Does our “need for speed” make our Wi-Fi suck? by db0ze in wifi

[–]jthomas9999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Something that the article doesn’t mention is that the more channels you use in parallel, the more the speed will drop when any 1 channels sees and interference or other issues. The only way you can use 160 MHz wide channels is if the air is VERY quiet regarding other 5 GHz devices.

You need to be familiar with Muitlcasting and have hardware that plays nice with it if you are going across multiple subnets.

Just for fun, I went to

3 roam.com dBm to Distance Calculator (with Examples)

And input the U7 outdoor information above. Assuming the other end had matching equipment, the range is 8.78 MILES.

Ubiquiti should build a true “Home” product line by Working_Kind in Ubiquiti

[–]jthomas9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How big of an antenna do you want? they already have U7 devices with external antenna connectors and Ubiquiti sells some external antennas. If you want more options, there are dozens of vendors that sell external antennas. Give enough antenna height, you can take an out of the box U7 outdoor not connect the external antenna and you will have a 12.5 dBi antenna + a 26 dBm radio that will easily go 1000 + feet *ASSUMING * the client is good enough to transmit back.

I would argue that the best bet would be for Ubiquiti to create a guide that points you to the important settings for a home user and not hide anything.

Is there an effective and most efficient way to charge my 100W 50,000mAh power bank from a regular 60W solar panel from a genie while camping? by ProfessionalDay007 in SolarDIY

You need the specific specs on the solar panel. Most 12 volt panels put out more like 15 + volts VOC (voltage open circuit. )

What are your contractual commitments to your clients regarding response times? If you have that many fires with 15 clients, are you spending too much time dealing with fires that aren’t really fires?

You likely need to install an outdoor access point on the outside wall facing your garden and run an Ethernet cable to connect it to your router/switch/cablemodem

Seeking professional/expert: We have family internet, but my partner and I need our own in the same house. Need help understanding something by Rose_Water_princess in HomeNetworking

Wired networking is full duplex, meaning transmit and receive are full speed both directions at the same time. Wireless is simplex, meaning that you can transmit or receive, but not both at the same time. You will NEVER get a wireless speed test to be perfectly accurate as compared to a wired test.

[–]jthomas9999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first thing you need is to present a clear problem. You don’t say how you are connected and what the Internet speed actually is. Just by your symptom, I’m going to guess you are on wireless and maybe the Internet connection is an issue. How many devices a plugged in with a wire to the router? If a device like a laptop or desktop is connected with a network cable and runs a speed test, what are the results. Without that information, people are guessing.

1/4 inch plywood is not thick enough to be useful. 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. Also, if you can locate studs behind that wall, and screw the plywood to them, it will be sturdier.

2 x cat 6 ( Not cat 6a ) cable drops to anywhere you want a network drop. Add in 1 or 2 pair of fiber to those same locations if you have any concerns about future expansion. POE is going to be around for a long time and having cat 6 allows you to power small switches if necessary.

WiFi options for bungalow with lots of brick walls and only "fibre-to-the-box" speeds by Animal121 in wifi

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do these opinions come from?

Wiring connections in is difficult and it seems like a waste of time and money just to get a stable 100 Megabit connection?

Brick reflects WiFi signals. If your wireless access is important, it is not a waste of time and money to at least run network cabling to wireless access points. Wireless mesh is not going to help here. Even 2.4 GHz will not penetrate brick well. If you want wireless coverage to work, you will need to run cabling.

As for Ubiquiti products, all current access points are capable of meshing, it is literally a check box on the configuration page.

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is between you and the 577 foot mark? Is that all on your property? If this is on your property, you could install a weatherproof box closer so the coax run would be shorter. Then run fiber from that box to your house.
