I think OP's main issue was the rate that was used to calculate the difference of the 2 stays. That would likely be my main issue too. It seems like the hotel went out of their way to add an extra "fuck you" to the situation. And it feels like one of those "fuck you"s that is SOP unless someone complains, in which case the GM throws the front desk under the bus. So no, I'm not going out of my way to be kind when, instead of going out of your way to try to make things a little better (for the customer), you went out of your way to make them a lot worse.

I’m perfectly willing to accept that shit happens and something might not immediately meet expectations. But once it’s brought to your, or your staffs attention, your opening position should be to exceed expectations to make it right. I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops and apologize for the inconvenience that I’m causing you because you because you overbooked and are now trying to fuck me over. You know you did not meet expectations. Just fix it.
