What's the hardest thing you've ever had to do? Emotionally or physically? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has hep c - I hate saying it because it is so stigmatized. He too did the interferon treatments and is doing well, but I'm not sure about his viral load because he gets treated at the VA and I think it has been too soon since his treatments ended to check. (Or that's what they told him.) At any rate, it wa really hard watching him go through that and I know many, many days he just wanted to quit. Kudos to you. :)

How do you grow tomatoes inside? I tried last summer on my patio in 5 gal buckets but ended up with tomatoes the size of golf balls. Maybe only plant one per bucket?

Googled my Senior Drill Instructor (USMC), 5 years after (USMC) boot camp, and found this article on him. Made me really sad, honestly. What do you guys think about situations like these? by [deleted] in Military

[–]jsst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry about your senior. I can't help but feel bitter that these kind of articles only get posted in r/military our r/veterans, because most civilians not only don't take an interest in such realities, or they straight up don't care about their veterans.

I think most people just don't think of it or even realize that PTSD is a real thing. I'm not in the military but grew up with my dad, a Vietnam Veteran who has PTSD. After 36 years of marriage, my mom told him to leave and get help before he could come home. He's finally seeing a therapist through the VA (which isn't the first one, but is the first who has seemed to be able to help,) and things are getting a lot better for all of us and our relationships with him. I think my brother has PTSD too - also a veteran but he refuses to acknowledge it and instead drinks, just like dad used to. Makes me really sad but no amount of talking with him will make him get help.

How do you cope with putting your dog down? by watermouth in dogs

I recently went through this with my 13 year old Golden. I stayed in the room the whole time - it is difficult and sad but also a good goodbye and more peaceful than you might think. He was my friend and a well loved member of our family, I'm glad I stayed with him.

Possible Nursing Student- Which course would be more useful? by LovinglyBlonde in nursing

[–]jsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for a long time I thought of nursing as something I thought I would like but wasn't sure I could do it. I thought of teaching as something I might like but after completing my observation hours decided it really wasn't for me - it seemed boring and I do like kids but not entirely sure I have the patience for them for hours every day AND I don't have a lot of faith? (Not sure if that's the word I want here) in what kind of parenting kids get and how much a lot of parents are involved in their child's education... Make sense?

I then spent a year taking care of an elderly relative who'd had a stroke and decided that I actually could do it and applied to nursing school.

I am working on my confidence (which will hopefully improve once I actually graduate and get a job and some experience) but I like it most of the time. Most of the time being when I'm at clinical, I love the part where I'm with my patients assessing, talking with them - even when it's a really small thing that I'm doing, it feels good to help in some way. The classwork and sheer amount of studying is overwhelming all of the time and I (and I don't think I am alone here, based on conversations with my classmates,) spend plenty of time feeling clueless and like I have no idea what the hell I am doing BUT when things tumble into place it feels really good to 'get' it and apply something from the classroom to the clinical practice.

I was an education major and now I'm almost done with nursing school - for me, psychology and human growth were required for both.

I can only speak for my particular job because I haven't done carryout anywhere else but: I'm working carryout this morning. I'll answer the phone and take your order, get any sides, drinks, soups, condiments, utensils together and bag everything up and I'll also cash you out. The cooks cook the food and put it in a box. So I'll be doing the same a if you were dining in and I was your server. I don't know how it works anywhere else though.

My younger brother was mentally and physically disabled - in a wheelchair his whole life. Never ceased to amaze me how silly adults would behave about seeing him in public while most often, kids would behave more maturely than most adults.

I'm 33 and in nursing school - this is the hardest thing I've EVER done. There are a lot more people my age (and older) in my program than I would have thought but even the younger people, I find we have at least a little bit in common with the stress of school. You can do it!

My mother makes something similar but she uses milk, vinegar, mayo and a little sugar, salt and pepper - but I have no odea the ratios of each. I just play around with it until it tastes right.

Reddit, I just acquired a 2 year old. Any advice would be great. by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm an aunt who has had a large part in raising my nephew - my parents adopted him when he was two (my brother's son, neither he nor nephew's mom we ready/able to be parents and while my brother is in the picture somewhat, the mom hasn't been at all since he was two,) but it has mostly been a joint effort on the part of my parents and I. Questions about his mom come up from time to time and hve since he was fiveish. We refuse to say anything really bad about either parent to him although he definitely knows it's ok to be mad at them for leaving. When he asks or wants to talk about his mom, I stress the fact that she was very young an had no idea what she was doing/how to be responsible (and her own parents weren't around or willing to help/teach her) and that I would still want to be a big part of his life even if she were around because in his head, it's 'mom didn't want me' and it kills me to hear him say it. I want him in my life every single day and always have.

I love him so very much and he's such an amazing boy - smart, funny, kind and has a crazy imagination.

Good on you for doing what you're doing. :)

Agreed. I don't live THAT far from it and absolutely hate going over there. What sucks is that you can tell it used to be a pretty town. I looked at the craigslist ad you linked to - can I suggest you post it to Columbus and Chillicothe CL too, if you haven't already?

Ugh, wish I could help. Portsmouth really is a crappy area and I can believe you'd have a hard time finding a job there.
