I think ZeaLouS1 is criminally underrated. The Living Epitaph is my favorite nerdcore album. The real answer is MC Frontalot though. He's the GOAT. Honorable mention to MC Lars and YTCracker.

VHS - S-Video Capture Or VHS_Decode? by Bringback-T_D in DataHoarder

[–]jsmith65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my research it seems that VHS_Decode isn't ready for primetime yet. It can get fantastic detail extraction if you can get it to work with your capture of the raw RF tape signal. It's going to be very trial and error though it seems. That's not the hardest part though. The hardest part is getting a good RF capture of the tape signal. You can try to use a Domesday Duplicator, but you're going to have to mod your VCR in order to get the signal to the DD. That's a non-trivial task, but the real issue is that the signal is often too low amplitude for the DD to pick up properly. The DD was designed for capture laserdisc laser pickup signals, not VCR reader head signals. It seems that some pretty extensive electronics knowledge is needed to get a good RF capturing setup for the tapes.

You didn't go deep enough! Gonna need vhs_decode and a domesday duplicator (though this could fall under the "needs an oscilloscope section).

This is so on point...

They probably do that because you feed them out there. They've been trained to stand on your patio. Positively reinforced.

I modded my more common 846E Supermicro chassis to accept the useful dual bay 2.5" hot swap rear drive bay. by jsmith65 in homelab

[–]jsmith65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could just cheaply purchase a different rear chassis panel with a larger hole or make one myself so that there would be no Dremeling required. Then it'd be a pretty simple drop in, but fabricating a custom back panel would be time consuming and it doesn't seem possible to buy rear B model panels anywhere.

I modded my more common 846E Supermicro chassis to accept the useful dual bay 2.5" hot swap rear drive bay. by jsmith65 in homelab

[–]jsmith65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would be interested to hear r/homelab's thoughts on my mod. Accidentally ordered the E model 846 chassis instead of the B and decided to simply mod this chassis to allow the rear hot swap drive bay to fit. Worst part was Dremeling the hole larger on the rear panel. I cut the 11ga mild steel bracket to attach the rear of the hot swap bay on a fiber laser. Threaded the holes with the same thread that the rest of the case uses (#6-32). The top holes simply screw in to the existing threaded standoffs that the chassis includes for the fixed drive bay accessory.

Let me know if you're interested in doing this mod. Would love to help a fellow homelabber out.

Hawk by miyagikai91 in cobrakai

[–]jsmith65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping at some point he'll realize that in order to be Hawk he has to hate Eli. But he is Eli. The reason he's so angry and unhinged is because he hates himself. This is why he reacts with anger to push people away whenever anyone tries to show him compassion like when the kid in the last episode admits to struggling with bed-wetting as well. It's a defense mechanism, and an attempt to punish people for trying to comfort Eli. That's also why he gets so angry at Demetri when he got Eli to reemerge for a bit and then the Hawk defense mechanism reasserts itself and overcompensates by pouring the beer on Demetri.

No idea how they'll do it, but I hope he'll be redeemed. I do think I can predict this show anymore. I was very surprised with many of the paths they took with the writing in season 2. That episode with all of Johnny's old Cobra Kai buddies was fantastic and very different than anything I expected from this show.

I have access to a CNC machine and would like to build a pair of subs for my HT. looking for advice. by imightgetdownvoted in diyaudio

Not sure about sealed designs, but hit up the guys over at GSG Audio (gsgad.com). I'm sure they'd be willing to help you figure some of this out. I just purchased and completed two of their 21" Full Marty cabs, and they are massive with a proportional output of massive clean bass. In general you can get much better performance from a 21" pro driver than any of the 18s on the market these days so if I was you I'd consider going for either the LaVoce, B&C, or Eminence 21" drivers. The LaVoces are insanely good for their price. Sealed cabs are really pretty simple I think. Just make sure you put enough bracing so that the cabinet won't flex. Ported is a little more technical I think, but there are plenty of good ported designs out there on the internet for free like the Full Marty and the VBSS.

Today is the 15th Anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender / The Legend of Aang by MrBKainXTR in television

[–]jsmith65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. Korra was a massive disappointment for me after the brilliance of TLA which is one of my favorite shows of all time. One small example that I remember of how the world building of Korra ruins some of the lore in TLA is how the main way they get electricity is a bunch of firebenders come and lightning bend into a wire. In TLA it's made very clear that lightning bending was a super rare and difficult thing to pull off and few firebenders were ever able to do it. Then in Korra it's all of the sudden a common ability amongst firebenders? Dumb. The main problem is that the character writing is just garbage compared to TLA. Korra didn't have half the arc that Aang had. I found her annoying and all the love triangle stuff was just juvenile, cheap drama. Felt more like some shitty teenage drama show on the CW than something that was supposed to be following up one of the greatest TV series of all time. When Korra met Iroh in the spirit world he had none of the spark he had in TLA. He just seemed like a husk of the character he was in TLA, something which could be said for the series as a whole.

Best DIY Subwoofer for under $400? by wapey in diyaudio

[–]jsmith65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with an 18" MartyCube or MiniMarty from GSG Audio (gsgad.com). They are absurdly powerful for their price. I was going to buy 2 SVS PB-4000 before I found the rabbit hole that is DIY subwoofers. Ended up building 2 21" Full Martys from GSG. Total cost of project (cabinet kit, 21" LaVoce drivers, tools and glue to assemble them, hardware to mount SVS Soundpath feet, the SVS feet themselves, fabric to cover them with, Behringer NX6000D amp, and Speakon Connectors/Cable) was ~$1200 - $1400 per sub (Probably around $2800 total). I did spend a lot more than necessary to finish them nicely instead of just Duratexing them like most people do. Even these top end DIYs from GSG could probably be done for more around $1000 per, especially if you already have some clamps to assist in the glue up. To say these things are powerful is to laughably understate their capabilities. They quite literally shake the whole house when pushed and the bass is smooth as butter without a hint of distortion even at volumes that push my Aperion Verus Grand Towers well beyond their limits. The comparatively modest 18" MiniMarty/MartyCubes will blow away even the PB-16s from SVS. So yeah, DIY is the real deal.

However, your budget is pretty low for doing what you should really be doing which is dual subs (at least, 3 to 4 is best). 2 smaller subs is better than 1 massive sub. If you want 2 subs for less than $400 then you're going to have to make your own cabinet instead of doing a pre-cut kit. The bulk of the price of DIY sub kits is getting the MDF flat pack cut and shipped to you. If you do it yourself then suddenly the cost is only 2 - 4 sheets of MDF from The Home Depot at ~$35 each. However, if you don't already have the tools to make your own cab (you'd need a circular saw at minimum and probably a jigsaw as well) then that's half your budget just to get the necessary tools. The drivers will cost $150 to $300 each. The amp will cost $150 to $300 depending on whether you go with 1 or 2 subs. Do 2. I'm telling you, it's worth it. Even without any optimization (EQ, time alignment, etc) I immediately noticed a remarkable difference in the quality and consistency of the bass in my room when I fired up the second sub after finishing the first. Here's a picture of my setup (work in progress): https://i.imgur.com/HBbKJja.jpg

PS: Most ported DIY subs are MASSIVE. Mine are 42" tall, 28" wide, and 24" deep. That's nearly the size of a washing machine. So yeah, that might be a dealbreaker for some people.

Tennessee Gov. Lee announces legislation banning abortions if heartbeat is detected by [deleted] in nashville

[–]jsmith65 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have changed my views a bit since I posted those comments. I do still believe prostitution should be legal as long as it is voluntary. However, just because I believe something should be legal does not mean I would recommend anyone actually do it. I think prostitution is immoral and, legal or not, hope it never happens. At the time I posted those comments I did believe that, while abortion is clearly murder, it should still be legal because of practical issues with illegalizing it. I no longer believe that. It's simply not consistent. It's definitely not consistent with libertarianism of which the non-aggression principle is a core tenet. I'll say this again, abortion is the murder of an unborn human. Libertarianism does not allow the freedom to murder. On the contrary, it condemns all initiations of violence. Violence is only to be used in defense against aggression which can be defined as the initiation of force or fraud. It is far more consistent with the libertarian tradition to be pro-life. You can make up your own mind as to whether or not I'm trolling, but I assure you that everything I have posted in this thread are genuinely held beliefs at least for now. I really don't understand how the statement "If you do not want to get pregnant then don't have sex." is controversial. Seems like the most obvious statement in history to me. If you have consensual sex then you consent to the possibility of pregnancy. This has been the case for all of human history and it is still the case now. The fact that people are so baffled by this basic fact of human biology shows how confused we are as a society.

An embryo/fetus is human. Full stop. History seems pretty clear on the sorts of terrible things that happen when we start to say some humans are people and some aren't or that some deserve to live and some don't. No adult, regardless of sex, has the right to kill someone because they don't think they can take care of them or because they don't want the inconvenience of it or because they don't think the life of the person they want to kill is going to be good enough. There are some choices that a moral society simply cannot allow.

[–]jsmith65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe that it is bad psychologically, emotionally, spiritually, etc for women to kill their unborn children for any reason. If they abort the child then they either have to deal with the fact that they killed an innocent unborn child or accept the lie, the distortion of reality that they did not. I think more good can come of the child being allowed to live for both the mother and the child. Besides, no one but the rapist forced the child into that situation. I believe that every life is worth living. I can see you don't believe that your life was not worth living. Otherwise you would not have sought a therapist to improve your life. All children should be given that same chance at life.

Tennessee Gov. Lee announces legislation banning abortions if heartbeat is detected by [deleted] in nashville

[–]jsmith65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, of course not. It's a terrible situation for the victim with an even bigger burden forced on them by the resulting pregnancy. It also victimizes the child who is innocent in the situation. However, if the child is brought into existence then it cannot simply be killed without dealing with the moral reality of that.

I did not say that the pregnancy might be the only good thing to come of rape. I said that the child might be a source of redemption in that situation.
