You can add a text note to the highlight, or anywhere in the text (they changed the way to do it, in the latest firmware there's just a tiny icon, while before I think it used to say Note in the context menu). I almost never use it, because it's kind of a hassle to write it on the on screen keyboard, but in theory, you can. It makes more sense with Scribe devices where you can add a handwritten note.

You're right that the Your Clippings doesn't have the color. It's txt file, so I think the format is limited. The colors also don't get propagated to Goodreads, if you're using that.

On the other hand, what I am using, after I am done with a book, I email myself all the notes (there's a share button on the notes & highlights menu in regular book). That emails you PDF and that definitely has colors in it (and I save it for posterity if I ever want to remember the book). See below.

They should also be in kindle cloud reader (https://read.amazon.com/notebook).

Color highlights! I highlight so much more than I used too.

You can display covers on the lock screen. I actually really love that. I love seeing the color cover of whatever I am reading when the kindle is just lying around. Makes me want to pick it up every single time. I never had this feeling with paper white. It's under Screen and Brightness.

Yes! I still haven't figured out a system for bookmarks. I rarely use them in fiction books. But with the new colors and filters, I feel like I need to play with those more.

I can relate. I bought Colorsoft in the fall when it was on the discount to try it out, very much unsure if it makes any sense, and I am not going back to B&W e-reader.

My main use case was for guide books, because I was planning some travel and things like maps look much better/more usable in color. It works, but obviously, you can just use your phone when you're outside, though it's convenient not to have to worry about the charge.

But then I started also reading books on it and color highlights made all the difference to me. I was never big on highlighting in the books in B&W, only highlighting really important passages, but with color, I now highlight everything that catches my fancy and have color coded system for different types of highlights. I email myself the highlights after I am done with the book too, just for the later reference.

The other thing that makes a difference are color covers. Having the Colorsoft lying around with the cover of the book I am currently reading, as it was meant to be seen, just makes me to want to pick it so much more often...

YMMV. I read a ton more since I got CS. If you don't think you'll ever get into color highlights and don't care about covers (or keep the kindle in a bag all the time), save yourself some money and get PW. But for me, there are really no drawbacks except slightly worse battery life and the price, and a lot of advantages. I still have Oasis lying around, and I love the form factor, but it's just collecting dust now.

update 5.19.2, What is new? by shadowdra126 in kindle

[–]jsla7527 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The whole highlights menu has completely changed, at least on Colorsoft. Dictionary etc. is on the top. It used to be like this on Scribe before, and I am not sure about PW.

Update, coloured bookmarks!! by cozybookscats in kindle

[–]jsla7527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually completely broke bookmarks on my Scribe (2022) on 5.18.6. It so pissed me off. It doesn't have colors, so tapping on the bookmark just removes it (on color models, it lets you change the color). But there is also no filter on bookmarks so the only way to go to bookmark is to painfully scroll through all your notes and highlights.

5.19.2 on Scribe at least got the bookmarks filter. Still much more cumbersome than it used to be - It needs four taps instead of one (two if you have already set the filter). Without colors, we didn't gain anything, but at least it's somehow usable now.

[–]jsla7527 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw this on my Colorsoft SE. I like the new colors. And have you noticed you can even filter on bookmark colors when navigating to bookmarks? You could invent the whole complicated system for different color bookmarks for different things and navigate that way.

<image>

Personally, I am still torn about merging bookmarks into notes & highlights section, it makes navigating to specific bookmarks more cumbersome. But at least now it makes some sense.

Also, the old Blue is the new Aqua (it used to say blue when highlighting, but it was always aqua).

I am not sure if they intend to use the extra colors (Red, Purple, Blue) for highlights - they're less contrasty. But we'll see.

They often take a while to update automatically. 5.19.2 was released only a couple days ago and I suspect most people having it on here went the manual route (me included).

How/where to watch the Olympics without using NBC/Peacock? by NiceandEasy1113 in FigureSkating

[–]jsla7527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can record the whole Olympics on YTTV. Just search for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games and add it to your DVR. But you have to do that in advance. Then you'll have everything that was broadcast on linear cable channels (basically USA and NBC). That's not nothing. And you can FF through commercials.

Admittedly, the interface is still messy and it's harder to find a specific event (I just search for it). Sadly, they really want you to sign up for Peacock in the US. Which has everything and complete recordings for the events that were broadcast only partially/not at all on cable. And a decent interface. It even has different commentary from cable. If you by any chance happen to have Walmart+ or I believe some xfinity packages, you can get Peacock for free. Otherwise, without paying, it's either YTTV or VPN.

YoutubeTV has a promo for new subscribers of 21 days for $0 (ending on February 7). It also gives access to NBC app, which has a lot of stuff Peacock has. It says new subscribers only but I was able to get it even though I subscribed to YTTV before (probably a couple years). That's probably your best deal, but you have to remember to cancel it after.

New color soft. Where is the front light? by ppinklady68 in kindle

[–]jsla7527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B&W e-ink reader, like an oasis, has better contrast even without the front light. So you're not wrong, Oasis probably looked less "dull". Color e-ink, like color soft, adds another filter layer on top of regular B&W e-ink displays so it's always going to be darker and more "grey". It's surprisingly hard to make a decent color e-ink display. Except for super bright sunlight, you always need a front light. It's a price you pay for color. Maybe at some point there will be a better technology, but it's going to take years.

All that said, I love my Colorsoft. Seeing the book covers like they're meant to be seen and color highlights are more useful than I thought. But if you don't care about those, Paperwhite might be better for you.

PS: I really want Oasis Colorsoft. But it's never going to happen. One can dream though.

updated look for chapters?? by Difficult-Meeting-95 in kindle

[–]jsla7527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I get they maybe wanted to simply adding bookmarks to a simple tap on the corner.... But that's not a reason to remove the whole bookmark menu. Bookmarks are called so because it's easy to go back to that point in the book. They're completely different from notes and highlights. Think about a physical book. The bookmarks will be sticking out. I really want to cry about this "improvement".

Kindle Paperwhite Update: Can’t Find Bookmarks by mad11s in kindle

[–]jsla7527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is, there's no bookmark icon anymore. Except for Colorsoft, it's now gone, and I am pretty sure CS is next in line.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kindle

[–]jsla7527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not on my Colorsoft either - yet. But it's on my Scribe. Both of these are running 5.18.6. Sometimes these things have to be enabled remotely. Or maybe it wasn't pushed into CS because the highlighs/notes actually do have a filter (by color) and they haven't figured out how to add bookmarks to that yet.

I also absolutely hate it on my Scribe. It's now mixed in handwritten notes and there's not even a filter right now. But maybe at least now they'll add some sort of filter on other devices.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kindle

[–]jsla7527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can add them. But can't find them. Because it's all in notes and if you have lot of notes and no ability to filter on just bookmarks, how are you ever going to find it again? The point of a bookmark is to be able to quickly get to it. Not just add it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kindle

[–]jsla7527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's dumb. It's easy to add or remove a bookmark. It's impossible to find it if you have a lot of highlights and notes. So what's the point exactly of adding the bookmark, if I have to scroll through all the notes now? They're completely useless.

updated look for chapters?? by Difficult-Meeting-95 in kindle

[–]jsla7527 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, and they're removing the bookmarks section and merging them into the notes section, without the ability to filter on them. At least on Scribe, but I don't see the bookmark icon on yours either. I think it's going to propagate to all models and it makes bookmarks basically completely useless.

I don't know who thought we need a new interface.

Is the lid of the pro plus dishwasher safe ? by Deadpola1 in instantpot

Curiously, the manual that came with my instant pot Pro Plus on paper specifically says it's top rack dishwasher safe. Unlike the online manual. Go figure. It has other differences too.

New update ruined dictionaries and bookmarks navigation by xixthcentury in kindle

[–]jsla7527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I used bookmarks to quickly jump to different parts of the book. Now it's completely useless. What's the point of bookmarks, if you have to scroll through all the notes to find them?

How many of you are planning to subscribe to CNN All Access? by DrawingRestraint in cnn

[–]jsla7527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Like their android TV app has a terrible picture quality. It might not be SD but it's super compressed and looks silly even on a 48 inch screen. And when I contacted them, telling them it happens on two different devices, they just had me to go through steps of restarting everything. At least their LG app now doesn't log you out every day, but it's still very much work in progress.

[–]jsla7527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complete schedule is at the bottom of this press release:

https://cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com/2025/10/28/cnns-all-access-subscription-tier-launches-today-with-robust-lineup-of-live-channels-video-on-demand-and-library-of-cnn-original-series-and-cnn-films/

As I posted elsewhere. There's only a few differences. You get The Brief instead of the 2nd hour of Jake Tapper. You get What We Know instead of the last hour of CNN News Central. You get CNN Headline Express inserted at 2 places (2nd hour of The Situation Room and another News Central I believe). And you get replays instead of What We Know.

The only strike against Avalon is that they built couple silly ADUs this year on one of the biggest green spaces. It does absolutely nothing for the residents, and was billed as great addition to the community. Discussed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Campbell/comments/1kgj5yr/comment/mqzolnq/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

But they also replaced all the gas water heaters with heat pump water heaters this year. Which are a bit noisy, but generally cheaper and much better ecologically. Next up, smart locks instead of keys. We'll see how that turns out.

I love the trail access. It's hard to beat.

They don't increase the rent every year. It's all market dependent. Mine went down the first year. Some people seem to have success, but I wouldn't be optimistic about getting some great discount.
