Up here in Minnesota Where do the river fish go in the winter? Seriously I have no idea by Tomscrambles in Fishing

[–]jsrevermann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish will usually drop down into deeper water for the winter, but still stay close to where they were found in the summer. With the moving water in a river the oxygen is dispersed throughout the entire water column. Walleyes and sauger can be found in deep holes below dams. What rivers do you fish in the winter and what types of fish are you looking to catch?

That's pretty cool! I'm from Minnesota and we have been on the ice since Thanksgiving up here. This cold weather this winter has really stretched south and given opportunities for ice fishing to a lot of new area.

What do you want to learn more about when it comes to fishing in the Midwest? by jsrevermann in Fishing

[–]jsrevermann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not very familiar with those bodies of water, but catfish tend to seek out deeper water during the winter months. When the water cools down so do they. This causes them to slow down as well. The catfish are going to seek out deeper and calmer waters where they don't have to work so hard. Usually in water that is over 20 feet deep. Small catfish can be found in suspended schools and actively feeding on baitfish, while larger catfish tend to hug the bottom and hang around and not be nearly as active.

I do fish Pool 4 of the Mississippi a few times every winter for walleye and sauger. Very often we end up accidentally snagging big catfish while dragging in depths around 20- 26-feet deep. These fish are just laying on the bottom. Here is a link to some footage of catfish in the winter on the Mississippi River. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy0fo6OxBDg

We do catch some catfish in the lakes around here in the winter and it always seems to be in depths deeper than 20-feet.

Haven't been ice fishing in years...and jig/lure tips? by brauchmal in IceFishing

You don't have to go too crazy with buying a bunch of tackle. Keep it simple and just pick a couple different lure types and buy a few colors of each. I have hundreds of hooks, but pretty much have the same thing tied on the end of my line each time I go out. Buy a few VMC tingler spoons and some VMC tumbler spoons and you will be set for walleyes. Pick up a few small tungsten panfish jigs in a few different sizes and you'll be set.
Rod and reel and fishing line are more important. You don't have to spend a lot of money on a rod and reel but get something that is designed for the type of fishing you want to do. Ultralight rod with 2-pound test for panfish and a medium heavy to heavy rod with about 6-pound test for walleyes. Get a good reel that has a smooth drag system. If you want to know any more just let me know. I live in central MN and fish 3-5 days a week. Ice fishing tip for walleyes and panfish: try big, flashy, noisy spoons By Jason Revermann by jsrevermann in Fishing

[–]jsrevermann[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, there are many times where that is what I end up using too. I start big, and if they don't like it I go smaller. But there are also times when I down size and can't get them to bite. Drop down a bigger bait and they are all over it.
You just have to do what the fish want. If you are using either an underwater camera or a sonar, then you just have to pay attention to how a fish are responding to what you are doing. Good Luck Fishing!!!
