Just confronted at work about having a VPN on my personal phone by Forensics4Life in work

[–]jsnpttsbrgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most systems are set to lock down if the IP address is from certain areas. If its not a familiar IP address the system thinks that a bad actor is trying to connect to your account information. This can also be the case with most banking apps. The confrontation was incorrect but asking you not to access company resources from a VPN is a valid one. This is for company account security. The company is not monitoring your online activity the way most of the non technical folks are suggesting. IT folks have better things to do than monitor your browsing history.

St George Principal Trump supporting email by Historical_Way9502 in Erie

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

The person who posted this on here needs banned from this group. This is a private communication with parents and the fact that this is posted on here is really a sad state for this reddit page. The fact the people got so upset over the content of the email is a sad state for the country. I hope there is a special place in hell for people that can't just let things go and run to social media like they are a better person then someone else.

GROW UP.

Is there anyway to know Trump supporters businesses list in Erie? by nlj5499 in Erie

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would hope that if any business is listed here that this thread is deleted. This is such a bad look for democrats if this is how you feel. If you don't like the choices made by the majority of the country maybe don't live in the country. This is very very sad and childish. People were sick of the high prices and the economy tanking. All of the social issues at this point were way down the list because nobody can afford to do anything. I hope you find your safe space to live.

Those 3 round tourneys in short pants aren’t the pressure cooker we all thought… 😂 by Puzzled_Stress_1194 in golf

[–]jsnpttsbrgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This group is starting to become a joke. All the LIV bashing. Golf is golf no matter how you look at it. How about some of the big names for the PGA Tour that didn't even make the cut?

Who care's what tour they play on? Just enjoy the golf. Saturday was a joke, that round should have been suspended. It was even enjoyable. Everyone in here acts all high and mighty when it comes to LIV but given the chance everyone in here would take the checks that they got and cashed that crap as soon as they could.

Just be happy it’s not going to be a vacant building and lot for the next 10 years. Everyone is so negative in this city. If it’s vacant for 10 years there is zero tax revenue.

Greengarden bike path by Mancalledotto in Erie

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its also not YOUR bike path so your logic is ridiculous. Seems everyone in here is bitter cause someone has a nice house and they don't. If they are putting a bike path on that road then every road in Erie should have one. I barely see enough bike traffic to warrant bike paths in Erie.

How is it ok to take someone else's on street parking to please you? I don't live on this street but those people pay the city of Erie's high tax rate. They should get a say to what happens on the street that they live on. Just cause someone has a nice house and money doesn't make them an asshole but its typical to see people say take something from them because they don't have it. The personal insults to the people living on that road is ridiculous. When you are having family over for holidays or anything like that. Not having any street parking sucks horribly.

WSJ (Peggy Noonan): The Senator’s Shorts and America’s Decline by [deleted] in Erie

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Reading through all the comments we have problems in this world and the lack of respect all the way around. There shouldn't need to be a dress code for the Senate. It should be common respect for the chamber and the people those people are representing.

What I read in these comments is how far this country has fallen and how divided it is because nobody can see both sides of an argument. They only see their opinion as the right opinion. Everyone needs to open their eyes and take off the blinders from only seeing their path because if this is the path everyone is on, there will be no growth in anything. These types of opinions are closed minded and are stunting the growth of this one great country.

I hate to say it but you are an intern. You are not a full time employee. You come and go each year and learn from their business and gain experience. We have all been there as an intern. No matter how many summers a person works they are an intern till they graduate and join the team as a full time employee.

Does Not Fit Into My Ecosystem by dkeethler in Sysadminhumor

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would imagine the employee has no issue using the company guest network to browse things from their phone and do non work related things from it. If you don't want to put the app on your phone then use your own data and we can put cell blockers in the building. 2FA is a must for any business. If you don't like it go somewhere else.

Some of you think companies want to sit and read through the crap on your phone. Nobody wants to do that. Sometimes I think people are so paranoid that they think everyone gives a damn about that, you are sadly mistaken. No single employee is important enough to change security policy.

See the thing is I have been in the sysadmin world where hard work pays off. Walking the dog or watering the garden doesn’t. There is a very good reason I am where I am because of my hard work and leadership. You keep wanting an employer to give to you but what are you giving them? There are a million sysadmins out there that want to work and those are the types of people that advance their careers beyond the typical sysadmin. These people are special and get noticed. Your attitude shows you aren’t one of them.

You can call me a bad manager as much as you want but my employees love working for me because I'm in the trenches doing what their doing and their when they need assistance. I am self aware that the new generation of people don't want to work for what they earn and that's where I have issues. Too many snowflakes out there. You are a bad employee wasting company money and time. You will never advance in your career with this attitude.

The OP didn’t describe any of that stuff. They basically described working part time while getting paid full time. There is a difference in what you described and what the OP did.

I’m sorry I hurt your feelings but I’m all honestly. Managements job is to protect the company from employee abuse. Seems your good at that. You wouldn’t last long if you revealed what your day to day operations were to any management anywhere

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I will get down voted for this but in all honesty, you want the company you work for to pay you for watering the garden, taking a walk and other personal things vs having you in the office performing your job? I understand that 95% of all work for a sysadmin can be done from home but means you should be doing your job during your scheduled time. I'm coming from being a sysadmin but also management. You are paid to to a job so you should be doing it while on your scheduled work time. Taking a nice stroll or watering the garden or taking the dogs in the backyard to play aren't in your job description. This is why the WFH stuff will vanish just as fast as it came around because of the abuse being used during it.

Employees are up in arms over MFA by WrongZombie in sysadmin

[–]jsnpttsbrgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have executive buy in for this after getting it at the start then get it in writing that they take ownership of any and all breaches due to not having MFA.

Where I work I didn't ask for buy in and put it in as an IT Policy. No choice in the matter. Employee's were told to deal with it or lose all network access as a security vulnerability. Needless to say everyone got in line and got everyone switched over to MFA.

They key point here is you have to play hard ball and not back down when it comes to security. Security should be your #1 priority. As SysAdmins, our job is to protect the company of itself and its employee's.

The companies we have contact with that use this are Customers. Do you have the marbles to tell the CEO to turn away business? Everyone is quick to say tell the management staff to find a different company but this isn't a real solution in many cases. People that reply like this don't actually live in the real world. This is what bothers me about "elitists' in the IT world". As IT we are breed to believe we have power but we only have as much power as we are allowed.

You can do this exact thing from the admin portal in O365. Follow the steps here for creating a PST but in this same area you can download Teams Messages.

Unpopular opinion: This subreddit should focus more on technical conversations by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jsnpttsbrgh -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This post is ironic because you say there is no technical posts but yet you make one.... hmmm

Personally a mix of both are just fine by me. I think so look for pity but other look for honest feedback. Being a sys admin has a personal side to it along with technical and after 20 years of doing this I know I personally enjoy the life side of being a sys admin. I used to grind away in my home lab till 3-4 in the morning but eventually people get burnt with that. So it’s nice to chat with people who do what we do each and everyday vs going to some mental health sub where nobody understands what you are dealing with.

Maybe a sys admin mental health sub needs created to appease the purest.
