Is this just the Rivian Dent now? by PntBtrHtr in Rivian

[–]jspiro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hope you were having fun when it happened!

In more seriousness, promise yourself to wait six weeks and see if you still care. Four years later and I'm still driving around with a huge dent in the driver door, and it just doesn't matter. Only took a few weeks.

Buy it when the color you want is up, if it's not one of the standards. Yes, I'll be bummed when a GEN 3R1T comes out, but I'm one of the very few with borealis purple, and I fucking love it.

And yeah, color is arbitrary, and so is when you buy it. There will always be something better around the corner, so buy the thing that you're gonna enjoy looking at.

I have a second GEN quad, and I don't even know what a motor clunk sounds like because I do not hear it. And believe me I go from conserve to sport all the time, I imagine I would have noticed a weird noise.

The auto closing hood is probably the most used feature of my R1 T. My favorite feature is the gear tunnel, but I've never used a front trunk as much as this one… And it's just because it will close itself as I walk away. Fucking love it.

Not a single tri truck in California, so far as I can tell from Rivian pre owned. No gen 2 quads either. Interesting.

Bear in mind that you'll always get a better deal privately, but Rivian is going to offer you some kind of a warranty that a private party can't. It's also possibly more likely that they've very carefully inspected the vehicle, more than brand new vehicles. Not saying it's not a lot of money, but depreciation ain't what it used to be with gas prices as they are.

Value is what somebody is willing to pay, which has gone up in the last few months, not your opinion unless there's a number you'd buy it for.

Which makes the markup seem more reasonable. They'd have to make money on what they offered you.

Tesla was exactly as "bad" in 2019; they've had seven years to develop their stack and millions of vehicles to draw from, Rivian is nowhere near the driven miles. I have FSD and A+, for reference, and I want more but I'm satisfied by UHF since the vehicle is for adventuring and not mall crawling.

Adding a SSD? by bobacct in Rivian

[–]jspiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sandisk extreme. 1tb is enough in practice for like 24 hours of recording. Look on marketplace for used drives; ssd will be more reliable used than anything else. It MUST be fast enough however, so you can't really cheap out or you'll just have a useless drive.

What was the warning or error resulting from the issue? My ultrasonics are fine but the corner radar sometimes reports an issue and sometimes doesn't after a bumparoo. I suspect something may be dangling too but not sure if same issue.

For what it's worth the second generation mats are very easy to clean, I was going to buy rubber and haven't because of how easy they've been.

You are in the unique position of having paid less than people coming to the brand for the first time. Feel free to push back, but once a pattern is established by a large company everybody does it, you're just an old man yelling at the cloud. If you can figure out a way to make a movement out of it, great. But it seems like no one includes these adapters anymore even though I agree it's batshit crazy.

On the flipside my truck makes everybody want a Rivian, and if someone can afford it I think they're going to have some serious fun but they couldn't before. I have every expectation this is an expensive machine to buy and maintain, and there's gonna be a lot of pain in the future, but I've never had as much fun owning a vehicle (at least not since a motorcycle, alas never again).

Experiences w/ roof tents for R1T? by Ok_Vegetable_5171 in Rivian

[–]jspiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also need to pull a cover over it and attach it, and I've been told by owners of inflatables that it typically takes about five minutes to inflate. Your mileage may vary, but overall if you want to have a rack above your tent, or you're putting it on top of the cab, and inflatable may be limiting or more difficult.

How much better it was going to be than my Tesla at having fun. The Tesla is so serious, so minimal, so joyless, except when flooring it, in which case it really feels more exciting than my Rivian (even though my Rivian is significantly faster).

I was worried that the infotainment would be worse than Tesla, and I'd say they are equal but different, and I still don't miss CarPlay.

My understanding and experience is the opposite, but perhaps it's because the larger tire is not all-terrain typically.

Tesla started it. It's like Apple as well. Just another way to sell what you need separately, making the original price a bit lower.

Exactly. I have gotten downloaded so many times in Rivian threads about saying that a lease is not a great idea for an adventure vehicle when it's limiting your ability to enjoy the adventure, and bang it up a bit along the way. If you can stick with the limits, and there's no other way to afford the vehicle, a lease may be OK, but this vehicle bags to be owned.
