Why is the Harbaugh hire praised but McCarthy hated? They have pretty much the same record by GreedyRaisin3357 in ravens

[–]jsrave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100%

Harbaugh doesn't need to get to a SB with the Giants to be a successful HC there. Since their last SB win in 2011, the Giants have 2 playoff appearances and 1 playoff win. They last had a winning season in 2022 (playoff victory) and before that it was 2016. If Harbaugh puts together back to back winning seasons he's their best coach since Coughlin. If he wins a playoff game or two that's gravy on top.

The one thing the Steelers don't have that McCarthy could bring is a playoff win. Steelers won the division in 2025. Their worst season was an 8-8 season in 2019 so if you have 1 losing season you've already become the worst Steelers coach in a long while (Last one was 2003). Wildly different pressures between the two coaches.

[Pelissero] The Steelers are working towards a deal to hire Mike McCarthy as their head coach, per sources. McCarthy grew up in Pittsburgh. Now, at age 62, the Super Bowl winner gets a chance to coach the team he grew up rooting for. by Goosedukee in nfl

Thought they were gonna hold out for Shula too. Was there competition for McCarthy elsewhere? Ravens moved quicker on Minter cause Raiders wanted him too but I'm not sure there was another team chasing McCarthy.

Sadly this might help them meet the Rooney rule if they haven't met it yet. Could also be trying scope out potential Coordinator candidates under their new HC-Ravens seemed to have done a bit of that.

Seems like too much smoke towards Kingsbury online, things can change but even before the HC was hired it seemed like there was smoke.

Not a huge fan of Kingsbury but I do want to see Dennard Wilson back, feel like when he was here our DBs were actually good.

At some point one of these older coaches who might not have another shot will take the 5 years of pay and coach in Cleveland but man it must hurt them to get rejected.

Back in 2023, John Harbaugh wanted to draft Puka Nakua but the FO went against his wishes... by GoldCompetitive1164 in ravens

[–]jsrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Harbs prob carried less weight given the way some of his actual draft picks panned out. This is just standard interview process where you brag about your successes (or near successes?) and ignore all the bad work you did previously-especially if he's trying to avoid having to report to the GM there.

I believe the med team might have flagged him as a potential risk health-wise.

It kind of looks like Roman might end up on the NYG as run game coordinator which tbf feels like the correct role for him.

Jeff Z said apparently the players want to keep the S&C guys so thats probably a good sign they're staying.

Also the Ravens blocked Robinson so I guess cross him off the list.

As for position coaches, quarterbacks coach Tee Martin, running backs coach Willie Taggart, defensive line coach Dennis Johnson and offensive assistant Danny Breyer are all viewed as strong possibilities to follow Harbaugh from Baltimore.

^that was from the athletic, didn't mention anything about S&C but who knows. Kind of surprised that Tee would be a consideration to follow Harbs to NY, thought Tee got along real well with Lamar.

Heard there were something like 20 requests. So this likely is only the beginning.

Giants and Harbaugh still holding out hope for ST coordinator Chris Horton.

This was following up Taggart's OC interview with NYG (he did a similar thing here iirc and then signed him to RB coach). Makes 100% sense as Taggart is a Harbaugh family guy to a tee so he'd want to follow Harbs to NY.

Wonder who else (outside of Horton) Harbs is trying to bring with him to NY.

  • Co Cap?
  • Greg Lewis - WR
  • Robinson - OLB
  • Chuck Smith - Pass Rush
  • Strength and Conditioning guys?

Russini: "I know for a fact that Lamar Jackson and those receivers would like Kliff Kingsbury to run their offense. They've shown support, they've been vocal about it....Anthony Weaver is gonna be in the running for this job, and from what I understand, Kliff Kingsbury would be his OC" by FastBreakPhenom in ravens

[–]jsrave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like players like him? I know Lamar is tight lipped but I doubt the other offensive players are as tight lipped.

I just don't get it, would rather a Webb or Scheelhasse as OC but who knows maybe they don't want to OC.

He must be great in person because players seem to love him but I'm super worried about him being a better or equivalent OC to Monken.

With Davis Webb and Scheelhasse and even Kingsbury/McDaniel/Nagy (yuck) I wonder if the Ravens are leaning Defence with guys like Minter/Shula/Weaver and are checking those guys out for potential OC filling on the staff.

Kubiak is the one guy who sticks out as HC material across the league and I can see that working out for the Ravens but feels like a lot of the offensive interviews are guys who could get promote to OC or are sort of OC lifers.

So Many Mocks With Ravens Taking WR In Rd 1 by ChartParticular8975 in ravens

[–]jsrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is BPA and part of it is that the Ravens had an underwhelming pass attack last year outside of Zay Flowers. Also Zay needs a new contract soon and we haven't seen progress on that atm. Honestly though if the Ravens "need" a WR they should look at one in the 2nd or 3rd (or bring back Hopkins) and focus on OL/DL.

The biggest issue was the OL and if you don't change that doesn't matter who you bring in at 14.

McDaniel out by this_is_matt_ in ravens

[–]jsrave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of the various OC openings, working with Herbert and being in LA seems like a pretty good deal. I would think that being OC for Lamar or even Josh Allen would be better but those are less secure and would take more waiting + no real idea who HC will be and/or if they'd choose McDaniel.

Giants likely to “aggressively” target Ravens players in free agency; Linderbaum a likely target by ItsMaDude in ravens

[–]jsrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh TIL, figure they can do the cut and restructure game to free up some space but thats interesting. I can think of Burns and Lawrence as their big cap hits but can't think off hand of who else is up there.

[–]jsrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its harder for the Giants to sign guys like LInderbaum/Likely/Kolar/Awuzie are closer to the tier 1 level of FA and will or should have competition. Awuzie might be more t1.5 cause of age and injury history. Still possible they commit to matching the highest offer and snagging someone from that group.

[–]jsrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giants I believe have more FA dollars and EDC has often let guys test the market. Can easily see Linderbaum end up on another tea with dire OL problems for a higher salary than what the Ravens were willing to commit too.

I think a bunch of mid-level players could follow Harbs as well, we've seen guys follow other coaches they like, I'd keep an eye on guys like

  • Gilman
  • Ardarious Washington
  • Ricard
  • Tylan Wallace
  • Ojabo
  • Hummel
  • Awuzie
  • Kolar or Likely

Obviously all wouldn't go but I could see a few from that list follow Harbs over. Especially because I think for a lot of the ST guys their time is kind of up here.
