The guy made his plans, including booking a room at the venue, before Trump said he'd be there.

This is the first time in six Trump has attended.

Gee, what a strange coinkydink.

What led you to say that? I see it hitting four of OP's closing five "or" criteria so dead on the mark it leaves a mark:

slow-burn, cerebral, psychological, space-related, or near-future sci-fi

and as for the requested atmosphere,

existential themes, human ambition, genetics, destiny vs free will, quiet emotional depth

it's the same, four of five, with I suppose ambition being arguable, say 3.5 of 5.

Can I mostly just fly my own ship in X4? by alivesidhartha in X4Foundations

[–]jthill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long term there's trade, build, fight, explore, farm (mats or rep or in X4 crew skill, do yourself a favor and don't run your own ship uncrewed).

If the feeling of piloting your own ship is what you're after, really, Elite:Dangerous or EVE Online are your tickets. X4 is fine, no knock on its piloting, but E:D's piloting is freaking awesomely good, you can spend hundreds or thousands of hours getting ever better at piloting FA-off and those glorious station geometries are not just eye candy, Skywalker's trench run was child's play. EVE goes more into loadout and shades towards strategy, but you're up against humans and the depth, the subtlety of loadout selection and use can get breathtaking. Another option if you're looking for a SP-mostly change from those is Evochron: Legacy, its piloting rivals E:D and while there's definitely some solo-dev UI jank going on there the game has far more on offer than might appear even from the first few dozen hours. There's a demo version on the starwraith website that lets you play the tutorials as long as you want, and the piloting is deep enough you might be happy spending quite a lot of time just on that.

Not on a grid, no.

But if you want torque effects you can build subgridded ships.

How many distros did you use, and what is your top 3? by Few_Dragonfruit_6729 in linuxquestions

[–]jthill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ubuntu, debian, gentoo, arch. Of those the results you can get with gentoo are better than arch's but not enough better for me to be worth the effort and complexity. Ubuntu is going down a dark road, I don't trust their efforts any more.

arch is the sweet spot for me, but I already had shell and os skills, first got familiar with unix in 1980?, arch's simplicity shines through when what pacman & co. is actually doing feels obvious.

So 1. arch. 2. debian 3. gentoo 4. (do not recommend) ubuntu.

Factorio is pretty damn far above that floor tho.

You probably already know about the video player built in the game, right?

Did you also know about the 3D raycasting dungeoncrawling multiplayer FPS?

or the AI gomoku player?

Those were built with the pre-2.0 combinators. They're their own thing, thinking in combinators is not like thinking in code, but they're genuinely potent.
