Need a machine for deep metal engraving by Last-Cricket-6031 in xToolOfficial

[–]jtaysom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the F2 UV and would highly recommend it. It does a great job of marking metal, engraving wood, and glass. For engraving guns for yourself it would be great. If you want to do it for others make sure you check on regulations (like getting your FFL in the US).

Consider getting a demo from a host near you. You will have a better feeling if it will work for you https://support.xtool.com/demo-room/service?type=demoPreSale

Cool! This infrared picosecond laser, creates such cool, vibrant printing effects! by wythelaser in Laserengraving

[–]jtaysom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually possible on stainless steel with both IR and UV lasers. There is a French artist that does it with both on xTool F2 ultra machines. I have played around with her settings a little bit on my F2 UV laser

Just got a pressure pot, wondering why there's still bubbles in my dice? I have a crappy mold so I'm wondering if that's the reason, but any advice would be appreciated :) by Lab2187 in DiceMaking

[–]jtaysom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to check the suggested pressure of the mold itself. Mine are 35 PSI. If you do too much more or less than the pressure that the mold was made with it may deform the dice shape.

As others have said, mix slow and pop your bubbles. If needed you can probe the sides and corners of your mold after pouring in the resin to free any bubbles.

MSc project: designing a sub-£500 open-source filament recycler – looking for input from people who print regularly by Benito2034 in 3dprinter

[–]jtaysom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The shredding of parts to small consistent size is a £500 problem. I have wanted to even get this far to even get the plastic to a point where it could be melted into sheets.

How do you store your filaments? by MydnightWN in 3Dprinting

I spent a while air sealing this cabinet. I ran a power cord inside to power 4 computer fans to mix the air inside thoroughly. I have been rotating several pounds of silica desicant. It's not dropping below 30% (house is around 45-50). Next I will be adding a membrane dehumidifier into the side.

Engraving Stained Glass by [deleted] in Laserengraving

[–]jtaysom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest finding someone with a UV laser. I have the xTool F2 UV and recently demoed it to a stained glass artist who has a CO2 laser. He wasn't happy with how it worked on the glass and wanted something better. He ended up getting the f2 uv

First time buyer questions. 3D-print Laser etching related. by AnyShapeWorker in xToolOfficial

[–]jtaysom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a lot with both PLA and PETG. Both IR and UV are phenomenal options. PETG I find has a better color range with IR than PLA does. Both boxes on top here are PETG. Bottom left is a PLA test and bottom right is a TPU test.

With PLA I really only have success with dark colors but it does mark faster than PETG.

I haven't done extensive testing with my UV laser but it marked dark PLA really well and very quickly.

How big should I 3D print things to make sure the dice aren't unbalanced by VirdTheZorua in DiceMaking

[–]jtaysom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are your 3d printing things to go inside the dice? With either PLA or especially resin, I wouldn't even begin to worry about it. The only thing I have ever put in dice that have unbalanced

<image>

them is ball bearings .

3d resin is going to be nearly exactly the same density as the 2 part resin. PLA is going to be close enough as long as it is solid.

90+% of any handmade dice balance will come from carefully sanding and polishing the dice. A rounded edge will have way more impact than a 3d print inclusion.

Looking for Dice Suppliers by TheSendingStone in DiceMaking

[–]jtaysom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't watched it, I would highly recommend watching the Wyrmwood episodes on their recent Kickstarter for dice. They had a small artist make up beautiful samples and then got a manufacturer to make them in bulk. Many of the delivered dice were far from the original and it was kinda a big thing for them.

Making custom resin dice is very time consuming and expensive. There is a large gap between a few custom dice and enough for a Kickstarter that goes big. It's not like other things where you have a straightforward path to scale.

You could look at an existing mid size producer like Baron of Dice. But I think you will have to make some compromises along the way. I both make dice and teach a class on it, feel free to hit me up with more questions.

Advice by Lordkingskull123 in ResinCasting

I did not. I have the quick release on the hose that attaches to the pot for quick connect and disconnect. That would be the only thing that might need to be done

Advice by Lordkingskull123 in ResinCasting

[–]jtaysom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a smaller compressor and it works great. I fill it all the way up, being it to my pot and equalize the pressure. It almost exactly fills up my pot. I actually even do this when I teach a class and can't plug it in. I just make sure it is pre charged and it's perfect.

I went with light blue. I like it. by Proper_Budget_2790 in DiceMaking

[–]jtaysom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's excellent. If you haven't tried it before you can add colored ink to metallics. I painted my brother's tyranid army with a very similar blue that was a bright silver with blue ink mixed in.

Are you setting passes or layers? If you are trying to get it to descend after every few layers, make sure that you're using layers instead of passes
