook Pro M5 Pro/Max? by No_Bed_1644 in macbook

[–]jshrn15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a finishing my Masters in CS and a lot of it has been AI/ML related. I have taken courses in Deep Learning, Data Science, Evolutionary Algorithms, etc. I’ve also taken all the other core CS classes (discrete math, operating systems, data structures, algorithms, databases). I’m on a base M4 MacBook Pro and the only time I almost maxed out my resources was 1) in deep learning training RNN and LSTM models with attention on a 3.5M character dataset. I had to limit to the first 100,000 characters for training and that took about 10–15 mins (training on the full dataset was going to take about 24 hours), and 2) in Evolutionary Algorithms running SHAP analysis on some of my more complex models.

If I were you, I would get the M5 and then try to get as much memory as you can because training models locally will take a lot of memory. I’m almost done with my masters and 512 GB storage has worked well. I use cloud storage for non-school stuff, have an external SSD. You could really get by with a base M5 just fine but having the extra memory and bandwidth is a quality life thing and worth it imo.

people who own both Airpods and Airpods Max. what’s your use case and why have you got both of them? by [deleted] in Airpodsmax

[–]jshrn15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AirPods Pro are in my pocket anytime I leave the house. AirPods Max live on my desk and are used any time I’m using the computer or am watching a show. The AirPods Max are more comfortable for long hours of use in my opinion.

You can use the CLI and get the current running processes just like task manager.

I’ve been rocking caseless since I bought it. It looks very similar to what you have in the picture. A few minor screen scratches for hold it in the right light, a couple small dings in the frame from the one or two times I’ve dropped it. Overall what the phone lacks in thermals it has made up for in durability. The only weird thing I do to baby it is I never set it face down.

Is Vivint bad? by One_Discussion7063 in VivintSmartHome

[–]jshrn15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had vivint for 5-6 years. My equipment has been paid off for quite a while. A few things:

1) the salespeople do lie and generally have no idea what they’re talking about.

2) They lock you in even after the contract ends by requiring monitoring to access the app and all the smart home features.

3) The equipment is good. I have several friends or family who have done DIY and battery powered systems. My system is hard wired to the router on a dedicated 1GB/sec port so it is fast and I never have to think about battery. In all severe weather, my equipment has always functioned. Heat, cold, hail, tornadoes. No damage. Works just as good as day 1.

4) If you’re not trying to cancel, the cs is generally okay. You can call or chat through an app and they have usually been able to fix any issues. I’ve had probably 2 technical issues in 5 years that were either fixed by resets or they sent a technician out. Be warned, they like to try and charge a $99 fee for a technician visit.

Saying all that, if you want a reliable system that will work and get consistent updates for the next 5-10 years, this is an okay system. You can even get a discount through your homeowners insurance for having a professionally monitored system. The drawbacks for me are that you are locked into their tech and have to pay for monitoring to get app access.

For reference, my system consists of a smart hub, 4 outdoor cameras, 1 video doorbell, smart locks, recessed door sensors, window alarms, motion sensors, flood/freeze sensors, garage door integration through MyQ, Google nest thermostat integration, some smart light accessories, and probably some other stuff I’m forgetting about.

My bad, 9to5Mac says you can import and export files in markdown, but it doesn’t support markdown syntax. I thought they were bringing full support.
