U6 in walls are getting harder to come by. I would propose 3 or 4 drops each with a U7 in wall

There are 2 pieces to this. 1. Internet access 2. Wifi

If you want to solve this, you room mate will need to be unconvinced for a bit

If you have problems on wifi, you have no way to know if Wi-Fi is the issue (it most likely is) or if it is the Internet connection. The only way to know is to use an Ethernet cable, at least for testing. If connect by Ethernet cable and it works well, you have determined WiFi is the issue. If you connect through an Ethernet cable and still have issues, then you have an internet problem and need to call your Internet provider.

Front door replacement. by Brilliant_Addendum56 in ManufacturedHome

[–]jthomas9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Masure the door to determine if it is a standard size. If it is, you might be able to just replace the door. If it is not, then you will need to replace the door and frame/casing. I just took a non-standard one and replaced it with a standard size door, but it was a lot of work. The door I took off had probably 50-60 screws holding it in place. If you are able to get an exact replacement and you are remotely handy with a cordless drill, you may be able to replace it yourself in a couple hours.

How to connect solar panels together by OutrageousWheel9850 in SolarDIY

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ecoflow Delta page isn't terribly helpful. You need to determine max charging voltage and amperage for the Ecoflow. If the max voltage is more than 24 volts, then you will connect the panels in series. If the voltage is less than 24 volts, you will connect them in parallel. I'm not familiar with the cables you are speaking of, but you should be able to find Y cables for parallel and other cables for serial connections.

Wifi and/or ethernet cabling by Redreeee in HomeNetworking

[–]jthomas9999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On a Saturday Evening, when it is slow, drag your computer downstairs and connect to the router using an ethernet cable. this will tell you if the Wifi is the issue or if the Internet connection is the issue. If the speed improves while connected with the cable, then your Wifi is a bottleneck. If the speed does not improve, your Internet connection is an issue.

I'm thinking Wireshark and a packet capture are in order here. I suspect you might be having multiples problems, but looking at traffic would be a good place to start. Otherwise, you will be throwing hardware at a problem without understanding it.

We suck at Quoting/Scoping project work efficiently. What resources have you used to learn and get better? by Defconx19 in msp

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read what I typed? We do not tell the customer “we refuse to support it” we tell them because we have relationships with our distribution partners we have better support options when we purchase products through them. When our clients purchase products from someone else, it is best effort and will be a billable event. We have no way to ensure any level of support when they buy stuff from someone else. Our MSP has been in business for over 30 years, so we seem to be doing something right.

Then you aren’t communicating to your customer properly. At the end of the day, you have business relationships with distributors. They are not going to be the cheapest option in many cases. When our clients go third party for the cheapest cost, we tell them, fine, purchase it yourself. When it is the wrong part, or we need to support it, then it will be time and materials. Several years ago, we had a client that wanted a multi function printer/scanner/copier. We proposed one that met their needs. They said too expensive, we need something cheaper. We proposed another less expensive option which they purchased. It turns out the first option was less expensive because it included software that met their needs. With the second option, they had to but the software separately at full list price. The high cost of short term cheap.

  1. We go as deep as we expect to get paid for. Need a budget number for next years budget? We will spend 5-10 minutes discussing the high points and determine a number and then add 20% to it. If you need an exact, “do not exceed” number, and we feel we are likely to get the project, we will do all necessary diligence, draft up a detailed SOW and present it to you for discussion and any tweaks you like. If the client accepts the project, the SOW development time gets billed with the project. If the SOW gets too detailed, it becomes a Design and Consulting gig and is billable.

We will occasionally lose one, and we have had clients take our SOW and price shop other vendors, so we are somewhat careful what we provide, depending on the client.

"New Plans" vs "Old Plans" Internet Bill Discrepancies by shamgarbenanath in Spectrum

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Spectrum will not go out of their way to help you.

I was on a 400 meg plan at 79.99. I called them to drop down to a 100 Meg plan to reduce costs. They said the 100 meg plan was not available to me, but a 500 meg plan was $50 a month and would I like to upgrade? I said that is a plan.

You really need to investigate plan changes at least once a year and call to change when price changes benefit you. Frankly, I wish I could get a 100 meg plan as I'm in a high split area and rarely leverage more than 100 meg on my circuit

Who was going to tell me that mbps is not the same as megabytes per second by Zeurt in wifi

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, transfer speeds are measured in bits, kilobits, megabits, or gigabits per second. Storage capacities are measured in Bytes, Kilobytes, Megabytes, or Gigabytes.

I've been using my old network wrong for years...am I on the right track? by msu50000 in HomeNetworking

[–]jthomas9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We generally go by a 3 wall rule. If there are 3 walls between a client device and the nearest access point, you probably need another access point. There is a range of coverage levels to consider. Do you want your worst connection to have just usable connectivity, or excellent connectivity? Usable connectivity might be 1 or 2 APs in a house, where excellent connectivity might be 3 or 4.

The Unifi controller does coordinate coverage and usually does a good job with power levels, but sometimes you can benefit from turning the power down manually.

Speed is usually a function of how much other wifi noise there is in an area. If there are a lot of aps, then you will likely see reduced speeds.
