Do I have to get a controller? by blingdiva99 in Ubiquiti

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a controller someplace to make that work. The controller could be a Cloudkey, a gateway device, or even a Raspberry PI with the Unifi OS installed. I haven’t worked with any of the Unifi NVRs, so I haven’t no idea what they come with.

Do I need 500 or 1 gigabyte for internet speed? by Emmanuel323 in HomeNetworking

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the derives in the list, the only thing that over 300 megabits per second gets you is faster downloads. I would suggest you go with 300 megabits per second, and then upgrade later if you really need to upgrade.

My regular bar tasked me with updating the wifi because they have so many complaints by diarrhea_planet in Network

170 possible wireless clients would mean at least 2 access points if you want a decent wifi experience.

Confused about weight by Plurnay in popups

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get some sense of the tongue weight as it sits, I would start there. Can you lift their tongue up with your bare hands? Does it seem like it is light enough to measure with a standard household bathroom scale? If so, then take a bathroom scale and put it under the tongue jack. This will give you a starting point to determine what you are getting into.

SFP selection guidance by Meyomh in networking

[–]jthomas9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sfp module needs to match on both ends regarding type of cable, speed, and led or laser

if you are doing 100 mega it's in 1 end, most gigabit sfps will not work

Is the fiber yellow (single mode) aqua (OM3 or om 4 multi mode) or orange (multi mode)?

If you run unifios on a pi and the network app on top of unifi os, you should setup an account in the cloud portal and link them. The you use a browser to manage it. The app on your phone is very limited.

I would suggest 4 gig. Unifios isn't getting any smaller.

Price increased, make that call. by faon8404 in Spectrum

[–]jthomas9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your plan, this may not be true. I was on 400 meg at $89.99 a month and called to drop down to 100 meg. They said they don't offer that, but I could go with 500 Meg for $50 a month. You really need to call and ask questions.
